Book Synopsis The Canadian Experience of the Great War by : Brian Douglas Tennyson
Download or read book The Canadian Experience of the Great War written by Brian Douglas Tennyson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the United States did not enter the First World War until April 1917, Canada enlisted the moment Great Britain engaged in the conflict in August 1914. The Canadian contribution was great, as more than 600,000 men and women served in the war effort--400,000 of them overseas--out of a population of 8 million. More than 150,000 were wounded and nearly 67,000 gave their lives. The war was a pivotal turning point in the history of the modern world, and its mindless slaughter shattered a generation and destroyed seemingly secure values. The literature that the First World War generated, and continues to generate so many years later, is enormous and addresses a multitude of cultural and social matters in the history of Canada and the war itself. Although many scholars have brilliantly analyzed the literature of the war, little has been done to catalog the writings of ordinary participants: men and women who served in the war and wrote about it but are not included among well-known poets, novelists, and memoirists. Indeed, we don't even know how many titles these people published, nor do we know how many more titles were added later by relatives who considered the recollections or collected letters worthy of publication. Brian Douglas Tennyson's The Canadian Experience of the Great War: A Guide to Memoirs is the first attempt to identify all of the published accounts of First World War experiences by Canadian veterans.

Download or read book Europe written by Michael H. MacDonald and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1996 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Macdonald sees Europe (and particularly England, France, and Germany) as the primary foundation of our western way of life, producing many of our greatest thinkers, artists, writers, politicians, and saints. While Europe, A Tantalizing Romance affirms the value of all European cultures, Macdonald chooses to focus mostly on the literary, artistic, philosophical, and theological contributions of England, France, Germany, Russia, central Europe, and Scandinavia, as well as a number of Europe's most visited cities--London, Paris, Berlin, Munich, Vienna, Prague, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Copenhagen, Rome, Florence, Venice, Madrid, and Athens. This book provides readers with a brief, scholarly, practical synthesis of what Europe stands for and has to offer its visitors. Revised numerous times based upon the author's experiences as Director of the European Quarter at Seattle Pacific University, this is an invaluable guide for travelers and non-travelers alike.
Book Synopsis The Book of Melusine of Lusignan in History, Legend and Romance by : Gareth Knight
Download or read book The Book of Melusine of Lusignan in History, Legend and Romance written by Gareth Knight and published by Skylight Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considerable interest in faery tradition has grown up in recent years and not least in the story of Melusine of Lusignan, the subject of a prose romance by Jean d'Arras at the end of the 14th century, swiftly followed by one in verse by Couldrette. This book provides a collection of material from various sources to give an all round picture of the remarkable faery, her town, her church, her immediate family, and the great Lusignan dynasty she founded. An established authority on Melusine, Gareth Knight collects together all the best source material, which he translates from the French, and presents his own researches into the Lusignan family of the 12th century, whose dynasty included kings of Cyprus and Jerusalem, examining the possibility of a familiar spirit guiding the family in its destiny.
