Book Synopsis The The Chinese Love Pavilion by : Paul Scott
Download or read book The The Chinese Love Pavilion written by Paul Scott and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-08-14 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Scott is most famous for his much-beloved tetralogy The Raj Quartet, an epic that chronicles the end of the British rule in India with a cast of vividly and memorably drawn characters. Inspired by Scott’s own time spent in India and Malaya during World War II, this two powerful novel provides valuable insight into how foreign lands changed the British who worked and fought in them, hated and loved them. The Chinese Love Pavilion follows a young British clerk, Tom Brent, who must track down a former friend—now suspected of murder—in Malaya. Tom faces great danger, both from the mysterious Malayan jungles and the political tensions between British officers, but the novel is perhaps most memorable for the strange, beautiful romance between Tom and a protean Eurasian beauty whom he meets in the eponymous Chinese Love Pavilion.

Download or read book A Dictionary of Literary Pseudonyms in the English Language written by T.J. Carty and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-03 with total page 859 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its first edition Dictionary of Literary Pseudonyms established itself as a comprehensive dictionary of pseudonyms used by literary writers in English from the 16th century to the present day. This new Second Edition increases coverage by 35%! There are two sequences: Part I - which now includes more than 17,000 entries- is an alphabetical list of pseudonyms followed by the writer's real name. Part II is an alphabetical list of writers cited in Part I-more than 10,000 writers included-providing brief biographical details followed by pseudonyms used by the wrter and titles published under those pseudonyms. Dictionary or Literary Pseudonyms has now become a standard reference work on the subject for teachers, student, and public, high school, and college/universal librarians. The Second Edition will, we believe, consolidate that reputation.
Download or read book The Outside Thing written by Hannah Roche and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a lecture delivered before the University of Oxford’s Anglo-French Society in 1936, Gertrude Stein described romance as “the outside thing, that . . . is always a thing to be felt inside.” Hannah Roche takes Stein’s definition as a principle for the reinterpretation of three major modernist lesbian writers, showing how literary and affective romance played a crucial yet overlooked role in the works of Stein, Radclyffe Hall, and Djuna Barnes. The Outside Thing offers original readings of both canonical and peripheral texts, including Stein’s first novel Q.E.D. (Things As They Are), Hall’s Adam’s Breed and The Well of Loneliness, and Barnes’s early writing alongside Nightwood. Is there an inside space for lesbian writing, or must it always seek refuge elsewhere? Crossing established lines of demarcation between the in and the out, the real and the romantic, and the Victorian and the modernist, The Outside Thing presents romance as a heterosexual plot upon which lesbian writers willfully set up camp. These writers boldly adopted and adapted the romance genre, Roche argues, as a means of staking a queer claim on a heteronormative institution. Refusing to submit or surrender to the “straight” traditions of the romance plot, they turned the rules to their advantage. Drawing upon extensive archival research, The Outside Thing is a significant rethinking of the interconnections between queer writing, lesbian living, and literary modernism.
