Book Synopsis Juneau Icefield Research Project (1949-1958) by : Cal Heusser
Download or read book Juneau Icefield Research Project (1949-1958) written by Cal Heusser and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2007-04-17 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Juneau Icefield Research Project (JIRP) was formed to find a prototype area to study Alaska's coastal glaciers and trends in climatic change. For the past 57 years JIRP has conducted a systematic study of key receding and advancing glaciers, including Lemon Creek and Taku Glaciers. From this study, a model has been developed to study the mass balance of these glaciers and their relation to general atmospheric circulation. Taku's mass balance was expected to provide a meaningful assessment of flakier climate relations and environmental trends, specifically the increase in atmospheric trace element pollution and global warming.Juneau Icefield Research Project (1949-1958) is represented by 15 chapters, organized in four parts: Background of the Project, Early Years of the Project (1949-1952, Later Years of the Project (1953-1958), and Summation and Epilogue. After describing the Project's background, Chapters 3 through 12 cover year-by-year activities, personnel, logistics, and research of the Taku and Lemon Creek Glaciers. These chapters included day-to-day journal entries that represent a record of the informal itineraries covering the course of the study. Chapters 13 and 14 summarize glaciological findings on Taku Glacier and the status of hydrological budgets on Lemon Creek Glacier through the International Geophysical year (1957-19658). The final chapter of the text is an overview of paleoecological work by the Project in North Pacific America brought into the context of modern research with the recognition of glacier-climate cycles. * Documents the study Juneau Icefield Research Project on a year-by-year account covering activities, personnel, logistics and research * Discusses the model developed from the JIRP and explains its importance in predicting future climate changes* Presents the information with day-to-day journal entries, making the text attractive and easy to read

Book Synopsis The Making of a Rescuer by : Nicholas Campbell Corff
Download or read book The Making of a Rescuer written by Nicholas Campbell Corff and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11-26 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about the making of a hero - a rescuer. There are few of us that can claim to be bigger-than-life heroes, but surely the story of Dr. Otto Trotts life is the story of one of these. Because of his existence many lives have been saved or improved, human suffering has been reduced, and the world is a better place. What greater statement can be made about a person? A hiker sees the beautiful blue of a mountain gentian just off the trail and stops to capture the image through a snapshot, but in seeking a slightly wider angle steps back -- in a flash the hiker lies injured amid the rocks. A snowboarder searches for untouched powder snow, but finds a cliff instead. A small plane has engine trouble and glides steeply toward a mountain meadow. An early snowstorm catches two climbers exposed in the high alpine. An avalanche buries a foolish snowmobiler trying to make the highest mark on the side of snow-covered slope. An older gentleman has a heart attack far from his city hospital. Its quite possible and even probable that what all of the above have in common is Dr. Otto Trott. He co-founded the search and rescue organization that seeks out the injured and carries them down from the mountains, he pioneered the medical treatments that will be used for hypothermia and frostbite, he introduced advanced European methods of climbing as well as the identification of avalanche danger areas and the systematic search for and rescue of accident victims. Most importantly, Otto taught generations of others to follow in his footsteps. As Lou Whittaker, the renowned mountain guide states, This book is a must for anyone who seeks the mountains and their reward. Dee Molenaar the acclaimed mountaineer, artist and writer, says that this treatise is long overdue, while the legendary high altitude premier climber Jim Wickwire writes that Nicholas Corff has brought to life the fascinating story of Otto Trott There is no question that Dr. Otto Trott was one of those few men who was a legend in his own time, but he always remained a man of great empathy as well as skill who sought to relieve suffering, improve the safety of the outdoors and protect the mountain environment he so loved. In his long and adventuresome life he overcame great loss with courage and perseverance, and ultimately was the recipient of many awards including the Jefferson Award. Along with the text there are over 250 full page photos and illustrations.

Book Synopsis Sculpted by Ice by : Michael Collier
Download or read book Sculpted by Ice written by Michael Collier and published by Alaska Natural History Association. This book was released on 2004 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ice once covered most of North America. Today, Alaska, with its approximately 100,000 glaciers, is a living example of its profound influence - the state's rugged landscape is a textbook of glacial activity, and geologist and photographer Michael Collier guides you through its pages. In the company of scientists studying this ancient ice, he approaches the great sleeping beasts on foot (crampons snugly strapped on), from a kayak (rocking gently in an icefall's wake), and from the air (through the window of a small plane). Follow him across the tricky terrain of glacial terms and geologic time - it's a journey well worth taking.
