Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Guilty Man: Le Coupable Were the heart the organ of speech we should have an universal language. Even as it' is, its beats mark the rhythm Of all emotional literature. An author who plays upon the heart-strings, purging the human passions, love and pity and terror, by arousing them and satisfying or allaying them, strengthening the moral fibre by giving it exercise, uplifting the imagination to a broad vision of hu manity, and directing the will toward action in behalf of the oppressed, will not fail Of devotees in other nations than his own. SO it was with Charles Dickens, whose books have been translated into every civilized language, and who has been an inspiration to foreign authors no less than to those of the anglo-saxon world. In France, in particular, Dickens has found disciples among literary ar tists of equal rank with himself, Alphonse Daudet and Francois Coppee showing in certain of their best works the direct influence of the novelist whom Taine charac terized as, the great English painter and poet of humanity. Book excerpt: Dag Petersson offers a comprehensive critique of the philosophy that has dominated 200 years of modern thought, politics, economy, and culture. The basic question is this: why does dialectical metaphysics fail to keep what it promises? What is it about dialectics, that makes it fall into irreducibly distinct variations of itself, when all it promises is to synthesize, to reconcile and make whole what is fragmented and alien to itself? An undisciplined creativity intrinsic to completing reason comes to light through analyses of how dialectical systems begin. Every dialectical philosophy must account for its own birth, and it is at this point, when it also articulates its promise of universal synthesis, that the book discovers a desire for light-writing, or photography. Only the most immediate element light can mediate the necessary self-determination of thought at its origin. Light must begin to write. A philosophical critique of dialectics is therefore also a point of departure for a new aesthetic ontology of photography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through close examination of references to gender identity, female sexuality and corporeality, this book is the first of its kind to shed light on the complexities of translating the recent transgressive turn in contemporary women’s writing in French. Via four case studies, namely, the translations into English of Nelly Arcan’s Putain (2001), Catherine Millet’s La Vie sexuelle de Catherine M. (2001), Nancy Huston’s Infrarouge (2010) and Nina Bouraoui’s Garçon manqué (2000), this book explores how transgressive topoi such as prostitution, anorexia, matrophobia, rape, female desire, and transgenderism are translated. The book considers how (auto)fictional female selves portrayed are dis/placed by translation at both a textual and paratextual level. Combining feminist phenomenological perspectives on female lived experience with feminist translation theory, this interdisciplinary study offers an insight into how the experiential is brought into language, how it journeys via language into new cultural contexts via translation and creates a dialogical space in which the subjectivities of those involved (author, narrator, protagonist, translator) become open to the porosity of encounters with alterity. The volume will appeal to scholars in translation studies, French Studies, and gender and sexuality studies, particularly those interested in feminist translation and literary translation.
