Book Synopsis Studies in the Fourth Gospel by : Leon Morris
Download or read book Studies in the Fourth Gospel written by Leon Morris and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-06-01 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These in-depth studies on the Gospel of John, written by the man who describes himself as a 'conservative evangelical,' demonstrate that the application of the critical method to an understanding of scripture need not rule out an acceptance of inspiration. Dr. Morris is here concerned with the authorship of the fourth Gospel, its relation to the Synoptists, the origin and date of writing, and with other similar issues. To his discussion of these issues he brings both his impressive scholarship and firm commitment to the revelatory nature of the Bible. The result is an informed and articulate statement of the conservative position on the many crucial questions raised by John's Gospel. In his Preface to this volume, Dr. Morris notes that Critical Protestant scholars and Roman Catholics are reading one another's works and discussing one another's writings with charity and mutual profit. Perhaps it is not too much to hope that both will include the conservative evangelicals within the scope of their reading and charity. In the hope that it will make some small contribution to the continuing dialogue this book goes forth.

Download or read book The Gospels written by Vincent Taylor and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-05-20 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the subtitle indicates, this book is not intended to be anything more than a brief introduction to the four gospels. It treats questions of sources, date and authorship, and the mutual relations of one Gospel to another. It does not attempt to discuss the deepest and most beautiful things in the Gospels, but rather those questions about which we must form opinions if we are to read these unique works with insight and understanding. This edition has been carefully revised, and notes and references have been added relating to the Q, the Proto-Luke, and Bussmann's Hypotheses, the authorship of 1 John, and the critical problems connected with the Fourth Gospel; and it should be of service to students and to the growing number of readers who are keenly interested in the question of Gospel Origins.

Book Synopsis Is John's Gospel True? by : Maurice Casey
Download or read book Is John's Gospel True? written by Maurice Casey and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study demonstrates that the Gospel attributed to John gives an inaccurate account of the life and teaching of Jesus. It shows that this Gospel was finished during a fierce conflict between the Johannine community and the Jewish community. During this conflict, the Johannine community hailed Jesus as God, and declared that the Jews were children of the devil. They attributed their beliefs to Jesus, and portrayed him as quarrelling with the Jews as they did. Consequently, this document is fiercely anti-Jewish and has been used to fuel anti-semitism - reasons for the author to challenge the fitness of John's Gospel to be in anyone's sacred scriptures.
Book Synopsis Fourth Gospel in Recent Criticism and Interpretation, 4th edition by : Wilbert Francis Howard
Download or read book Fourth Gospel in Recent Criticism and Interpretation, 4th edition written by Wilbert Francis Howard and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-05-08 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wilbert Howard was a noted expositor of the Fourth Gospel, and in this book he proved a sure guide for students and general readers through the mazes of historical and internal criticism as these affected the interpretation of this Gospel. His untimely passing robbed the Biblical world of a sure expositor and careful investigator. C. K. Barrett added sections of his own to take proper account of following work, through 1961, on the problem of the Fourth Gospel.
Book Synopsis The Priority of John by : John A. T. Robinson
Download or read book The Priority of John written by John A. T. Robinson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-03-01 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been the fate of many books on John to be left unfinished, for its interpretation naturally forms the crowning of a lifetime. I have myself been intending to write a book on the Fourth Gospel since the 'fifties, before I broke off (reluctantly) to be Bishop of Woolwich, though I am grateful now that I did not produce it prematurely at that time. It means however that I shall be compelled to refer to and often recapitulate material directly or indirectly related to the Johannine literature, which I have written over the years (some of it indeed while I was bishop). Many scholars in fact, if not most now, think that the author of the Gospel himself never lived to finish it and have seen the work as the product of numerous hands and redactors. As will become clear, I prefer to believe that the ancient testimony of the church is correct that John wrote it 'while still in the body' and that its roughnesses, self-corrections and failures of connection, real or imagined, are the result of its not having been smoothly or finally edited. If so I am in good company. At any rate who could wish for a better last testimony from his friends than that 'his witness is true' (John 21.24)? In other words, he got it right--historically and theologically. --from the Introduction At the time of his death in December 1983, John Robinson had completed the text of the book on which his 1984 Bampton lectures were to be based, so that it is possible to see the full details of his extremely controversial argument that the Gospel of John was the first Gospel to be written. Dr. Robinson himself once described the dawning of his conviction that this was the case as a 'Damascus Road experience', and his presentation of the evidence is made with all the customary vigor with which he would argue for something in which he deeply believed. The objections which need to be overcome to stand on its head what has long been one of the fundamental assumptions of New Testament scholarship are substantial, but here once again Dr. Robinson shows that so much of what is taken as established fact in that area is no more than preference and presumption. Certainly he will provoke rethinking on a whole series of topics, from the chronology of Jesus' ministry to the nature of his teaching. As The Listener said of the equally controversial Redating the New Testament: The greatest pleasure Dr. Robinson gives is purely intellectual. His book is a prodigious virtuoso exercise in inductive reasoning and an object lesson in the nature of historical argument and historical knowledge. This sequel equals, if not excels, its predecessor in those respects and is a fitting tribute to a brilliant New Testament scholar. The manuscript was prepared for publication by Dr. Chip Coakley, Dr Robinson's pupil, now Lecturer in Religious Studies in the University of Lancaster.

Book Synopsis John, His Gospel, and Jesus by : Stanley E. Porter
Download or read book John, His Gospel, and Jesus written by Stanley E. Porter and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2015 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume Stanley Porter tackles a wide variety of important and often highly contentious topics within John's Gospel as a means of defining and capturing the distinctive Johannine voice. Topics discussed include John's Gospel in relation to competing Gospels, the public proclamation of Jesus in John, the sources of John's Gospel, John's prologue, the "I Am" sayings, the notion of truth, the Passover theme, and the ending of John's Gospel. Each chapter, besides surveying representative research, puts forward new and insightful proposals regarding the topics concerned. Porter does not shy away from topics that have often perplexed Johannine scholars, and he confronts some of the viewpoints that have led to confusion in the field. Significantly, each chapter considers the Johannine voice as it represents, presents, and treats Jesus, grounding the book in the wider field of Gospel and New Testament investigation.

Download or read book John written by Merrill C. Tenney and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1948, this now-classic study by Merrill Tenney treats the Gospel of John as a literary unit and provides a straightforward analysis of the text. Tenney first outlines the structure of the Gospel, then offers a careful exposition of John’s text according to six major periods of Christ’s life, and finally presents a topical analysis of the Gospel. Not a critical commentary but, rather, a well-organized guidebook complemented by helpful charts and diagrams, Tenney’s John: The Gospel of Belief, reissued in this new format, will continue helping pastors, teachers, students, and other Bible readers grasp the aim and major themes of John.
