Book excerpt: Combining biography - based on excerpts from letters, interviews, and critical art reviews - with a selection of Sandzen's art, this book by Emory Lindquist brings to life Birger Sandzen, who used bold brush strokes and brilliant colors to express the landscapes he admired and generosity, humor, and diligence to express himself. More than just an artist, Sandzen was a gifted teacher, linguist and translator, musician, and devoted husband and father. He kept in touch with art trends and fellow artists; traveled throughout the United States, Mexico, and Europe; wrote short stories and articles on art; and read widely on social, economic, and international developments. Despite gaining a prosperous international reputation as an artist - his works have appeared in more than 600 exhibitions in the United States and Europe - the European-trained artist chose to live in Lindsborg, Kansas, rather than New York, the heart of the American art world. Although Sandzen and what was then called the modern school were somewhat of an anomaly on the prairie, he did not regret living in the Midwest. Sandzen found his artistic freedom along Kansas rivers, in Colorado mountains, and in southwestern deserts. Where others saw lifeless aridity or uninspiring treeless expanses, he would find "huge boulders or fantastic fortresses and castles". Along a Kansas creek he would envision "perpendicular sandstone walls, high and gay colored palaces, minarets and temple ruins loomed up against the sparkling greenish blue sky". In 1894, 23-year-old Birger Sandzen set sail from his native Sweden for a two- or three-year teaching appointment at Bethany College in Lindsborg. Two years stretched into sixty and resulted ina legacy that left a lasting impression not only on Sandzen's students but on everyone who views his illuminating images.

Book excerpt: This extraordinary and breathtakingly beautiful book celebrates a lifetime of collecting passion. Oliver Hoare, one of London's most distinguished dealers, originally learnt his craft in the company of Bruce Chatwin. His love of the rare, the evocative, the seductive shines out from every stunning object in this collection and the stories that he teases out from them. No one could fail to be drawn into this gorgeous labyrinth. Published to coincide with an exhibition held in the magnificent settings of the Lavery Room in Sir John Millais's studio house in South Kensington, the book includes antiquities from the ancient and classical worlds; objects connected to shamanism, magic and alchemy; engravings by D rer, Hollar and Rembrandt; unusual paintings and textiles; and many curiosities Highlights include: the silver libation cup of M ngke Khan, grandson of Genghis and ruler of an empire that stretched from modern Bucharest to Peking, and Karachi to Novgorod; the apple from the Garden of Eden - a silver pomander belonging to the Stuart Kings, with bite marks, opening to reveal a silver skull; a Scythian (6-7th centuries BC) jade pendant of the endangered Saiga antelope, as finely carved as anything by Faberg ; a bronze Bacchus head from a tripod table belonging to the Emperor Augustus; a limestone bear carved in 3rd millenium BC Bactria. "The point of the exhibition, as its title announces, is to celebrate the fascinating, and often peculiar stories attached to works of art. The criterion for what is presented has little to do with the value of objects and therefore it differs from the more conventional 'Cabinet of Curiosities'. Nor does it reflect the current canon of what is seen as beautiful or culturally significant, although there are significant and beautiful works of art by anyone's standards. The catalogue is, hopefully, the work of a storyteller's art." Oliver Hoare

Book excerpt: Iranian art of the Qajar period (1779-1925) has long been neglected and is little understood. This beautifully illustrated book for the first time comprehensively examines the flowering of Persian painting and the visual arts of this period. It focuses on the growth of a remarkable tradition of life-size figural painting, virtually unseen in the Islamic world. Exquisite historic manuscripts, lacquer works, calligraphies and enamels further illuminate the subject. The Qajar Epoch carries essays by leading scholars exploring the historical and social context of the period. Detailed entries describing and interpreting a wide variety of painting and artifacts, many hitherto unseen masterpieces from museums such as the Hermitage and private collections are virtually all illustrated in color and accompanied by translations of inscriptions, technical appendices and extensive bibliographies. A unique reference work, The Qajar Epoch will appeal to both specialist of pre-modern Iran and all those interested in non-Western artistic and cultural traditions.

Book excerpt: Sure, there's no place like home--but what if you can't really pinpoint where home is? By the time she was nine, Tracy Seeley had lived in seven towns and thirteen different houses. Her father's dreams of movie stardom, stoked by a series of affairs, kept the family on edge, and on the move, until he up and left. Thirty years later, settled in what seems like a charmed life in San Francisco, a diagnosis of cancer and the betrayal of a lover shake Seeley to her roots--roots she is suddenly determined to search out.My Ruby Slipperstells the story of that search, the tale of a woman with an impassioned if vague sense of mission: to find the meaning of home. Seeley finds herself in a Kansas that defies memory, a place far more complex and elusive than the sum of its cultural myths. On back roads and in her many back years, Seeley also finds unexpected forgiveness for her errant father, and, in the face of mortality, a sense of what it means to be rooted in place, to dwell deeply in the only life we have.
