Book excerpt: The Girl With Brains in her Feet follows the progress of Jack, a mixed-race 13 year old girl growing up in the seventies in the home of Melton Mowbray Pork Pies. Under pressure from every side - periods, boys, losing her virginity before being left behind by her mates, casual racial abuse and a PE teacher who thinks she's going to be the next Mary Decker, Jack's only real motivation is her overwhelming lust for life .. . The story is about a bottleneck. Jack just doesn't prioritise and everything collides. In the end, each person lets her down in their own way, and the only person who is there for her is her mother. Endearing, amusing, astonishingly accurate about teenage life, The Girl with Brains in her Feet is an uplifting story about one young girl on the fast track to womanhood.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a critical review of the pelvic sciences—past, present and future—from an anatomical and physiological perspective and is intended for researchers, medical practitioners and paramedical therapists in the fields of urology, gynecology and obstetrics, proctology, physiotherapy, as well as for patients. The book starts with a “construction plan” of the pelvis and shows its structural consequences. The historical background of pelvic studies proceeds from medieval and early Italian models to the definitive understanding of the pelvic anatomy in the Seventeenth century. During these eras of pelvic research, concepts and approaches developed that are illustrated with examples from comparative anatomy and from mutations, also with regard to the biomechanics of pelvic structures. Perceptions of the pelvis as an important element in sexual arousal and mating conduct are discussed, as well as attitudes to circumcision, castration and other mutilations, in its anthropological, social context. The anatomy and physiology of the pelvic wall and its organs as well as the development of these pelvic organs are covered as a prerequisite to understanding, for example, the spread of pelvic carcinoma and male and female bladder muscle function. Connective pelvic tissue is examined in its reinforcing capacity for pelvic structures, but also as a “hiding place” for infections. Innervations and reflexes relayed through the pelvic nerves are discussed in order to explain incontinence, sphincter function and the control of smooth and striated muscles in the pelvis. Catheters and drugs acting on pelvic function are described, and a critical review of alternative clinical methods for treating pelvic dysfunctions is provided.

Book excerpt: An inventive and richly visual novel about young lovers on a quest to find a cure for a magical ailment, perfect for readers of Alice Hoffman Strange things are happening on the remote and snowbound archipelago of St. Hauda's Land. Unusual winged creatures flit around the icy bogland, albino animals hide themselves in the snow-glazed woods, and Ida Maclaird is slowly turning into glass. Ida is an outsider in these parts, a mainlander who has visited the islands only once before. Yet during that one fateful visit the glass transformation began to take hold, and now she has returned in search of a cure. Midas Crook is a young loner who has lived on the islands his entire life. When he meets Ida, something about her sad, defiant spirit pierces his emotional defenses. As Midas helps Ida come to terms with her affliction, she gradually unpicks the knots of his heart. Love must be paid in precious hours and, as the glass encroaches, time is slipping away fast. Will they find a way to stave off the spread of the glass? The Girl with Glass Feet is a dazzlingly imaginative and magical first novel, a love story to treasure.

Hoping to align the cities and enjoy the advantages of a romantic union, Gahan wishes to marry Tara. However, Tara does not reciprocate this love. After rejecting the engagement, Tara sets out in her flying ship. When she flies into a turbulent storm, Tara crashes her ship in an unknown territory. Unharmed but still in danger, Tara is forced to run from her ship to escape the wild animals of the area, falling into a trap. Kidnapped by Kaldanes, a group of Barsoomians with large heads and six crab-like legs, Tara must find a way to save herself before her captors achieve their plan of eating her. Meanwhile, perturbed by her disappearance, Gahan sets out to find Tara. But when he runs into the same storm Tara crashed in, his ship goes down, leaving him in a similar predicament. Through stealth, charm, and cleverness, Tara and Gahan are able to escape with their new friend, Ghek. When they find themselves in an isolated city, the trio are trapped once again, and this time, they’ll have to win a violent and deadly game to reclaim their freedom. Continuing the legacy of the mighty John Carter, The Chessman of Mars depicts a new generation’s adventures on the thrilling planet of Mars. With imaginative prose, romance, and adventure, Burroughs’ The Chessmen of Mars still fosters an exhilarating reading experience nearly one-hundred years after its publication. This edition of The Chessmen of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs features a new, eye-catching cover design and is printed in an easy-to-read font. With these accommodations, The Chessmen of Mars caters to a modern audience while preserving the original wonder and adventure of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Companion to Contemporary Black British Culture is the first comprehensive reference book to provide multidisciplinary coverage of the field of black cultural production in Britain. The publication is of particular value because despite attracting growing academic interest in recent years, this field is still often subject to critical and institutional neglect. For the purpose of the Companion, the term 'black' is used to signify African, Caribbean and South Asian ethnicities, while at the same time addressing the debates concerning notions of black Britishness and cultural identity. This single volume Companion covers seven intersecting areas of black British cultural production since 1970: writing, music, visual and plastic arts, performance works, film and cinema, fashion and design, and intellectual life. With entries on distinguished practitioners, key intellectuals, seminal organizations and concepts, as well as popular cultural forms and local activities, the Companion is packed with information and suggestions for further reading, as well as offering a wide lens on the events and issues that have shaped the cultural interactions and productions of black Britain over the last thirty years. With a range of specialist advisors and contributors, this work promises to be an invaluable sourcebook for students, researchers and academics interested in exploring the diverse, complex and exciting field of black cultural forms in postcolonial Britain.
