Book excerpt: "The extant 1583-1642 records of the Gloucestershire Court of Sewers are a nationally important survival from a small body of documentation that has rarely been fully appreciated by past scholarship. 'Sewers' in this instance are watercourses that drain low-lying coastal marshes, and these Gloucestershire records are to be prized and cherished as much as the rich agricultural land the commissioners of sewers served to protect."--xxvii.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peasants have been despised, underrated, or disregarded in the past. Historians and archaeologists are now giving them a more positive assessment, and in Peasants Making History, Christopher Dyer sets a new agenda for this kind of study. Using as his example the peasants of the west midlands of England, Dyer examines peasant society in relation to their social superiors (their lords), their neighbours, and their households, and finds them making decisions and taking options to improve their lives. In their management of farming, both cultivation of fields and keeping of livestock, they made a series of modifications and some dramatic changes, not just reacting to shifts in circumstances but also devising creative initiatives. Peasants played an active role in the development of towns, both by migrating into urban settings, but also by trading actively in urban markets. Industry in the countryside was not imposed on the rural population, but often the result of peasant enterprise and flexibility. If we examine peasant attitudes and mentalities, we find them engaging in political life, making a major contribution to religion, recognizing the need to conserve the environment, and balancing the interests of individuals with those of the communities in which they lived. Many features of our world have medieval roots, and peasants played an important part in the development of the rural landscape, participation of ordinary people in government, parish church buildings, towns, and social welfare. The evidence to support this peasant-centred view has to be recovered by imaginative interpretation, and by using every type of source, including the testimony of archaeology and landscape.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These remarkable Court of Sewers records open a window on communities of the Gloucestershire Levels between 1583 and 1642, and their struggles against encroachments from the sea in a changing political climate. They touch all walks of life from the peasantry to the county's elite. The extraordinary detail they contain about people and places make them a valuable resource for family and local historians. They are almost unique in their survival, and of national significance. From mud walls to grass embankments fortified with stone, sea walls have defended coastal Gloucestershire since Roman times, and management of flood risk and drainage on the low-lying land they protected is documented from the medieval period. Maintenance was a constant draw on labour, materials and finances, especially following the great Severn Estuary flood of 1607 and another significant inundation in 1636. This edited transcription, fully indexed, reveals the condition of the sea walls and drainage systems before and after these events. 'Sewers' here are watercourses, natural or manmade. Courts of Sewers were the forerunners of today's Internal Drainage Boards, and their form of local government deserves wider attention not only from historians, but from scientists and policymakers who seek a better understanding of historic floods. A comprehensive glossary assists the reader with unusual terminology.

Book excerpt: "The eighty-three documents presented here, varied in length and character, are not all concerned with Suffolk, but they are all connected with the eventful lives of Sir Thomas (later Viscount) Savage and his wife Elizabeth Savage (later Countress Rivers), who married in 1602 and whose homes included Melford Hall." "Thomas and Elizabeth both inherited considerable estates in Suffolk, Essex and Cheshire. Within a tight circle of aristocratic Catholics, they became prominent servants of the royal family during the reigns of James I and Charles I. After Thomas's death in 1635, Elizabeth remained an intimate of the queen, but her two houses of St. Osyth's and Melford Hall were sacked in 1642, and she remained chronically short of money up to her death in 1651." "The central document is a remarkable inventory of 1635-6, taken after Thomas died, listing the contents of Melford Hall in Suffolk, Rocksavage in Cheshire and a town house on Tower Hill in London."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: This study presents a full account of Sheppard's employment under Oliver Cromwell's Protectorate as well as an examination of his family background and education, his religious commitment to John Owen's party of Independents and his legal philosophy. An appraisal of all Sheppard's legal works, including those written during the Civil War and the Restoration period, illustrates the overlapping concerns with law reform, religion and politics in his generation. Sheppard had impressively consistent goals for the reform of English law and his prescient proposals anticipate the reforms ultimately adopted in the nineteenth century, culminating in the Judicature Acts of 1875-8. Dr Matthews examines the relative importance of Sheppard's books to his generation and to legal literature in general. The study provides a full bibliography of Sheppard's legal and religious works and an appendix of the sources Sheppard used in the composition of his books on the law.

Book excerpt: The day the sea came in tells the story of a great tidal flood that happened more than 400 years ago on the Gwent Levels, South Wales. How did Thomas, Sarah and their families survive, and what adventures did they get up to? Rose Hewlett is an historian. She has been studying the 1607 flood for a long time. Her PhD research at the University of Bristol is helping people to understand why the flood happened, and how men, women and children living on the low-lying coastal lands around the Severn Sea coped in its aftermath. Rose's family has lived on both sides of the Severn Estuary for centuries.
