Book Synopsis The Gospel According to Malfew Seklew: And Other Writings by and about Sirfessor Wilkesbarre by : Fred Wilkes
Download or read book The Gospel According to Malfew Seklew: And Other Writings by and about Sirfessor Wilkesbarre written by Fred Wilkes and published by . This book was released on 2014-07-28 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is only one Malfew Seklew and Sirfessor Wilkesbarre is His Prophet. The polemical writings by and about Sirfessor Wilkesbarre: a Chicago Radical, Social Aristocrat and Egoist Superman of the early 20th Century. Companion of Ragnar Redbeard, frequenter of the Dil Pickle Club, and a man too magnificent for one moniker. Fred Wilkes (1864 - 1930) traversed in the mind through Socialism into a Sardonic Nietzschean Egoism as he made his way in the flesh from England to Chicago and New York. Founder of the Society of Social Aristocrats, selling Salvation to All and One through pamphlets, radio presentations and soap-box lectures on Love, Laughter, Wit and Wisdom. With an introduction by Trevor Blake, author of Confessions of a Failed Egoist, gathering never before published biographical details of Wilkesbarre and the radical milieu he circulated in. Fortified by fancies from his time as Associate Editor of the egoist journal The Eagle and The Serpent, pamphlets co-written with the infamous author of Might Is Right, and selections from Hobohemian Chicago newspaper The Day Book. In addition, the editors have produced over 250 elucidating footnotes and gathered a number of illustrations judiciously arranged throughout the book. As Seklew himself says: "Are you a Simpoleon or a Supercrat? A Peter-pantheist or a Personality? Are you a Bromide or a Sulphide? A nonentity or a reality? Are you an unripe ego or an unfinished organism with underdone understanding and hard boiled beliefs, pingpong principles and petrified prejudices? Do you amble through the atmosphere with the courage of a carrot, the consciousness of a cabbage, the turpitude of a turnip, the pep of a prune, the punch of a parsnip and the psychology of a Sundowner in the swamps of Hobohemia, or do you dash through space with the courage of a Conqueror and the wisdom of a Will-to-Power Man? If not, massage your Mentoids, and be saved--from yourself at your worst."
Download or read book Joe Hill written by Franklin Rosemont and published by PM Press. This book was released on 2015-12-18 with total page 916 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A monumental work, expansive in scope, covering the life, times, and culture of that most famous of the Wobblies—songwriter, poet, hobo, thinker, humorist, martyr—Joe Hill. It is a journey into the Wobbly culture that made Hill and the capitalist culture that killed him. Many aspects of the life and lore of Joe Hill receive their first and only discussion in IWW historian Franklin Rosemont’s opus. In great detail, the issues that Joe Hill raised and grappled with in his life: capitalism, white supremacy, gender, religion, wilderness, law, prison, and industrial unionism are shown in both the context of Hill’s life and for their enduring relevance in the century since his death. Collected too is Joe Hill’s art, plus scores of other images featuring Hill-inspired art by IWW illustrators from Ralph Chaplin to Carlos Cortez, as well as contributions from many other labor artists. As Rosemont suggests in this remarkable book, Joe Hill never really died. He lives in the minds of young (and old) rebels as long as his songs are sung, his ideas are circulated, and his political descendants keep fighting for a better day.
Book Synopsis The Rise & Fall of the Dil Pickle by : Franklin Rosemont
Download or read book The Rise & Fall of the Dil Pickle written by Franklin Rosemont and published by Charles Kerr. This book was released on 2004 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do Lucy Parsons, Clarence Darrow, Carl Sandburg, Mary MacLane, Lawrence Lipton, Elizabeth Davis (Queen of the Hoboes), Jun Fujita, Sherwood Anderson, Ralph Chaplin, Katherine Dunham, Djuna Barnes, Kenneth Rexroth, Sam Dolgoff, and Slim Brundage have in common? They were all Dil Picklers! Founded in 1914 by former Wobbly Jack Jones, Irish revolutionist Jim Larkin, and a group of fantastic IWW-oriented Bughouse Square hobos and soapboxers, the Dil Pickle in just a few years was widely recognized as the wildest, most playful, most creative, and most radical nightspot in the known universe - especially after Dr. Ben Reitman joined the club in 1917. In this book, Rosemont has collected forty-one reminiscences of the Dil Pickle by poets, artists, journalists, novelists, hobos, scholars, anarchist, wobblies, and other assorted radicals and oddballs. Among them are accounts by the club's founders, habitues, visitors, and critics. Rosemont's introduction provides the fullest account so far of the Dil Pickle's chaotic history, and goes on to explore the role of the Picklers in the arts and the 'Chicago Renaissance', along with its meaning(s) for our own troubled times.

Book Synopsis Christ as a Social Reformer & Writings in Red by : Arthur Desmond
Download or read book Christ as a Social Reformer & Writings in Red written by Arthur Desmond and published by Ragnar Redbeard. This book was released on 2020-03-26 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stunning articles about the labor movement, unpublished poetry, and historic Maori translations. Caricature depictions accompanied by writings which caused its author to be accused of plagiarism. In June 1890 Arthur Desmond got his article "Christ as a Social Reformer," published in "Zealandia," a Dunedin magazine. The article quickly became popular and in October he arranged for it to be printed as a pamphlet by Mr. Arthur Cleave, of Vulcan lane. Presented here for the first time since then is Arthur Desmond's accused article followed by Mr. Van Deusen's article "Ecclesiastical Christianity versus Jesus." "Writings in Red" is a collection of Desmond's writings, poetry, and correspondence. All his published works in Zealandia. His Union and strike articles. Critiques and controversy between the years 1889-1891. "The author treats the subject in a style that is new to many in this city. He looks upon Christ as a great Hebrew Reformer, who was murdered because he upheld and defended the cause of the poor. The Tribune recommends this pamphlet to its readers." -The Tribune From the Contents: The King That Is To Come The Starving Poor Of Old England Shearing The Shareholders Political Manifesto Of United Labour Who Pays For All? New Zealander Arthur Desmond, (1859-1929) was a poet, author, unionist, and agitator. He was an unconventional and radical political activist who fought hard for the worker's rights. Nowadays he is probably most famous for having written the infamous 1896 book MIGHT IS RIGHT-his Social Darwinist Thundering Opus under the pseudonym Ragnar Redbeard.
