Book excerpt: Quite aside from its natural characteristics, there is an atmosphere about a college town, especially a New England college town, that is unmistakable. It is not so much actively intellectual as passively aware of and satisfied with its own intellectuality. The beautiful little town of Corinth was no exception; from its tree-shaded village green to the white-columned homes on its outskirts it fairly radiated a satisfied sense of its own superiority. Not that the people were smug or self-conceited. They merely accepted the fact that the University of Corinth was among the best in the country and that all true Corinthians were both proud and worthy of it. The village itself was a gem of well-kept streets, roads and houses, and all New England could scarce show a better groomed settlement.

Book excerpt: This is a mystery novel that revolves around the murder of Myra, Perry Heath's wife. Myra had always had money, and recently, because of an uncle's death, had inherited a lot more. No one ever caught a sign of a jarring note between husband and wife, yet no one ever saw a sign of affection. They had two house guests for a bridge party at their place; Lawrence Inman, Myra's distant cousin, and Bunny Moore. On the night of the party, Heath's marital problems come to a head when Myra asks Bunny to leave her husband alone. However, Perry also accuses her of flirting with Larry, her cousin. But she denies this saying Larry is her cousin and heir. Myra is discovered dead on the studio floor the next morning, having been struck by one of her antique bottles and Perry goes missing. To add to the mystery, Myra, a non-cosmetics user, is discovered quite painted and decorated, with the vanity box containing the cosmetics missing. Emily Prentiss couldn't sleep and noticed lights in the night while watching the Heath home out her window when the murder occurred. Todhunter Buck, her nephew, decides to solve the crime on his own and teams up with Alexander Cunningham, who has been appointed by the Country Club and is also curious about where their member Heath has gone. Police Detective Mott questions people without success, so Buck calls in an old friend, private detective Steve Truitt.

Book Synopsis Deep-Lake Mystery by : Carolyn Wells
Download or read book Deep-Lake Mystery written by Carolyn Wells and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1928 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As I look back on my life, eventful enough in spots, but placid, even monotonous in the long stretches between spots, I think the greatest thrill I ever experienced was when I saw the dead body of Sampson Tracy. Imagine to yourself a man, dead in his own bed, with no sign of violence or maltreatment. Eyes partly closed, as he might be peacefully thinking, and no expression of fear or horror on his calm face. Now add to your mental picture the fact that he had round his brow a few flowers arranged as a wreath. More flowers diagonally across his breast, like a garland. Clasped in his right hand, against his heart, an ivory crucifix, and in his left hand an orange. Sticking up from behind his head showed the plume of a red feather duster! And draped round all this, like a frame, was a red chiffon scarf, a filmy but voluminous affair, deftly tucked in here and there, and encircling all the strange and bizarre details I have enumerated.
