Book excerpt: Have you ever spilled glitter? It's almost impossible to get every speck back into the bottle. It's beautiful but messy if we're careless. Our influence is like glitter. What we say and do can affect other people. This modern world is saying if we feel something is right, we don't have to worry about the repercussions but the Bible speaks about the deceitfulness of the heart. We've found comfort in entertainment and technology. Social media satisfies us. Netflix pacifies us. And God is calling us up to change that. In Luke, a rich ruler asks Jesus about eternal life. Jesus tells him to give up his comfortable lifestyle and the man becomes full of sorrow. The price was too much to pay. I feel like God is asking us that now. Give up what is comfortable and follow me. Make the right choices to leave a richer legacy. The question is, will you?

Download or read book Glitter written by Nicole Seymour and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2022-06-02 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Object Lessons is a series of short, beautifully designed books about the hidden lives of ordinary things. Glitter reveals the complexity of an object often dismissed as frivolous. Nicole Seymour describes how glitter's consumption and status have shifted across centuries-from ancient cosmetic to queer activist tool, environmental pollutant to biodegradable accessory-along with its composition, which has variously included insects, glass, rocks, salt, sugar, plastic, and cellulose. Through a variety of examples, from glitterbombing to glitter beer, Seymour shows how this substance reflects the entanglements of consumerism, emotion, environmentalism, and gender/sexual identity. Object Lessons is published in partnership with an essay series in The Atlantic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A teenage fairy contends with the consequences of war in this coming-of-age fantasy by the award-winning author of Teeth and Not Otherwise Specified. Sixteen-year-old Beckan and her friends are the only fairies brave enough to stay in Ferrum when war breaks out. Now there is tension between the immortal fairies, the subterranean gnomes, and the mysterious tightropers who arrived to liberate the fairies. But when Beckan’s clan is forced to venture into the gnome underworld to survive, they find themselves tentatively forming unlikely friendships and making sacrifices they couldn’t have imagined. As danger mounts, Beckan finds herself caught between her loyalty to her friends, her desire for peace, and a love she never expected. This stunning, lyrical fantasy is a powerful exploration of what makes a family, what justifies a war, and what it means to truly love. Praise for A History of Glitter and Blood “With Ferrum, Moskowitz has built a vividly gritty fairy realm and populated it with a richly diverse cast of characters. . . . This novel of friendship, love, and fighting for one’s beliefs should find a place among fans of the modern fairy story.” —Kirkus Reviews “Reminiscent of Holly Black and Laini Taylor, this gritty fantasy/war story is also an exploration of love in many forms . . . and creating a family of choice.” —The Horn Book Magazine “The author’s talent is evident as she ambitiously tackles complex themes of violence, sexual awakening, politics, and even infertility.” —School Library Journal “Thick, sultry, lyrical language builds a strong sense of atmosphere . . . [in] this rich, off-kilter snarl of a story.” —Booklist “Gritty, intense, sensational, and moving.” —Fresh Fiction

It reveals a very secret and unromantic world, one that is dominated and controlled by a handful of mighty corporations. Download or read book Glitterworlds written by Rebecca Coleman and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2021-06-29 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An original examination of the ubiquity of glitter—from bodily adornment to activist glitter bombing—and its vibrant and transformational properties. Glitter is everywhere, from crafting to makeup, from vagazelling to glitter-bombing, from fashion to fish. Glitter also gets everywhere. It sticks to what it is and isn't supposed to, and travels beyond its original uses, eliciting reactions ranging from delight to irritation. In Glitterworlds, Rebecca Coleman examines this ubiquity of glitter, following it as it moves across different popular cultural worlds and exploring its effect on understandings and experiences of gender, sexuality, class and race. Coleman investigates how girls engage with glitter in collaging workshops to imagine their futures; how glitter can adorn the outside and the inside of the body; how glitter features in the films Glitter and Precious; and how LGBTQ* activists glitter bomb homophobic and transphobic people. Throughout, Coleman attends to the plurality of politics that glitter generates, approaching this through the concepts of hope, wonder, fabulation, and prefigurative politics—all of which indicate the making of different, better worlds, although often not in ways that are straightforward or conventional. She develops an original account of future politics, where time is nonlinear and sometimes non-progressive. Coleman's argument brings together feminist cultural theory, feminist new materialisms, and theories on futures and temporality, in order to propose that we should understand glitter as a thing—vibrant, processual, transformational, and traversing boundaries between media and material, culture and nature, bodies and environments.
Book Synopsis Glitter Up the Dark by : Sasha Geffen
Download or read book Glitter Up the Dark written by Sasha Geffen and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why has music so often served as an accomplice to transcendent expressions of gender? Why did the query "is he musical?" become code, in the twentieth century, for "is he gay?" Why is music so inherently queer? For Sasha Geffen, the answers lie, in part, in music’s intrinsic quality of subliminal expression, which, through paradox and contradiction, allows rigid gender roles to fall away in a sensual and ambiguous exchange between performer and listener. Glitter Up the Dark traces the history of this gender fluidity in pop music from the early twentieth century to the present day. Starting with early blues and the Beatles and continuing with performers such as David Bowie, Prince, Missy Elliot, and Frank Ocean, Geffen explores how artists have used music, fashion, language, and technology to break out of the confines mandated by gender essentialism and establish the voice as the primary expression of gender transgression. From glam rock and punk to disco, techno, and hip-hop, music helped set the stage for today’s conversations about trans rights and recognition of nonbinary and third-gender identities. Glitter Up the Dark takes a long look back at the path that led here.

