C The Army Medical Service made immense strides towards efficiency in the years succeeding the South African War. Those who were at that time responsible for its organisation profited by the experience gained, and took steps to improve the organisation of the medical service as it then existed. The newly organised service entered the field at Mons, and at once was subjected to the most severe ordeal which the medical service of an army can undergo, namely, a rapid retreat necessitated by the overwhelming numerical superiority of the enemy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Great War It was tragic that the men and women who fought the war were too busy to study it. The greatest peril of the new era is that they will still be too busy with reconstruction to devote even casual attention to the great event itself, in the light of which alone can the decisions be made by which the new era is to be shaped. People are weary of working and weary of reading. Yet there was never a time when effort was more necessary nor when a little would have such significant results upon national and international events. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Great War, Vol. 1 This work in its original form appeared in twenty-four volumes between February 1915 and July mm, and was therefore written and published for the most part during the progress of the campaign. Begun as an experiment to pass the time during a period of enforced inaction, its large sales and the evidence forthcoming that it met a certain need induced me to continue it as a duty, and the bulk of it was written in the scanty leisure which I could snatch from service abroad and at home. Any narrative produced under such conditions must bristle with imperfections. It will contain many errors of fact. The writer cannot stage his drama or prepare the reader for a sudden change by a gradual revelation of its causes. His work must have something of the apparent inconsequence of real life. He records one month a sanguine mood and a hopeful forecast; three months later he will tell of depression and of expectations belied. He must set out interim judgments, and presently recant them. Book Synopsis Three Years of the Great War by : Frank Herbert Simonds
Download or read book Three Years of the Great War written by Frank Herbert Simonds and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Years of the Great War: A Comprehensive Review With the declining importance of the war correspondent, due to the immensity and stricter censorship of modern warfare, has come the rise of the great war editor. The new center of military information is this master student who, versed in the geography and topography of the fighting countries, and possessing an accurate estimate of the strength of the contending forces and a first-hand knowledge of the morale of the men, traces the ebb and flow of the lines on each of the fronts; watches with hawk eyes the seeming minor events that indicate a coming drive or retreat; and, with almost prophetic pen, points out what to expect shortly at a given point. The one American editor ideally equipped for his great task is Frank H. Simonds. For years before this war Mr. Simonds was a reporter for metropolitan newspapers in positions that brought him into contact with the biggest men in this country. In Washington and Albany he acquired a political insight that proved invaluable to him when he came to study the present war where so many military movements are undertaken with an eye to purely political effect in one country or another. For years before this war Mr. Simonds made the study of geography and military history his hobby. He pored over all available accounts of the strategic campaigns of the American Civil War and those European struggles, the Napoleonic and others, that were fought over the same ground where the front line trenches now stand. Book Synopsis A Concise Chronicle of Events of the Great War (Classic Reprint) by : R. P. P. Rowe

This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Concise Chronicle of Events of the Great War I trust that this chronicle of the chief events of the war will prove a useful and an interesting record. It has been decided to omit maps, because their inclusion within bounds less than cumbersome would prove practically worthless. The number of towns, as opposed to villages, which were definitely connected with the war is surprisingly small, and their locality is known to nearly every one. The great majority of places which the war has brought into prominence are villages so small that they are marked only in maps of an exceptionally large scale. What is required, therefore, for adequate study of the topography of the war, is either a moderate number of maps of great size or a far larger and confusing number less bulky but each covering only a small area. As the inclusion of either would necessitate a detached and cumbrous volume, I have in its absence taken pains to indicate accurately the posi tion of every place whose locality might be unfamiliar. In the following pages the names given to the battles, and the dates on which they began and ended, are from sources either official or authoritative. The same may be said of the strategical or tactical aims or results which I have in some cases noted - particularly in 1918. Download or read book Tales of the Great War (Classic Reprint) written by Henry John Newbolt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of the Great War MY dear g., -i have written this book and you are going to read it - we are partners and must play up to each other. Let me tell you my idea Of how it should be done. My part is to give you the truth, the actual facts, well evidenced and clearly arranged. Your part is to read them in such a way as to understand them - that is, to understand not only what happened, but how heroic and how admirable are the qualities which lie behind. You will see, as you read, why I ask you to play up and do your part. It is because I cannot do it for you. I have told you here of good work and courage and endurance, such as deserve all the loudest adjectives that I could have shouted at you; but I have not shouted, and I have used as few adjectives as possible. It is you, not I, that must make the stories come alive. You will not, I hope, imagine that I have written coldly; no - but the hotter I got myself the more keenly I wished you to be kindled by your own feelings, and not by my words. If you find yourself glorying in these records as I do, come and tell me so when the War is over, and we will get a little music and make a noise together.
