Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Prints of Emil Ganso fills the serious need for documentation of the prints of a remarkable artist who made a major contribution to printmaking in America." "Ganso left no records and was haphazard in titling his prints, giving edition sizes, and signing his work. He used the same titles over and over, and often gave an image more than one title - in several cases as many as four different titles." "As a consequence, the compiling of information on Ganso's prints resembled the production of a mosaic. Information was gathered from the inscriptions on Ganso's prints in public and private collections, accession cards and records in museums, files of clippings in libraries, gallery sales lists, museum exhibition lists, articles in old art journals, books on printmaking, and the artist's correspondence. Except for a few that cannot be located, each print is reproduced in this catalog. Details are given on titles, media, years, dimensions, and edition sizes, as well as other relevant information. A biographic sketch traces Ganso's life from a village in Germany to a faculty post at a leading American university."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Cultivating Citizens rethinks the aesthetics and politics of regionalism in the United States during the 1930s and 1940s. During this period, painters Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, and John Steuart Curry formed a loose alliance as American Regionalists. Some lauded their depictions of the rural landscape and hardworking inhabitants of America's midwestern heartland. Others deemed Regionalist painting dangerous, regarding its easily understood realism as a vehicle for jingoism, chauvinism, and even fascism. Cultivating Citizens shifts the terms of this ongoing debate over subject matter and style by considering heretofore neglected Regionalist programs of art education and concepts of artistic labor."--Provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: Chronicling the developments and significance of lithography in the United States, Adams offers not only a detailed survey of the medium between 1900 and 1960, but also a personal recollection of the many figures who shaped its course. He presents the story of the artists and their printers, their personal interrelationships, and their creative work in what he calls a "beautiful but obstinate medium." While the names of printers Albert Sterner, Bolton Brown, George Miller, and Joseph Pennell are pivotal in this story, most of the leading artists of the century have been attracted to lithography, among them George Bellows, Thomas Hart Benton, Stuart Davis, Reginald Marsh, Jackson Pollock, and Charles Sheeler. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wilber Moore Stilwell (1908-1974) a 1930's WPA and independent American artist, educator, inventor was nationally one of 25 art educators awarded a gold medal by First Lady Johnson in 1966 at the White House in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the National Gallery of Art, as she noted in her published diary. Stilwell attended the prestigious Kansas City Art Institute and was a contemporary of, a public advocate for and a friend of Thomas Hart Benton. Alison Erazmus , former Director of University Art Galleries at the University of South Dakota wrote "Stilwell completed his master's degree at one of the most important graduate art programs for Regionalist art at the University of Iowa in 1940" before going on to become Chairman of the art department at University of South Dakota for twenty-six years. Before the 1940's, he competed in public art shows earning many awards. After the 1940's he crafted his public artist persona as educator. Before Stilwell died in 1974 at age 66, he worked daily in the privacy of his home on his art. Until 2009 at the "Rediscovered Talent: Exhibition of the Work of Wilber Stilwell" curated by John A. Day at the University of South Dakota, the public was unaware of him being a prolific working artist. The Stilwell collection includes oil paintings, watercolors, pastels, graphite drawings, notes on art education, notes for art manuscripts unpublished, cartoons, invention ideas, original lithographs...thousands of items. Scholar/curator Dr. Lea Rosson DeLong notes: "One of my primary goals in my work on Stilwell, therefore, has been to re-introduce this hitherto under-recognized figure whose life-long production deserves to be recognized and integrated into the art history of his time...His work encompassed a larger range than that [1930's Regionalism]...Though recognized for his contributions to art education, his more enduring legacy may well be those many small landscapes created as he worked alone, studying and recording the American Plains."
