Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While best known for literature's greatest, most popular, and most famous vampire novel, Dracula, Bram Stoker also wrote superlative short stories. Indeed, he was a genius at creating horror within the confines of a short tale. Now readers can sample Stoker's mastery in this treasury of fourteen spine-tingling stories. Not all the selections deal with the ghostly and supernatural, but they are always bizarre, and some—like "The Squaw" and "The Burial of the Rats"—are equal to Poe at his best. In addition to these two masterly tales, the collection includes "The Crystal Cup," "The Chain of Destiny," "The Castle of the King," "The Dualists" (probably Stoker's most horrifying story), "The Judge's House," "The Secret of the Growing Gold," "A Dream of Red Hands," "Crooken Sands," "Dracula's Guest," and three more. Lovers of occult and supernatural fiction will delight in this inexpensive collection of ghost and horror stories, called by Stephen King "absolutely champion short stories."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legends of vampires, werewolves, and unruly spirits have been a feature of European folklore for centuries. The authors whose work is collected together in this volume range from early Gothic writers to modern pulp enthusiasts. English writers like John William Polidori (1795-1821), the physician who wrote The Vampyre, and William H. G. Kingston (1814-1880), were pioneers of supernatural fiction, while others chose to master the ghost story. E. F. Benson was a part time archaeologist and M. R. James, a medieval historian at King's College, Cambridge. James would read his ghost stories aloud to his friends and students at Christmas-time. With good reason, he has been described as 'the best ghost-story writer England has ever produced.' Classic literary writers such as Ambrose Bierce and Guy de Maupassant found an outlet for their imagination in their terrifying tales, and later writers like Clifford Ball and M. P. Shiel established supernatural fiction in the pulp magazines of the early 20th century. Together, these stories demonstrate a stunning mastery of atmosphere and show an unmatched ability to terrify readers to this day. This collection features several of the leading purveyors of supernatural horror. Authors include: Clifford Ball E. F. Benson Ambrose Bierce Francis Marion Crawford Charlotte Perkins Gilman M. R. James William H. G. Kingston Arthur Machen Guy de Maupassant John William Polidori M. P. Shiel Bram Stoker

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The short story is often viewed as an inferior relation to the Novel. But it is an art in itself. To take a story and distil its essence into fewer pages while keeping character and plot rounded and driven is not an easy task. Many try and many fail. In this series we look at short stories from many of our most accomplished writers. Miniature masterpieces with a lot to say. In this volume we examine some of the short stories of Bram Stoker.Born in November 1847 in Dublin, Ireland, Abraham Stoker was the third of seven children. Bed ridden with health issues until aged 7 he made a complete recovery on being sent to school. He was an excellent student excelling in maths and with a keen interest in Theatre. He began his career as a theatre critic and after a favourable review was invited to meet the most important actor of the day, Henry Irving. They became great friends. After marriage to Florence Balcombe in 1878 they moved to London where he worked for Irving at his Lyceum theatre. It was here he started to write and then to travel extensively with Irving as he toured. Many of his novels are set from the places he visited though he never did go to Eastern Europe. He wrote many novels during his career but of course Dracula rises above all else. In those last few moments drifting from wake to sleep we sometimes delve into thoughts of a very unpleasant kind. The hint of a shadow moving across the room can give rise to all sorts of troubling, unsettling ideas. Bram Stoker was a master of this effect. Who can forget the masterful creation of Dracula? Its realism built on diary entries, letters, newspapers clippings, ships log's was very clever and contributes to its lasting and pervading impact. Here, his sinister tales saturate your soul and hit your heart with untold fears that, layer by layer, reveal their true unutterable horror. All of these stories are also available as an audiobook from our sister company Word Of Mouth. Many samples are at our youtube channel http: //www.youtube.com/user/PortablePoetry?feature=mhee The full volume can be purchased from iTunes, Amazon and other digital stores. Book excerpt: Dracula, Bram Stoker’s 1897 Gothic vampire story, needs no introduction – a perennial on syllabuses and screens alike, generations have been enchanted and enthralled by the Count from Transylvania. But few of Dracula’s fans have heard of Dracula’s Guest, a short story following – it is thought – Jonathan Harker, as he makes his way to Transylvania, and falls prey to Walpurgis Nacht terrors when he stops off in Munich. Unpublished until after Stoker’s death, when it was collected in a volume of short stories by his widow Florence, who revealed that Stoker had intended for it to be the opening section of his great work, Dracula’s Guest is the missing chapter that will captivate all fans of Stoker’s ‘dangers from snow and wolves and night’. 'The very best story of diablerie which I have read for many years.' — Arthur Conan Doyle

Book excerpt: Most famous for his monumental vampire novel, Dracula, Bram Stoker was hardly a one hit wonder: he was responsible for two other supernatural novels and around two dozen short stories and poems. Largely inspired by the gothic aesthetics of Edgar Allan Poe, E. T. A. Hoffmann, J. Sheridan Le Fanu, and Nathaniel Hawthorne, his stories are at times melancholy, mystical, gory, and gruesome, but always strange and haunting. In this annotated and illustrated edition we have collected the very best of his short stories (eliminating some of his more maudlin, sentimental tales and sticking to the weird and disturbing episodes worthy of the author of Dracula). You'll find torture chambers, murderous ghosts, female vampires, grisly murders, revenge fantasies, gypsy curses, and Gothic tales of doom, terror, and gore. If you enjoyed feasting on Dracula, sit down for the appetizers. TALES INCLUDED in this ANNOTATED EDITION: The Crystal Cup - The Castle of the King - The Dualitists - The Star Trap - The Judge's House - The Growing of the Gold - The Squaw - Crooken Sands - Dracula's Guest - Dracula (Chapters 1-4) - The Gipsy Prophecy - A Dream of Red Hands - The Burial of the Rats - The Coming of Abel Behenna

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the peak of his career, Abraham "Bram" Stoker (November 8, 1847 - April 20, 1912) was working as an assistant for his friend, Shakespearean actor Sir Henry Irving, a well known and acclaimed actor in his day. But it would be the assistant whose name would outshine the boss's. Stoker, an Irish novelist and short story writer, is known around the globe for his Gothic horror character Dracula. Inspired in part by his friend Irving, as well as the notorious Vlad the Impaler, Stoker studied stories about vampires, but ultimately his Count Dracula would become synonymous with the famous monsters. And drawing off his experience as a newspaper writer, Stoker wrote Dracula as a collection of realistic diary entries, telegrams, letters, ship's logs, and newspaper clippings, all of which made the story that much scarier and unique.
