Book Synopsis Knights of the Golden Circle by : David C. Keehn
Download or read book Knights of the Golden Circle written by David C. Keehn and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on years of exhaustive and meticulous research, David C. Keehn's study provides the first comprehensive analysis of the Knights of the Golden Circle, a secret southern society that initially sought to establish a slave-holding empire in the "Golden Circle" region of Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America. Keehn reveals the origins, rituals, structure, and complex history of this mysterious group, including its later involvement in the secession movement. Members supported southern governors in precipitating disunion, filled the ranks of the nascent Confederate Army, and organized rearguard actions during the Civil War. The Knights of the Golden Circle emerged around 1858 when a secret society formed by a Cincinnati businessman merged with the pro-expansionist Order of the Lone Star, which already had 15,000 members. The following year, the Knights began publishing their own newspaper and established their headquarters in Washington, D. C. In 1860, during their first attempt to create the Golden Circle, several thousand Knights assembled in southern Texas to "colonize" northern Mexico. Due to insufficient resources and organizational shortfalls, however, that filibuster failed. Later, the Knights shifted their focus and began pushing for disunion, spearheading pro-secession rallies, and intimidating Unionists in the South. They appointed regional military commanders from the ranks of the South's major political and military figures, including men such as Elkanah Greer of Texas, Paul J. Semmes of Georgia, Robert C. Tyler of Maryland, and Virginius D. Groner of Virginia. Followers also established allies with the South's rabidly pro-secession "fire-eaters," which included individuals such as Barnwell Rhett, Louis Wigfall, Henry Wise, and William Yancey. According to Keehn, the Knights likely carried out a variety of other clandestine actions before the Civil War, including attempts by insurgents to take over federal forts in Virginia and North Carolina, the activation of pro-southern militia around Washington, D. C. and a planned assassination of Abraham Lincoln as he passed through Baltimore in early 1861 on the way to his inauguration. Once the fighting began, the Knights helped build the emerging Confederate Army and assisted with the pro-Confederate Copperhead movement in northern states. With the war all but lost, various Knights supported one of their members, John Wilkes Booth, in his plot to abduct and assassinate President Lincoln. Keehn's fast-paced, engaging narrative demonstrates that the Knights proved more substantial than historians have traditionally assumed and provides a new perspective on southern secession and the outbreak of the Civil War.

Through his travels he is introduced to new family members and friends, which teach him important lessons on character and friendship. Along the path to glory, Holcombe also encounters enemies and decisions that seem equally difficult to battle; but with perseverance, consideration and will-- they are challenged and won with all the glory and vigor of sword fighting, hand battle and bloodshed expected from centuries ago. Written in the setting of medieval times, the author writes with ease and explains lessons to the reader along the way that transcend time and can be applied to modern day living. The Path of Truth & Courage has taken on a life of its own as a tale for children of all ages to read and enjoy through the eyes of a Knight in training. But the book does not stop there; adults can easily translate the lessons that are given in italicized portions of the book as a plan to overcome daily obstacles at work and in life. J. Arthur Holcombe is often humbled by the steps that readers have taken to utilize his methods. In the words of young and old, The Path of Truth & Courage entertains the reader while carefully teaching that love for a goal and love for friends and family cannot be compromised. Clearly, this novel will continue to follow in the legendary steps of its main character Sir John Holcombe, Knight Crusader and Benevolent Lord of Dorchester. The first novel written by J. Arthur Holcombe has landed on nationwide bookstore shelves to overwhelming positive reviews from critics and readers from around the globe.
Book Synopsis The Politics of Southern Pastoral Literature, 1785–1885 by : Peter Templeton
Download or read book The Politics of Southern Pastoral Literature, 1785–1885 written by Peter Templeton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-26 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Politics of Southern Pastoral Literature, 1785–1885: Jeffersonian Afterlives, Peter Templeton presents a wide-ranging and systematic evaluation of pastoral in the nineteenth-century Southern novel, offering an explicit appraisal of the philosophical and political rationale of pastoral literature alongside the existing body of research into the image of Jefferson following his death. Rather than assuming a homogeneous South, Templeton locates Southern pastoral in its specific political context, offering readings of significant factors such as the literary representation of landscape, of class and the yeoman ideal, and the institution of slavery and its intellectual underpinnings. Focusing on a six key Southern authors, both canonical and relatively understudied, the book charts key transformations in the politics of pastoral literature in the period, and noteworthy reconfigurations in the representation of Jefferson and his philosophies, in order to analyze what these signified to nineteenth-century Americans. In doing so, the text also demonstrates how ideologies react to the stresses imposed on them by political realities.
