Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in 1939, in Edmonton, Alberta, Larry Erickson loved the natural world, and it became his classroom. Mother Nature was his teacher. As soon as he could, Larry bought a trapline about 150 miles north of Fort St. James, BC, near Manson Creek in the Omineca Country where, surrounded by nature, he has lived with his dogs and horses. After a few years as a trapper and tree faller, he was able to purchase a guiding territory and start his own guide outfitting business called Alpine Outfitters, which he owned until 2021. There, in his old log cabin at 20-Mile, beneath Caribou Mountain, he lived with his dogs and, at times, over fifty horses. It was from that location that, with the help of employees and loved ones, Larry took clients on packing and hunting expeditions. In For I Have Seen the Golden Ram, Larry shares his remarkable stories of travelling by dog sled and camping in temperatures of forty below or colder while trapping, and he tells of taking clients on trips into the far reaches of Northern B.C. with a packtrain of horses. Larry shares his knowledge of the wonders of nature, much of which was untouched by man. The knowledge he gained from living in the wilderness, honed his philosophy of life in this quickly changing world. There remain very few people who have lived a life such as Larry’s and are still alive to tell their story; those who used dog teams, not snowmobiles, horses, not ATVs, and who lived off the land, only taking what they needed—those few people who have “seen the Golden Ram.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Argonautica is the dramatic story of Jason's quest for the Golden Fleece and his relations with the dangerous princess Medea. The only surviving Greek epic to bridge the gap between Homer and late antiquity, this epic poem is the crowning literary achievement of the Ptolemaic court at Alexandria, written by Appolonius of Rhodes in the third century BC. Appollonius explores many of the fundamental aspects of life in a highly original way: love, deceit, heroism, human ignorance of the divine, and the limits of science, and offers a gripping and sometimes disturbing tale in the process. This major new prose translation combines readability with accuracy and an attention to detail that will appeal to general readers and classicists alike.

Book excerpt: The author of I, Claudius puts his own twist on the myth of the Argonauts’ quest for the Golden Fleece: “A tour de force . . . A richly tapestried epic” (Kirkus Reviews). An inventive reimagining of the story of Jason and the Argonauts, this novel by renowned poet and classicist Robert Graves brings heroic figures of Hellenistic myth to life. Graves’s Jason is belligerent, energetic, and full of life, and the society Graves builds for him is outlandish and deeply invested in ancient cults. Against this primitive, religious backdrop, the charismatic Jason assembles a crew and sets out to retrieve the sacred gold-trimmed fleece that is sacred to Zeus, and that has been stolen by worshippers of the Triple Goddess. Accompanying him is Hercules, a brave warrior known more for his brawn, and his astonishingly good luck, than his brains. Robert Graves builds a compelling world that sets Hellenistic magic and mystery in a surprisingly gritty, realistic setting, a fascinating read for fans of Greek mythology. “A witty historical novel with much insider’s lore on cult and ritual.” —The New York Review of Books “Richly readable, thoroughly classical yet individually interpreted, this is a labor of love important to students, culture-seekers and readers.” —Library Journal

Book excerpt: The story of Jason and the Argonauts is one of the most famous in Greek myth, and its development from the oldest layers of Greek mythology down to the modern age encapsulates the dramatic changes in faith, power and culture that Western civilization has seen over the past three millennia. From the Bronze Age to the Classical Age, from the medieval world to today, the Jason story has been told and retold with new stories, details and meanings. This book explores the epic history of a colorful myth and probes the most ancient origins of the quest for the Golden Fleece--a quest that takes us to the very dawn of Greek religion and its close relationship with Near Eastern peoples and cultures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Along with I, Claudius, The Golden Fleece is considered one of Robert Graves's most exciting and transporting historical novels. The Golden Fleece was at one time the most sacred religious object of the ancient Greeks, and had been sent away as the result of a power struggle between the Greeks and earlier inhabitants of the Greek peninsula. In this the original quest narrative, Jason leads a voyage of heroes, including his friend Hercules and many others, in his ship the Argo, to recapture the sacred Golden Fleece and bring it home. To do so he must travel across the whole of the ancient world, perform impossible tasks, and undergo betrayals and tragedies beyond comprehension or human endurance. Poet, translator, memoirist, novelist, classicist Robert Graves stands alone for his ability to bring to modern readers the great stories of the ancient world with all their vividness and gore and power intact. As he has shown in many of his 140 published works, his facility with ancient myths and his understanding of how they still inform our imaginative lives helps make The Golden Fleece feel as fresh and necessary today as it did the first time someone told the story of Jason and the Argonauts some three thousand years ago. Seven Stories' Robert Graves Project spans 14 titles, and includes fiction and nonfiction, adult, young adult and children's books, in a striking new uniform design, with new introductions and afterwords. Among the works still to come are Count Belisarius, Hebrew Myths, and Lawrence and the Arabs. The online partner for the Robert Graves Project is RosettaBooks.
