Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "THE OHIO RIVER TRILOGY: Betty Zane + The Spirit of the Border + The Last Trail (Western Classics Series)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. "Betty Zane" is a historical novel about Elizabeth "Betty" Zane McLaughlin Clark (1765-1823), a heroine of the Revolutionary War on the American frontier. The author Zane Grey is her great-grandnephew. "Spirit of the Border" is a historical novel based on events occurring in the Ohio River Valley in the late eighteenth century. It features the exploits of Lewis Wetzel, a historical personage who had dedicated his life to the destruction of Native Americans and to the protection of nascent white settlements in that region. The story deals with the attempt by Moravian Church missionaries to Christianize Indians and how two brothers' lives take different paths upon their arrival on the border. A highly romanticized account, the novel is the second in a trilogy, the first of which is Betty Zane, Grey's first published work, and "The Last Trail", which focuses on the life of Jonathan Zane, Grey's ancestor. Zane Grey (1872-1939) was an American author best known for his popular adventure novels and stories that were a basis for the Western genre in literature and the arts. With his veracity and emotional intensity, he connected with millions of readers worldwide, during peacetime and war, and inspired many Western writers who followed him. Grey was a major force in shaping the myths of the Old West; his books and stories were adapted into other media, such as film and TV productions. He was the author of more than 90 books, some published posthumously and/or based on serials originally published in magazines. Table of Contents: Betty Zane The Spirit of the Border The Last Trail

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Success will destroy elemental magic. Failure condemns this world and the next. Pick up the award-winning series, nominated for Best Book of 2017 and winner of Best Worldbuilding, and enter a story described as “Brilliantly contrived and beautifully executed, it reminds us why we love the genre” and, “This was pure magic and 'Epic Fantasy' at its very best.” Six months after a tragic war, the world of Myrrah has found peace. But many of the heroes have not. When Zhao’s reluctant homecoming sparks a battle over the fate of Elementals among his people, he calls on his friends for help only to find they are busy with new problems of their own. And one has the potential to end all magic. For nearly destroying the world in an ancient war, the Ashanti were cursed by the Goddess Mhyrah with lifespans of less than a decade. To regain normal lives for his people, Beh’kana, the Ashanti King, will defy the traditions handed down since the dawn of time, even if that means rekindling an ancient feud—one that nearly destroyed the world before it fully began. His quest to conquer death and gain control of the source of all elemental magic—the spirit realm—threatens to burn the world to ashes. Lavinia did not seek to be named Guardian of the Spheres when she touched each to gain control of elemental power. But now that choice has propelled her to being the key to stopping the Ashanti. She controls the gates that allow magic into the world, and she must close them to prevent the Ashanti from crossing into the spirit realm and gaining power beyond imagination—enough to enslave or destroy the world they once sought to rule. But with the closure of each gate, an elemental power is lost, and those who stand against the Ashanti are less able to fight a threat that seeks control over life and death. Welcome back to the world of Myrrah, full of elemental magic and epic fantasy adventure! The fate of the world hangs in the balance, and the sacrifice to save it might be elemental magic. Discover this exhilarating tale that has received praise such as “It is the sort of read that reminds us how great fantasy can be.” and, “Strong characters and a beautiful world hold up a fine story. S. Lewis “Mervyn Peake is a finer poet than Edgar Allan Poe, and he is therefore able to maintain his world of fantasy brilliantly through three novels. It is a very, very great work . . . A classic of our age.” —Robertson Davies “[A] magnificent ediface spun from thin air by a tortured genius.” —Liz Jensen, author of The Rapture “This extravagant epic about a labyrinthine castle populated with conniving Dickensian grotesques is the true fantasy classic of our time.” —Washington Post Book World
Book Synopsis Asian American Film Festivals by : Erin Franziska Högerle
Download or read book Asian American Film Festivals written by Erin Franziska Högerle and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Responding to a lack of studies on the film festival’s role in the production of cultural memory, this book explores different parameters through which film festivals shape our reception and memories of films. By focusing on two Asian American film festivals, this book analyzes the frames of memory that festivals create for their films, constructed through and circulated by the various festival media. It further establishes that festival locations—both cities and screening venues—play a significant role in shaping our experience of films. Finally, it shows that festivals produce performances which help guide audiences towards certain readings and direct the film’s role as a memory object. Bringing together film festival studies and memory studies, 'Asian American Film Festivals' offers a mixed-methods approach with which to explore the film festival phenomenon, thus shedding light on the complex dynamics of frames, locations, and performances shaping the festival’s memory practices. It also draws attention to the understudied genre of Asian American film festivals, showing how these festivals actively engage in constructing and performing a minority group’s collective identity and memory.

Book Synopsis The Hypersexuality of Race by : Celine Parreñas Shimizu
Download or read book The Hypersexuality of Race written by Celine Parreñas Shimizu and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2007-07-30 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Hypersexuality of Race, Celine Parreñas Shimizu urges a shift in thinking about sexualized depictions of Asian/American women in film, video, and theatrical productions. Shimizu advocates moving beyond denunciations of sexualized representations of Asian/American women as necessarily demeaning or negative. Arguing for a more nuanced approach to the mysterious mix of pleasure, pain, and power in performances of sexuality, she advances a theory of “productive perversity,” a theory which allows Asian/American women—and by extension other women of color—to lay claim to their own sexuality and desires as actors, producers, critics, and spectators. Shimizu combines theoretical and textual analysis and interviews with artists involved in various productions. She complicates understandings of the controversial portrayals of Asian female sexuality in the popular Broadway musical Miss Saigon by drawing on ethnographic research and interviews with some of the actresses in it. She looks at how three Hollywood Asian/American femme fatales—Anna May Wong, Nancy Kwan, and Lucy Liu—negotiate representations of their sexuality; analyzes 1920s and 1930s stag films in which white women perform as sexualized Asian characters; and considers Asian/American women’s performances in films ranging from the stag pornography of the 1940s to the Internet and video porn of the 1990s. She also reflects on two documentaries depicting Southeast Asian prostitutes and sex tourism, The Good Woman of Bangkok and 101 Asian Debutantes. In her examination of films and videos made by Asian/American feminists, Shimizu describes how female characters in their works reject normative definitions of race, gender, and sexuality, thereby expanding our definitions of racialized sexualities in representation.
