Book Synopsis Escaping the Delusions of Culture by : Sterling T. Anderson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As I began to write what originally started out to be a family orientated portrayal (of which much still is), race and the influence of politics and religion became increasingly important factors to acknowledge. They are inextricably bound together in the consciousness of America. Decisions made by elected and unelected officials affect virtually every aspect of our lives - whether we know it or not. Where buildings are built, where roads are constructed, where services are and are not provided, how the administration of justice is meted out, the list goes on. These decisions are ultimately made by the political class. The attitudes of those holding office will affect how these resources are allocated. If there is a price to be paid by those decisions it’s felt by those with the least political and financial clout. The book is broken up into many different segments all of which play a part in either illuminating particular themes mentioned above, sharing family insights, and of high proirity to the writer, rising in the mind of the reader the desire to question the previously unquestioned and if motivated challenge those previously unquestioned assumptions. I hope the reader finds this book as interesting to read as I found it to write.

Book Synopsis The Anthology and the Rise of the Novel by : Leah Price
Download or read book The Anthology and the Rise of the Novel written by Leah Price and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-07-17 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Anthology and the Rise of the Novel, first published in 2000, brings together two traditionally antagonistic fields, book history and narrative theory, to challenge established theories of 'the rise of the novel'. Leah Price shows that far from leveling class or gender distinctions, as has long been claimed, the novel has consistently located them within its own audience. Shedding new light on Richardson and Radcliffe, Scott and George Eliot, this book asks why the epistolary novel disappeared, how the book review emerged, why eighteenth-century abridgers designed their books for women while Victorian publishers marketed them to men, and how editors' reproduction of old texts has shaped authors' production of new ones. This innovative study will change the way we think not just about the history of reading, but about the genealogy of the canon wars, the future of intellectual property, and the role that anthologies play in our own classrooms.

Book Synopsis Reading Daughters' Fictions 1709-1834 by : Caroline Gonda
Download or read book Reading Daughters' Fictions 1709-1834 written by Caroline Gonda and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-03-14 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been argued that the eighteenth century witnessed a decline in paternal authority, and the emergence of more intimate, affectionate relationships between parent and child. In Reading Daughters' Fictions, Caroline Gonda draws on a wide range of novels and non-literary materials from the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, in order to examine changing representations of the father-daughter bond. She shows that heroine-centred novels, aimed at a predominantly female readership, had an important part to play in female socialization and the construction of heterosexuality, in which the father-daughter relationship had a central role. Contemporary diatribes against novels claimed that reading fiction produced rebellious daughters, fallen women, and nervous female wrecks. Gonda's study of novels of family life and courtship suggests that, far from corrupting the female reader, such fictions helped to maintain rather than undermine familial and social order.

Book Synopsis Women and Gift Exchange in Eighteenth-Century Fiction by : Linda Zionkowski
Download or read book Women and Gift Exchange in Eighteenth-Century Fiction written by Linda Zionkowski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-26 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes why the most influential novelists of the long eighteenth century centered their narratives on the theory and practice of gift exchange. Throughout this period, fundamental shifts in economic theories regarding the sources of individual and national wealth along with transformations in the practices of personal and institutional charity profoundly altered cultural understandings of the gift's rationale, purpose, and function. Drawing on materials such as sermons, conduct books, works of political philosophy, and tracts on social reform, Zionkowski challenges the idea that capitalist discourse was the dominant influence on the development of prose fiction. Instead, by shifting attention to the gift system as it was imagined and enacted in the formative years of the novel, the volume offers an innovative understanding of how the economy of obligation shaped writers' portrayals of class and gender identity, property, and community. Through theoretically-informed readings of Richardson's Clarissa and Sir Charles Grandison, Burney's Cecilia and The Wanderer, and Austen's Mansfield Park and Emma, the book foregrounds the issues of donation, reciprocity, indebtedness, and gratitude as it investigates the conflicts between the market and moral economies and analyzes women's position at the center of these conflicts. As this study reveals, the exchanges that eighteenth-century fiction prescribed for women confirm the continuing power and importance of gift transactions in the midst of an increasingly commercial culture. The volume will be essential reading for scholars of the eighteenth-century novel, economic literary criticism, women and gender studies, and book history.
