Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel Problems and Their Solution: Being an Inquiry Into the Origin of the Four Gospels I was in the first instance led to write on the subject dealt with in this book by a sentence or two in an article by Professor J. T. Marshall in the Critical Review for July, 1892. Ever since I was a boy I had had, in common with all who have devoted much attention to the critical study of the Bible, a keen desire to know in what manner the four Gospels had come into existence. I had long felt that all current theories were inadequate; and I had, moreover, a vague impression that at least some portions of the Gospel narratives were written contemporaneously with the events they record. Several years ago this impression was strengthened by a statement which I read somewhere that the art of writing shorthand was practised in the times of the New Testament. But the impression took no definite shape, and I continued to be puzzled by those features of the Gospels which throughout this century have been a leading subject of discussion in the learned world. It was not until I read, soon after its appearance, the article above referred to, that I found the first clue to the solution of the Problems. Hill presents evidence for how and why, despite the numerous Gospels that appeared in the earliest Christian centuries, four (and only four) Gospels came to be embraced by the Protestant, Roman Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox churches alike.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Horae Evangelicae: Or, the International Evidence of the Gospel History; Being an Inquiry Into the Structure and Origin of the Four Gospels, Their Historical Consistency, and the Characteristic Design of Each Narrative Such a view of the gospels, to be tenable for a moment, implies that their composition must be referred to a date very considera bly removed from the events they profess to record. And hence it is maintained, by the patrons of this new theory, that they were not written until the fall of Jerusalem, or even the close of the first century, and that an interval of sixty or seventy years from the crucifixion is enough to account for the rise of such legends, and their reduction into that definite shape in which the history now appears. An hypothesis of this extreme kind, however it may startle by its novelty, or dazzle by its boldness, is too unnatural to last. In our own country at least, there is too much instinctive com mon sense to offer any favourable soil for its propagation. Yet the shew of learning and philosophy, in its chief advocates, may give them, among ourselves, some power to deceive. Even those who reject the theory, as a whole, may not entirely escape its poisonous influence. Admissions respecting errors and in consistency in the gospels, which abound in the replies of foreign critics to the mythical theory, are perhaps only one degree less dangerous than the system they are used to over throw. Some of the premises, on which the infidel scheme of explanation pretends to be founded, are received by many of its opponents in Germany as the certain results of critical inquiry. And no doubt, even if the gospels were as imperfect as these writers maintain, the substantial truth of the history would still be clear, and the essentials of Christianity might remain unim paired. But a closer search will prove how questionable are the claims of this negative criticism. The very parties who reject the plenary inspiration of the gospels, and charge them with anachronism, error, and contradiction, differ in their judgment on almost every particular question on which these charges are founded, and betray continually a looseness of conjecture, and a rashness of hasty inference, which may well destroy all faith in their most confident decisions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was the Gospel of Mark Written First? Were the Gospel Writers Plagiarists? What is the Q Document? What about Document Q? Critical Bible scholars have assumed that Matthew and Luke used the book of Mark to compile their Gospels and that they consulted to supplementary source, to document the scholars call Q from the German Quelle, or source. From the close of the first century AD to the 18th century, the reliability of the Gospels was never really brought into question. However, once we have called the period of enlightenment, especially from the 19th century onward, some critical Bible scholars viewed the Gospels not as the inspired, inerrant Word of God but rather as the word of man, and a jumbled word at that . In addition, they determined that the Gospels were not written by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, saying the Gospels were written after the apostles, denying that the writers of the Gospels had any firsthand knowledge of Jesus; Therefore, for these Bible critics such men were unable to offer a record of reliable history. Moreover, these critical Bible scholars came to the conclusion that the similarities in structure and content in the synoptic (similar view) Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke), suggests that the evangelists copied extensively from one other. Further, the critical Bible scholars have rejected that the miracles of Jesus and his resurrection have occurred as recorded in the Gospels. Lastly, some have even gone so far as to reject the historicity of Jesus himself.
