Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Grave with Greener Grass—“I don’t know how to say this without sounding like the stereotypical greedy relative.” This statement thrusts Sly Harrell into a mystery that seems to have more dead ends than an undeveloped subdivision. A descendant of one of Florida’s first families pursues a family ritual with the promise of a treasure at its solving. Annually, the senior living female of the heritage line is obligated to stand in front of a gravestone and recite from a letter passed from mother to daughter. The major clue: the grass covering the grave is always greener than those around it. But why? And after over a hundred years is the clue meaningless? The potential heir believes she knows “in general,” where the grave is and what’s in it but needs to decipher a clue to prove her theory, and she wants Sly’s influence and help to solve the mystery. But they find what they did not expect: a body incased in phosphate lies on top of the patriarch’s coffin. Is it a true dead end? Two 124-years-old corpses aren’t the only clues. Another clue stands unrecognized in plain sight. When Sly finally unravels the secret, he has one last challenge to reclaim a treasure of gold coins . . . and to stay alive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “marvelously funny” and much-loved humorist explores the perils of suburban living in this New York Times bestseller (Vogue). For years, the Bombecks have heard rumors of a magical land called Suburbia where the air is clean, the grass is trimmed, and children don’t risk getting mugged on their walk to school. After watching their friends flee the city for subdivided utopias like Bonaparte’s Retreat and Mortgage Mañana, Erma and her family load up their belongings and cry, “Station wagons . . . ho!” But life on the suburban frontier is not as perfect as they had hoped. The trees are stunted, the house is cramped, and there’s no grass at all. But the Bombecks will make do, for they are suburbanites now—the last true pioneers! This ebook features an illustrated biography of Erma Bombeck including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the author’s estate.
Book Synopsis The Grass is Greener Over Your Grave by : Stuart Cooke
Download or read book The Grass is Greener Over Your Grave written by Stuart Cooke and published by . This book was released on 2023-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If Cooke's previous book, Lyre, urged us towards the 'more' of the more-than-human world, then The grass is greener over your grave returns to the 'human' end of that spectrum--though always with an eye to the porosity of the human and its immersion in waves of land, language, dream, and sea. Typically wide-ranging in form, this new collection develops Cooke's preoccupations with colonisation, ecology, metaphysics, and travel, while also acknowledging their heritage in the life and work of the late poet Martin Harrison. 'An extended elegy to a late friend and mentor, this is a culmination of the phenomenological and fiercely attentive place-based writing that has preoccupied Cooke's work to date. Traces of other local poetic influences - Phillip Hodgins, Jennifer Rankin and John Anderson - are visible and audible in Cooke's eventful treatment of the prose line and internal rhyme. There is, too, the emergence of a tougher, cooler voice; at times self-satirising, reminiscent of John Mateer's personae, Cooke brings forward a lyric character who treads these poems with ironic scrutiny, reflecting the author's ongoing work at the crossroads of non-Indigenous language and culture.' - Bonny Cassidy

Book Synopsis Decoration Day in the Mountains by : Alan Jabbour
Download or read book Decoration Day in the Mountains written by Alan Jabbour and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2010-05-31 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decoration Day is a late spring or summer tradition that involves cleaning a community cemetery, decorating it with flowers, holding a religious service in the cemetery, and having dinner on the ground. These commemorations seem to predate the post-Civil War celebrations that ultimately gave us our national Memorial Day. Little has been written about this tradition, but it is still observed widely throughout the Upland South, from North Carolina to the Ozarks. Written by internationally recognized folklorist Alan Jabbour and illustrated with more than a hundred photographs taken by Karen Singer Jabbour, Decoration Day in the Mountains is an in-depth exploration of this little-known cultural tradition. The Jabbours illuminate the meanings behind the rituals and reveal how the tradition fostered a grassroots movement to hold the federal government to its promises about cemeteries left behind when families were removed to make way for Fontana Dam and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Richly illustrated and vividly written, Decoration Day in the Mountains presents a compelling account of a widespread and long-standing Southern cultural practice.
Book Synopsis Memoirs from Beyond the Grave: 1800-1815 by : François-Réne Chateaubriand
Download or read book Memoirs from Beyond the Grave: 1800-1815 written by François-Réne Chateaubriand and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2022-09-27 with total page 801 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second part of an infamous memoir about life in the time of Napoleon by a rebellious literary celebrity. In 1800, François-René de Chateaubriand sailed from the cliffs of Dover to the headlands of Calais. He was thirty-one and had been living as a political refugee in England for most of a decade, at times in such extreme poverty that he subsisted on nothing but hot water and two-penny rolls. Over the next fifteen years, his life was utterly changed. He published Atala, René, and The Genius of Christianity to acclaim and epoch-making scandal. He strolled the streets of Jerusalem and mapped the ruins of Carthage. He served Napoleon in Rome, then resigned in protest after the Duc d’Enghien’s execution, putting his own life at tremendous risk. Memoirs from Beyond the Grave: 1800–1815—the second volume in Alex Andriesse’s new and complete translation of this epic French classic—is a chronicle of triumphs and sorrows, narrating not only the author’s life during a tumultuous period in European history but the “parallel life” of Napoleon. In these pages, Chateaubriand continues to paint his distinctive self-portrait, in which the whole history of France swirls around the sitter like a mist of dreams.
Book Synopsis At the Grave's Mouth by : Fran Montane
Download or read book At the Grave's Mouth written by Fran Montane and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fran's deepest concerns are thoroughly existential, altogether more serious than those of the mere literary formalist. Her work is grounded in an unstinting search for meaning, a relentless effort to find speech in the presence of life's silencing mysteries. At the Grave's Mouth, the early poems of Fran Montane, is an experience in consciousness D an idiolect at once speculative and visceral, tragic and satirical, dark and picaresque. As poet and lesbian, having worked with a silent, almost secret passion on her verse she offers a unique vision of the Kali Yuga D the dark age in Indian philosophy in which we are living which leads to the new cycle of the Satya Yuga D the age of truth, a position she pursues in her later works. I think you'll find this work exceptional from both an artistic standpoint and in the context of the times in which we live. She very well may be the Arthur Rimbaud and Jim Morrison of the new Millenium. Tom Ross, Performance and Visual Artist, Director

Download or read book One Foot in the Grave My Life on an Artificial Leg written by Don Addor and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2011-06-30 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was born in July of 1925. During my growing up days a popular expression for some one who looked like they had been very sick was, You look like you have one foot in the grave! Of course this was a metaphor back then. It wasnt until after World War II that it became a reality for me. I had not heard this expression for some time. Then in the spring of 1945 I arrived on the amputee ward at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. I had lost my right leg above the knee due to wounds received during the defense of Bastogne, Belgium during the later stages of WW II. On my first experience of the doctors morning rounds to check out his patients, I heard this at the first bed the doctor stopped at. He asked, How are you feeling? The patient answered, Not too bad considering I have one foot in the grave! This had become the standard reply by the patients on Ward 10-A. When the doctor and his assistants stopped in front of my bed, I stuck with tradition and answered, Not bad considering I have one foot in the grave! Now the expression had a double meaning for me and my fellow amputee patients at the hospital.
