Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Girl From Montana The late afternoon sun was streaming in across the cabin floor as the girl stole around the corner and looked cautiously in at the door. There was a kind of tremulous courage in her face. She had a duty to perform, and she was resolved to do it without delay. She shaded her eyes with her hand from the glare of the sun, set a firm foot upon the threshold, and, with one wild glance around to see whether all was as she had left it, entered her home and stood for a moment shuddering in the middle of the floor. A long procession of funerals seemed to come out of the past and meet her eye as she looked about upon the signs of the primitive, unhallowed one which had just gone out from there a little while before. The girl closed her eyes, and pressed their hot, dry lids hard with her cold fingers; but the vision was clearer even than with her eyes open. She could see the tiny baby sister lying there in the middle of the room, so little and white and pitiful; and her handsome, careless father sitting at the head of the rude home-made coffin, sober for the moment; and her tired, disheartened mother, faded before her time, dry eyed and haggard, beside him. But that was long ago, almost at the beginning of things for the girl. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Golden Woman: A Story of the Montana Hills For some moments she gazed half-vacantly through the window. Then alertness and interest came back to her eyes, and her look resumed its normal hardness. It was an unlovely face, but its unloveliness lay in its expression. There was something so unyielding in the keen, aquiline nose and pointed chin. The gray eyes were so cold. The pronounced brows were almost threatening in their mark ing and depression. There was not a feature in her face that was not handsome, and yet, collectively, they gave her a look at once forbidding, and even cruel. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montana This little book is published under authority of the act passed at the last session of the Legislative Assembly which increased the duties of the Commissioner of Agriculture. Labor and Industry and directed him to collect data "upon the agricultural, commercial, mining, labor, or other industrial resources of the State or upon the educational and social interests on sanitary conditions of the people of the State." and to provide for the publication and publicity of reports containing such statistics. It is the first publication branch of the Bureau: and the aim has been to compile from such data as has been collected a report giving a general idea of the resources of Montana and suggesting the advantages which it possesses and the opportunities which it offers to the homeseeker. The subject is too vast to be fully covered in any one book: and this little work, hurriedly compiled to meet a pressing demand, is not as complete as could be desired. Within its covers, however, will be found many facts which will prove of interest to citizens of Montana as well as to non-residents. They indicate the greatness of the State in area, in achievements and in possibilities: but any examination of the resources of Montana must lead to the conclusion that it is yet in the infancy of its development. This little book will serve to answer many of the thousands of inquiries that are coming to this Bureau, and will be the cause, it is hoped, of inducing many who read it to visit the State and examine for themselves the advantages it offers. Montana invites inspection: and needs to make no extravagant claims to establish the fact that it offers to the homeseeker and the capitalist opportunities which are unequalled elsewhere in the United States. In collecting data and illustrations for this work, the Commissioner has been placed under obligations by so many men who are working to give publicity to the advantages of Montana that he lacks space to name them here. He hopes, however, that each one will consider himself personally thanked for his assistance. The descriptions of the various counties have been edited from accounts furnished by residents having special knowledge of local conditions. Appended hereto is a list of the commercial clubs and organizations in the various counties which are doing very effective publicity work, and which are ready to supply reliable information as to the opportunities offered in their section to any one who will call upon - or correspond with - them. This Bureau is, in a measure, a clearing-house of information for the entire State. Its services are placed at the disposal of any one who wishes information concerning Montana and it will be glad to answer inquiries on the subject. Book excerpt: This true story of a Victorian-era young woman who follows her husband to a small town with the improbable name of Gilt Edge, Montana, will remind readers of Wallace Stegner's Angle of Repose, the classic novel of a woman's life in the Mountain West. As a young girl, Lillian Weston, the author's grandmother, aspired to be a concert pianist. However, as a young woman in turn-of-the-century New York, she became a newspaper columnist. Her marriage to Frank Hazen took her west in 1899, ending her career as a newspaperwoman. She turned her writing skills to journals, diaries, stories, and poems, which traced her family's life on a frontier that was no longer unspoiled. The Hazens endured brutal winters and dry summers and endeavored to raise cattle and chickens by trial and error. Lillian was an assiduous diarist who included details of her turbulent marriage challenged by Frank's bad business deals. The details of birth control and child rearing, gambling and prostitution, education and health care are all part of this story, offering glimpses into everyday life that often go unreported in the larger story of western expansion.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Night-Riders: A Romance of Early Montana Forks Settlement no longer occupies its place upon the ordnance map of the state of Montana. At least not the Forks Settlement - the one which nestled in a hollow on the plains, beneath the shadow of the Rocky Mountains. It is curious how these little places do contrive to slip off the map in the course of time. There is no doubt but that they do, and are wholly forgotten, except, perhaps, by those who actually lived or visited there. It is this way with all new countries, and anywhere from twenty to thirty years ago Montana was distinctly a new country. It was about '85 that Forks Settlement enjoyed the height of its prosperity - a prosperity based on the supply of dry-goods and machinery to a widely scattered and sparse population of small ranchers and farmers. These things brought it into existence and kept it afloat for some years. Then, it gradually faded from existence - just as such places do. When John Tresler rode into Forks he wondered what rural retreat he had chanced upon. He didn't wonder in those word, his languages was much more derogatory to place than that.
