Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The church in Africa is thriving, both numerically and in its boldness and fervour. Yet the challenge of African folk Christianity – a Christianity shaped more by traditional beliefs than the Bible – continues to loom large, and there remains an acute need for life and faith to be biblically informed. In this introduction to biblical theology, Prof. Peter Nyende draws from nearly two decades of experience teaching the next generation of African church leaders. Maintaining the vital importance of a holistic understanding of Scripture and its unified nature, he presents the central story of both Old and New Testaments as the restoration of God’s dwelling and kingdom in the world. He traces this narrative through its many stages of development — creation and fall, God’s covenants with Israel, exile — to its ultimate fulfilment in Jesus, the church and the new Jerusalem. Though written with pastors and theological students in mind, this book is accessible to any who desire to increase their biblical literacy and partner more fully with the work of God and his kingdom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a special combined issue (July/August 2005) of The Ministry. It contains a complete record of the messages given in Anaheim, California, during the 2005 Summer Training on the Crystallization-study of 1 and 2 Thessalonians and Song of Songs 7--8. Ten messages were given on 1 and 2 Thessalonians and two messages were given on Song of Songs 7--8. The relationship between these books is remarkable: At an intrinsic level, the crystals in Song of Songs 7--8 interface beautifully with those in 1 and 2 Thessalonians. In Song of Songs 7 we see the type of the deified lover of the Lord becoming His co-worker, working with Him for His Body. This matches what is revealed in 1 Thessalonians concerning Paul and the brothers as patterns [1:5]...Song of Songs 8 expresses in type the longing of the lover of the Lord to be raptured, hoping to be transfigured and praying for the Lord to make haste to come. This matches, in spirit, what is revealed particularly in 1 Thessalonians, which ends every chapter with the mention of the Lord's coming back (1:10; 2:19; 3:13; 4:15-17; 5:23). The crucial truth and burden embodied in these twelve messages may be summarized in two sets of statements. The first set of four statements concerns the books of 1 and 2 Thessalonians: (1) we need to see a vision of the church in God the Father with His life and nature and in the Lord Jesus Christ with all He is and has done; (2) faith as the nature and strength of the work, love as the motivation for and characteristic of labor, and hope as the source of endurance are the structure of a holy life for the church life; (3) to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls us into His kingdom and glory, is to live God and express God in our daily living by walking according to the mingled spirit; and (4) in order to live a holy life for the church life, we need to cooperate with God's operation to establish our heart blameless in holiness and to sanctify us wholly, with our spirit, soul, and body preserved complete. The second set of two statements concerns Song of Songs 7--8: (1) as we become the same as Christ in life, nature, expression, and function, we are qualified to work with Him for His Body; (2) as we trust in the Lord helplessly, depend on Him as our love and strength, and listen to His speaking, our hope is to be raptured through the redemption of our body, and our prayer is--"Come, Lord Jesus!" We include reports concerning the Lord's move in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary, and concerning the need for a property in London. The Announcements section contains dates and locations for upcoming Living Stream Ministry trainings and conferences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This detailed and comprehensive commentary by L. Michael Morales sheds fresh light on a part of the Bible often referenced yet rarely preached and understood. Often overlooked and regularly misunderstood, the Book of Numbers is a daunting prospect for scholars, preachers and students. It covers part of the Israelites' wilderness years between Egypt and the land of the promise - seemingly very different to and detached from our modern context. Yet God's covenant love remains the same, and the book of Numbers remains extremely relevant for ecclesiology and for the church's life within the already-not yet of the present 'wilderness' era. In his magisterial new commentary, Morales carefully demonstrates the ongoing relevance of Numbers, it's positive vision for life and the surprising challenge it offers to contemporary Christians. This detailed and comprehensive commentary sheds fresh light on a part of the Bible often referenced yet rarely preached and explained. The Apollos Old Testament Commentary aims to take with equal seriousness the divine and human aspects of Scripture. It expounds the books of the Old Testament in a scholarly manner, accessible to non-experts, and it shows the relevance of the Old Testament to modern readers. Written by an international team of scholars, these commentaries are intended to serve the needs of those who preach from the Old Testament, as well as scholars and all serious students of the Bible. Volume 1 begins with an Introduction which gives an overview of the issues of date, authorship, sources and outlines the theology of the book, providing pointers towards its interpretation and contemporary application. An annotated Translation of the Hebrew text by L. Michael L. Morales forms the basis for his comments. Within this commentary on Numbers 1-19, Form and Structure sections examine the context, source-critical and form-critical issues and rhetorical devices of each passage. Comment sections offer thorough, detailed exegesis of the historical and theological meaning of each passage, and Explanation sections offer a full exposition of the theological message within the framework of biblical theology and a commitment to the inspiration and authority of the Old Testament.

Book excerpt: Arguing that the way Jesus leads and the way we follow are symbiotic, Peterson begins with a study of how the ways of those who came before Christ revealed and prepared the way of the Lord that became complete in Jesus. He then challenges the ways of the contemporary American church, showing in stark relief how what we have chosen to focus on--consumerism, celebrity, charisma, and so forth--obliterates what is unique in the Jesus way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of God’s presence is deeply embedded in Christian teaching from God’s presence in the Garden of Eden, through the hope of God’s presence in the New Earth. But what does it that mean? Many Christians find it difficult to explain what is meant by God’s presence. We hear of God being especially present in a worship service, or of specific places where God’s presence is expected by the pilgrims who travel there. We know that God’s presence was somehow in the tabernacle, and will be part of the new earth when Jesus returns. It is also taught that God is omnipresent, that is, present everywhere and always.,/p> But what is God’s presence? What does it take for Him to dwell among His people and why does it matter? In this third volume under the Lost in Translation imprint, Deborah Roeger applies her in-depth and detailed yet extremely practical approach to Bible study to look at God’s presence in its many forms and manifestations from the creation to the restoration of God’s creation. As she traces God’s dwelling presence through the pages of Scripture she looks thoughtfully at what God requires of us so He can be present among us. In the process, she provides a thematic look at the whole of scripture that can be used as a guide to study other topics with full attention to the overall context of the story we find in Scripture. It is the story of God, who created for His glory and longs for the restoration of His dwelling presence among His creation. This understanding of the broad context will help you put other events in their proper place in the history of God’s plan of salvation. My Dwelling Place is not just an explanation of biblical terms. It is first of all an explanation of what it takes for God to come and dwell among us. It is then a call to take up our mission and the gifts God has given us and to learn to practice His presence at all times. As in each volume in this series, there is a valuable added resource in the appendix discussing how to do word studies and how to use both available tools for Bible study and to take the context of each passage seriously when doing so. This study can be read individually, but it is especially valuable as a resource for small group study or for a transforming church-wide study.

There is a barrier that has been erected that hinders the church from receiving the fullness of God's Kingdom Blessings. Excessive reasoning is the culprit. There is only one answer powerful enough to tear down this stronghold of the mind. When this truth is obeyed God supernaturally positions us to be fruit bearing disciples of Jesus Christ. We are able to turn the world upside down by our good works and enabled to speak the Word of God with great passion and boldness. The wealth of the Kingdom is ordained to be in the hands of God's people for a purpose.
