Book excerpt: Leslie Wetzon had a bad feeling when her on-again, off-again lover, Detective Silvestri, began investigating the homicide of an old flame. It was a feeling that only got worse when she learned that the victim was a friend of the woman who runs The Groaning Board. Wetzon's business partner Xenia Smith has just hired the upscale gourmet food service to cater an important dinner party. Soon it seems everything is coming to a boil. Silvestri claims he needs time alone. Xenia is out of control. Wetzon finds herself attracted to a married man. And her phone callers include a heavy breather. If that's not bad enough, someone close to her has an insatiable appetite for murder... and Wetzon may be the next course.

This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 1137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book documents hundreds of customs and traditions practiced in countries outside of the United States, showcasing the diversity of birth, coming-of-age, and death celebrations worldwide. From the beginning of our lives to the end, all of humanity celebrates life's milestones through traditions and unique customs. In the United States, we have specific events like baby showers, rites of passage such as Bat and Bar Mitzvahs and "sweet 16" birthday parties, and sober end-of-life traditions like obituaries and funeral services that honor those who have died. But what kinds of customs and traditions are practiced in other countries? How do people in other cultures welcome babies, prepare to enter into adulthood, and commemorate the end of the lives of loved ones? This three-volume encyclopedia covers more than 300 birth, life, and death customs, with the books' content organized chronologically by life stage. Volume 1 focuses on birth and childhood customs, Volume 2 documents adolescent and early-adulthood customs, and Volume 3 looks at aging and death customs. The entries in the first volume examine pre-birth traditions, such as baby showers and other gift-giving events, and post-birth customs, such as naming ceremonies, child-rearing practices, and traditions performed to ward off evil or promote good health. The second volume contains information about rites of passage as children become adults, including indigenous initiations, marriage customs, and religious ceremonies. The final volume concludes with coverage on customs associated with aging and death, such as retirement celebrations, elaborate funeral processions, and the creation of fantasy coffins. The set features beautiful color inserts that illustrate examples of celebrations and ceremonies and includes an appendix of excerpts from primary documents that include legislation on government-accepted names, wedding vows, and maternity/paternity leave regulations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monstrous births, rains of blood, apparitions of battles in the sky – people in early modern England found all of these events to carry important religious and political meanings. In An age of wonders, available in paperback for the first time, William E. Burns explores the process by which these events became religiously and politically insignificant in the Restoration period. The story involves the establishment of early modern science, the shift from ‘enthusiastic’ to reasonable religion, and the fierce political combat between the Whigs and the Tories. This historical study is based on close readings of a variety of primary sources, both print and manuscript. Burns claims that prodigies lost their religious meaning and became subjects of scientific enquiry as a result of political struggles, first by the supporters of the restored monarchy and the Church of England against Protestant dissenters, and then by the Whig defenders of the Revolution of 1688 against the Tories and the Jacobites. By integrating religious and political history with the history of science, An age of wonders will be of great use to those working in the field of early modern history.

Book excerpt: In this companion to her best-selling books , Carr presents five exciting new mysteries for student detectives to tackle. Students will sharpen their sleuthing skills after completing the course designed for great detectives at the Private Eye School, before moving on to tackle mysteries such as “The Vandal Strikes” and “The Great Electric Train Robbery.” Along the way, students will learn to analyze bloodstains and lip prints, while decoding messages and solving challenging puzzles. Each of these mysteries requires students to think outside of the box, organize data, take notes, make inferences, and use deductive reasoning skills. The mysteries include a teacher's guide and attractive reproducible pages for students to use in their investigations. The Private Eye School also provides directions for creating a classroom learning center, in which students write their own mysteries, create logic puzzles, and sketch crime scenes. Grades 4-8
