Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Mahmutefendi has cheered us up with his texts, which were conceived as novels but never completed, as well as with dialogues, tricks, and situations that have ended up as a burr to some prose. Some will recognize in them tinges of Gogol, or perhaps Kharms, Domanovi, or even Nui, as well as works like childrens memory books, anonymous letters, secret diaries, and various fun and boring newspapers. All these bits and pieces constantly intertwine, swarm, and burst, creating one artistic world, the world of Sead Mahmutefendi, a wizard with the terrible power of imagination, a wizard who, from scattered nonsensicalities, creates an astonishing sense of existence. His most significant works are the novels Kelvins Zero, Fish and One-Eyed Jack, The Centrifugal Citizens, Teasing of Salko Pirija, Demons, Like in a Movie, and Placebo: The Beauty and Horror of Lies, as well as the books of columns and essays, A Memorandum for the Reconquista and The Big and Small Cannibals. Sead Mahmutefendis books have been translated into English, Russian, French, Italian, Macedonian, Armenian, and Danish.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly, recent scholarship has focused on those married women and mothers in the Middle Ages who achieved holiness. The Merovingian Waldetrudis and Rictrudis; Ida, mother of the crusader king Godfrey of Bouillon; Elisabeth of Hungary and Bridget of Sweden are among them. Unlike Mary and her mother, Saint Anne (mother saints, whose sanctity was based on motherhood) these female parents were honored despite rather than because of their children. They were holy mothers, whose status as spouses and mothers gave them a public voice and opened for them the road to sanctification. They successfully combined marriage and motherhood with a religious life and functioned as holy women in their community. Despite increasing respect, tension between the roles of saint and wife persisted. Saintly women were not expected to be happily married: the ancient prejudice against sexual passion and physical ease mitigated the enjoyment of married life. The book's original essays focus on Northern Europe, where the cult of Saint Anne reached its climax around 1500. It does not explore Church doctrine and theology, as other studies do, but examines the religious experience of historical holy mothers and saints and how these women were perceived by their communities and their biographers.

Book excerpt: This volume examines gender-specific religious practices and contends that the pursuit of holiness can destabilize binary gender itself. Though saints may be classified as masculine or feminine, holiness may also cut across gender divisions and demand a break from normally gendered behaviour.

Book excerpt: This bibliographic listing of works in English by and about members of the Order of Friars Preachers actually begins with a translation of the confirmation of the Dominican Order by Pope Honorius III on December 22, 1216. Works and lives of great Dominicans such as Saints Dominic, Catherine of Siena, Thomas Aquinas, Albert the Great, Pope Pius V, and Martin de Porres are listed. Prominent personages such as Fra Angelico, Savonarola, Bartolommeo de las Casas, Samuel Mazzuchelli, Dominic Pire (Nobel Prize recipient), and M. J. La Grange (founder of the Ecole Biblique) also appear in this work. The Dominicans founded colleges and universities around the globe, and their scholarly, historical, and artistic works have illumined the world for almost eight hundred years. This bibliography is an invaluable resource for scholars and researchers covering a wide range of topics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Rose of Lima (Isabel Flores y Oliva, 1586-1617) was canonized in 1671 as the first saint of the New World and Patron of the Americas. In this engrossing new biography, Frank Graziano offers the most comprehensive examination of the life of Rose to appear in any language. An obscure, self-mortifying mystic, Rose seems a strange choice for the distinction of first American saint. Graziano argues that the cult that grew up around St. Rose during her life and greatly expanded after her death was seen by both Church and State as a challenge and even a threat to authority. For that reason, he contends, the Church acted quickly to render her harmless by "bringing her into the fold." Graziano goes on to consider Rose's ascetic Christianity in its cultural context. He seeks to discover why the severe austerities and mortifications of female piety that today are regarded as psychopathological were lauded as exemplary means of worship in the seventeenth century. In fact, he shows, St.; Rose's behavior and experiences were initially regarded as pathological by many significant observers within her own culture, but such assessments were gradually dismissed as her saintly image was constructed. Drawing on key archival sources and the insights offered by psychoanalytic theory, Graziano constructs a compelling portrait of one of the Catholic Church's most beloved saints

Astell demonstrates how the historical transformation of hagiography as a genre correlates with similar changes in biblical studies. Christian hagiography flourished from the fourth to the fifteenth centuries, illuminating the gospel through the overlapping forms of exempla and vita. Originally, the Lives of the saints were understood as hermeneutical extensions of the Bible—God authors the saint, just as God authors the divinely inspired scriptures. During the medieval period, a sense of dual authorship between God and the cooperating saint developed, paralleling the Scholastic impulse to assign greater agency to the human writers of scripture. Then, in the sixteenth century, powerful new anxieties about historical truth pushed hagiography aside for biography, its successor. Drawing on her expertise in the history of Christianity and biblical exegesis, Astell convincingly shows how this radical shift in hagiography’s status—the loss of the literal, allegorical, tropological, and anagogical senses of the Lives—serves as a bellwether for modern biblical reception.

Book excerpt: Kentish folklore reflects the curious geography and administrative history of Kent, with its extensive coastline and strong regional differences, which are reflected in distinctive cultural traditions. Bounded by sea on three sides, Kent has the longest coastline of any English county and was the base for much maritime activity, giving rise to communities rich in sea-lore. Fran and Geoff Doel explore the folklore, legends, customs and songs of Kent and the causative factors behind them. From saints to smugglers, hop-pickers to hoodeners, mummers to May garlands and wife sales to witchcraft, this book charts the traditional culture of a populous and culturally significant southern county.
