Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Government of the People, of the State of Ohio It is not the national government, but the State government, acting through its local agencies, to which the American looks for the protection of life and property, for the security of his home and family, and for the education of his children. To understand the workings of State and local government is, therefore, even more important than to know the details of the national government. Since, however, the beginnings of no two States have been the same, the governments of hardly any two are alike, and no general description of the American State, as a mere chapter in American civil government, exactly fits any actual State. It is the purpose of this book, accordingly, to present such an outline of the civic history and of the governmental machinery of the State of Ohio as will enable youth in the high schools, and the higher grades of the grammar and rural schools, to understand both what the government is, and how it came to be, and what the duties and responsibilities are of citizens of Ohio. It is not possible to note in this book all the variations in county, township, and municipal government and powers, due to special legislation. The general type has been carefully given, and the leading exceptions have been indicated. Each teacher should ascertain and call attention to the peculiarities, if any exist, in local organization in his county and township, village, or city. While a knowledge of the form and powers of the government is important, two things should be borne in mind in the teaching of civics: (1) that concrete examples of governmental work drawn from local observation and study are the best aids to an understanding of the use and operations of orderly government, and (2) that the knowledge of forms and powers is barren, except as it leads to a conception of the duty and responsibility of each citizen under those forms for the right exercise of the powers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Government of Ohio: Its History and Administration This book is intended to give in brief compass a comprehensive account of the government of the State of Ohio as it has developed to the present year - the hundredth anniversary of Ohio's admission to Statehood. The plan of treatment conforms in general to that laid down for all the volumes of the series to which this book belongs, but several features have been suggested by the excellent work of Professor W. C. Morey on The Government of New York, which also appears in this series. In accordance with this plan, the growth of the government during the fifteen years of its Territorial life and the hundred years of its life as a State has been treated in Part I (Chapters I and II); the structure of the government has been described in Part II (Chapters III, IV, V, and VI); and the work of the government has been set forth in Part III (Chapters VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, and XII). It will be seen from this arrangement that an effort has been made to lay due stress on the functions of the State, a subject generally slighted despite the fact that these functions are an expression of the will of the people, are performed for the benefit of the people, and constitute the objects for which a modern government exists. Download or read book For Peace, and Peaceable Separation written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from For Peace, and Peaceable Separation: Citizen's Democratic Address, to the People of the State of Ohio, and the People of the Several States of the West and North Of every badge of self-government, under a civil or mili tary consolidation, centralized in the city of new-york by the force of some major-general, or the fraud of statesmen, to whom that city is the fulcrum. From the very edge of such a precipice, which it is wise to foresee, and patriot ism to denounce, we call on the interior States, Ohio at. Their hea'd, to prepare their minds against a more intolerable despotism than the present. When this sectional war with the South comes to an end, by an acknowledged separa tion, the law of self-preservation will force us to fly to tlie State - Rights doctrine of the Federal system. We must assert our right to choose our associates for the State of Ohio and her sister States, and make such reservations, ex pressly of our social and political independence, as will deter any-set of masters from trying their hands at consolida tion of State-sovereignties into one Imperial Republic. The foundation of the Federal system is the unanimous consent of the States, who are each and all its voluntary constit neuts, and solely bound within the union by their separ ate consent. When we take our stand there, we are safe; for the fortress that never yields to secret or open foe, t( blows or bribes, is for both men and States, in peace and war the same-it is the rock of principle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ohio Politics During the Civil War Period The material for a study of the war period exists in a somewhat fragmentary condition. Many local newspapers have not been preserved, while a number of public reports and other documents have either been destroyed or are not accessible to the student. There is great need of a Public Archives Commission to undertake the work of preserving and arranging the historical material of the state. During the progress of my research, I have been greatly assisted by many persons who have manifested an interest in the subject. Mr. C. B. Galbreath, of the Ohio State Library, has rendered invaluable service both in aiding me to secure material and in making suggestions on the treat ment of various topics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ohio Legislative History, 1909-1913: Administration of Judson Harmon, Governor of Ohio, 1909-1912 According to the terms of the aforesaid resolution, authorizing the work to be done under the supervision of the Lieutenant Governor and Speaker of the House of Representatives, james K. Mercer was duly appointed to prepare the first volume of the work, which is here pre sented as Ohio Legislative History, Vol. 1, and the Administration of Governor Harmon, 1909-12. Besides, there is included a symposium of views of the work of the Fourth Ohio Constitutional Convention, contributed by members of the convention, which, it is believed, will make the very best possible review of the convention, for the purposes of history. There will also be found a chapter on Civil Government in Ohio, by Professor Morris, of Lancaster, Ohio, and this, it is hoped, will aid students in high schools and colleges to better understand the form of government under which they live. In the history of legislation will be found a complete summary of all the bills of State-wide application that became laws at the regular sessions of the 79th and 8oth General Assemblies of Ohio, for the benefit of all who choose to use the book for reference. The volume complete is intended to give, besides actual history, a pen picture of the men who are engaged in the State service, for the benefit of the boys of Ohio who are attending the high schools and colleges, and there is no more interesting study for the growing boy, who may himself, in turn, become engaged in the public service. The people of Ohio get the full benefit of this work, be that little or much, as it is to be distributed only to the public and school libraries of the State. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Ohio: The Rise and Progress of an American State This marvelous development was not due to the mere accretion of growth resulting from time, but it was the direct work of the men who met and solved the prob lems of the period in which they lived. No better blood was ever given to found a State than that of the pioneers of Ohio; strong and healthy strains of other lands have since entered into its life. Such a people cannot fail to have an interesting career, and in these pages is recorded their history. If, as Bacon says, history makes men wise, it is be cause he who writes it deducts lessons from the past. So, remembering that history is philosophy teaching by example, I have not been content wholly with making this volume a mere chronological table or a skeleton of facts, but have at times undertaken by deduction, criticism or otherwise, to give the reader a text for the thoughtful consideration of the lessons that can be derived from the past.