Book Synopsis Learning C# by Programming Games by : Wouter van Toll
Download or read book Learning C# by Programming Games written by Wouter van Toll and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-21 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing computer games is a perfect way to learn how to program in modern programming languages. This book teaches how to program in C# through the creation of computer games – and without requiring any previous programming experience. Contrary to most programming books, van Toll, Egges, and Fokker do not organize the presentation according to programming language constructs, but instead use the structure and elements of computer games as a framework. For instance, there are chapters on dealing with player input, game objects, game worlds, game states, levels, animation, physics, and intelligence. The reader will be guided through the development of four games showing the various aspects of game development. Starting with a simple shooting game, the authors move on to puzzle games consisting of multiple levels, and conclude the book by developing a full-fledged platform game with animation, game physics, and intelligent enemies. They show a number of commonly used techniques in games, such as drawing layers of sprites, rotating, scaling and animating sprites, dealing with physics, handling interaction between game objects, and creating pleasing visual effects. At the same time, they provide a thorough introduction to C# and object-oriented programming, introducing step by step important programming concepts such as loops, methods, classes, collections, and exception handling. This second edition includes a few notable updates. First of all, the book and all example programs are now based on the library MonoGame 3.6, instead of the obsolete XNA Game Studio. Second, instead of explaining how the example programs work, the text now invites readers to write these programs themselves, with clearly marked reference points throughout the text. Third, the book now makes a clearer distinction between general (C#) programming concepts and concepts that are specific to game development. Fourth, the most important programming concepts are now summarized in convenient “Quick Reference” boxes, which replace the syntax diagrams of the first edition. Finally, the updated exercises are now grouped per chapter and can be found at the end of each chapter, allowing readers to test their knowledge more directly. The book is also designed to be used as a basis for a game-oriented programming course. Supplementary materials for organizing such a course are available on an accompanying web site, which also includes all example programs, game sprites, sounds, and the solutions to all exercises.

New York is every bit as big and bustling as Kitty’s heard, and as she adjusts to life there and befriends a blue-haired boy, she starts to wonder if her memories of her mum don’t need to stay in one place—if there’s a way for them to be with Kitty every day, everywhere.

Book Synopsis The Winner Effect by : Ian Robertson
Download or read book The Winner Effect written by Ian Robertson and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes a winner? Why do some succeed both in life and in business, and others fail? And why do a few individuals end up supremely powerful, while many remain powerless? Are men more likely to be power junkies than women? The 'winner effect' is a term used in biology to describe how an animal that has won a few fights against weak opponents is much more likely to win later bouts against stronger contenders. As Ian Robertson reveals, it applies to humans, too.Success changes the chemistry of the brain, making you more focused, smarter, more confident and more aggressive. The effect is as strong as any drug. And the more you win, the more you will go on to win. But the downside is that winning can become physically addictive.By understanding what the mental and physical changes are that take place in the brain of a 'winner', how they happen, and why they affect some people more than others, Robertson answers the question of why some people attain and then handle success better than others. He explains what makes a winner - or a loser - and how we can use the answers to these questions to understand better the behaviour of our business colleagues, employees, family and friends.
