Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This resource uniquely offers preservice and inservice teachers templates for using quality children's literature to implement six themes across grades K-8. The themes are based on national curriculum standards and text sets are carefully selected to facilitate discussion, analysis, and problem solving across the grades. Using Children's Literature Across the Curriculum, provides teachers with a guide to using multilayered texts to facilitate students' attainment of critical literacy. It is designed to be a supplemental text to guide teachers in designing literacy instruction. The instructional sequence includes collaborative inquiry activities across the curriculum to extend each theme to math, science, technology and social studies. Teachers are shown how to incorporate family literacy with a component entitled 'Home School Connections' and to differentiate instruction for individual learners with a section entitled 'On Your Own Activities'. The theme concludes with a critical literacy activity that applies the content knowledge of the theme with collaborative inquiry. A unique feature of the handbook is the emphasis on performance based assessment with each instructional sequence containing two rubrics for the teacher to implement. The instructional sequences are meant as models for teachers to use in developing their own themes in order to facilitate critical literacy. These 'models' can be adjusted to fit the reading level of the students as teachers become more familiar with the text's structure and their students' needs.

There are opportunities for teaching and learning writing in all subjects and all lessons. Inviting Writing supports you to find these opportunities and to plan, assess and develop children’s writing for a range of purposes in a range of styles. Chapters cover every curriculum subject and explore the unique writing opportunities for each one. It helps you to focus on teaching the skills of composition and on taking writing forward. Examples of good practice are included throughout, alongside suggestions for teaching activities. This book also outlines the many ways in which children′s writing can be evidenced and encourages you to reconsider the ways in which children′s progress in writing can be tracked and captured. This is a practical guide to teaching writing across the curriculum.

Grace and Box have become fast friends. Box delivered a refrigerator earlier in the week and by the end of it, Grace and Box had already been to space, gone camping, and explored the depths of the sea together. But on Sunday, Grace notices something’s wrong with her buddy. Box has some rips and crumples that Band-Aids, ice packs, and rest on the couch can’t seem to heal. Grace certainly doesn't want these adventures to end, so she is determined to fix Box so that they can continue their play together! A universal friendship (child and box) has come alive in this imaginative and humorous picture book. The depths of friendships run deep with children, even if they're just boxes to us!
