Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: V. 2. "Designed to be useful, this book is simple in plan. It is a list of the best available recordings of vocal music on long-playing records. Presented alphabetically by composers, it lists compositions either in alphabetical order or in alphabetical groups (there is an additional section listening miscellaneous recordings under their titles or by the names of the performer or performers). Each recording is discussed briefly. No attempt has been made to list all the recordings of a given composition--such uncritical lists being available elsewhere. Recordings that Mr. Miller considers inferior to the best are mentioned only when he has felt it necessary to warn buyers against them. There is an index of performers and of opera titles. Here is a thoughtfully selected list of the finest recordings of opera, oratorio, cantata, and song--and of all other primarily vocal music. A similar treatment of Orchestral Music will be found in the companion volume by Irving Kolodin; of Chamber and Solo Instrument Music in the companion volume by Harold C. Schonberg."--Dust jacket.
