Book excerpt: Many scholars today believe that early Greek literature, as represented by the great poems of Homer and Hesiod, was to some extent inspired by texts from the neighbouring civilizations of the ancient Near East, especially Mesopotamia. It is true that, in the case of religious poetry, early Greek poets sang about their gods in ways that resemble those of Sumerian or Akkadian hymns from Mesopotamia, but does this mean that the latter influenced the former, and if so, how? This volume is the first to attempt an answer to these questions by undertaking a detailed study of the ancient texts in their original languages, from Sumerian poetry in the 20th century BC to Greek sources from the times of Homer, Hesiod, Pindar, and Aeschylus. The Gods Rich in Praise presents the core groups of sources from the ancient Near East, describing the main features of style and content of Sumerian and Akkadian religious poetry, and showing how certain compositions were translated and adapted beyond Mesopotamia. It proceeds by comparing selected elements of form and content: hymnic openings, negative predication, the birth of Aphrodite in the Theogony of Hesiod, and the origins and development of a phrase in Hittite prayers and the Iliad of Homer. The volume concludes that, in terms of form and style, early Greek religious poetry was probably not indebted to ancient Near Eastern models, but also argues that such influence may nevertheless be perceived in certain closely defined instances, particularly where supplementary evidence from other ancient sources is available, and where the extant sources permit a reconstruction of the process of translation and adaptation.

Helen Bolton as she encourages everyone to strengthen his or her spiritual journey and live Gods way in this one of a kind book. Let these praises inspire you. Book Review> My friend Helen Bolton, who was a Port Arthur ISD teacher for three decades before retiring and moving to Brady, has written a book that is truly A Decade of Praise. Filled prolifically with her daily thoughts and prayers expressed in simple rhyme schemes, A Decade of Praise presents all the situations in which we find ourselves and reveals how one can face them squarely with the help and asked-for presence of God. She writes graphically about both the highs and lows of life, constantly praising God for the help she finds in meditation, prayer and scripture. Her words serve as a spiritual guide that will help us see ourselves and evaluate the path we are taking toward a meaningful and purposeful life. Each of her hundreds of prayers is referenced with verses from the Bible, ranging from The Potter and the Clay, (Isaiah 64:8) to The Darkest Night (John 17:11), and everything in-between. A favorite of this writer is Heal Our Land, based on 2 Chronicles 7:14. Helen taught students from fifth grade through college in settings as diverse as American schools overseas to Texas youth correctional facilities during her long teaching career. She published 10 collections of poetry and designed greeting cards. A Decade of Praise is published by Xlibris, and is available from Xlibris, amazon.com, and Barnes and Noble. --By Janet Cline

Book excerpt: The first in a series of volumes publishing the Sumerian literary texts in the Schøyen Collection, this book makes available, for the first time, editions of seventeen cuneiform tablets, dating to ca. 2000 BCE and containing works of Sumerian religious poetry. Edited, translated, and annotated by Christopher Metcalf, these poems shed light on the interaction between cult, scholarship, and scribal culture in Mesopotamia in the early second millennium BCE. The present volume contains fourteen songs composed in praise of the various gods of the Mesopotamian pantheon; it is believed that these songs were typically performed in temple cults. Among them are a song in praise of Sud, goddess of the ancient Mesopotamian city Shuruppak; a song describing the statue of the protective goddess Lamma-saga in the “Sacred City” temple complex at Girsu; and a previously unknown hymn dedicated to the creator god Enki. Each text is provided in transliteration and translation and accompanied by hand-copies and images of the tablets themselves. Expertly contextualizing each song in Babylonian religious and literary history, this thoroughly competent editio princeps will prove a valuable tool for scholars interested in the literary and religious traditions of ancient Mesopotamia.

Younger readers may work on the few puzzles, and parents explain the contents of the reading portion to them; b) All subject areas are from the Book of Psalms with each title and write-up chosen to show the relevance of God’s Word to a reader’s life; c) It is life-based, family-friendly, and totally inter-denominational, avoiding areas of doctrinal controversies; d) These Psalms passages, and associated titles, cover a wide variety of human behavior, activities and relationships; they demonstrate God’s continuing intervention in the affairs of humankind, even as individuals. The Psalms is a book of songs with rich and deep meaning, meeting every positive and negative experience in our lives. The short articles show us how truth from the Psalms can help us praise God in all circumstances.

True life for the follower of Jesus really is a moment-by-moment trust that God is dependable and fulfills his promises. This is living by faith in future grace, which provides God's mercy, provision, and wisdom—everything we need—to accomplish his good plans for us. Ultimate joy, peace, and hope in life and death are found in a confident, continual awareness of the reality of future grace.
