Book excerpt: The Ghost is the next chapter in the story of Jacob Cahill, the boy prodigy who miraculously escaped Communist Chinese agents when he was only fifteen years old. He has now chosen to fight the Communists in Vietnam rather than continue his education at a prestigious university in America, which he is more than well suited to do. His family and friends are aghast at his decision, many thinking he will be no more than cannon fodder in a useless and unwinnable war. Although revenge is a factor in his decision since the Communists in China killed his parents, he also believes it is his duty to fight for his country in a time of war. He enlists, is sent to boot camp and then to Vietnam where his prodigious physical and intellectual skills are tested in horrific combat, which not only confront him with what he has become but result in significant wounds from which he may never recover. In the end, as the enemy converges on him, he wonders if the endgame is some shallow grave in the jungles of Laos from which he will never be found.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There’s hardly a room in Belcourt Castle that is specter free. In The Ghosts of Belcourt Castle, author Harle Tinney shares over twenty paranormal experiences at Belcourt Castle in Newport, Rhode Island. This sixty-room mansion was completed in 1894, but it stood empty for many years until Donald Tinney and his family purchased it in 1956. Accompanied by photographs, The Ghosts of Belcourt Castle, includes personal anecdotes and some third party stories. Tinney recounts some of the home’s visitors—the mysterious monk, the pink lady in the Madame’s bedroom, the suit of armor that screams, ghostly dancers in the French Gothic ballroom, and a disembodied arm that pointed through the staircase at a painting, which mysteriously fell from the wall only a few minutes later. Judging from the list of apparitions and eerie feelings in some areas, Belcourt Castle might just be the most haunted house in America.

Book excerpt: The first major biography of the iconic actor Henry Fonda, a story of stardom, manhood, and the American character Henry Fonda's performances—in The Grapes of Wrath, Young Mr. Lincoln, The Lady Eve, 12 Angry Men, On Golden Pond—helped define "American" in the twentieth century. He worked with movie masters from Ford and Sturges to Hitchcock and Leone. He was a Broadway legend. He fought in World War II and was loved the world over. Yet much of his life was rage and struggle. Why did Fonda marry five times—tempestuously to actress Margaret Sullavan, tragically to heiress Frances Brokaw, mother of Jane and Peter? Was he a man of integrity, worthy of the heroes he played, or the harsh father his children describe, the iceman who went onstage hours after his wife killed herself? Why did suicide shadow his life and art? What memories troubled him so? McKinney's Fonda is dark, complex, fascinating, and a product of glamour and acclaim, early losses and Midwestern demons—a man haunted by what he'd seen, and by who he was.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All the sites in the book have been chosen with an eye toward several criteria, including how accessible they are to the public, how evocative experience a trip to them is likely to produce, and the extent to which they actually appear to be haunted. A great many in the various regions of Maryland have some connection to the Colonial era, the War of 1812, or the Civil War, all significant aspects of the state's haunted history. Maryland is divided into six regions for purposes of this book: Baltimore, Central, D.C. Metro, Eastern Shore, Southern, and Western. Geographically speaking, Maryland is not a large state. It is, however, among the oldest in the country, and has a rich, varied, and turbulent history that has contributed to an exceptionally high number of haunted sites. Because it is relatively compact, Maryland is in many ways an ideal state for a haunted roadtrip -- especially in an era of historically high gasoline prices -- and many haunted sites within the same area can easily be reached on a single weekend-long trip. Indeed, although my own home is currently in Northern Virginia, on the southern side of the Potomac River from Maryland, its furthest point from me is still somewhat less than 300 miles -- as opposed to nearly 500 for some of the most distant points in southwestern Virginia. Note that this outline includes more listings than there will be room for in the book, and that a number of these will either be cut, reduced to sidebars within larger chapters, or listed in the appendix of additional haunted sites. As with Ghosthunting Virginia, research revealed early on a striking number of sites reputed by various sources to be haunted. With space in this volume for only a limited number of these, the authors carefully attempted to identify a representative selection that both emphasized variety and a struck a balance between "must include" sites -- such as the graveyard where Edgar Allan Poe is buried -- and more obscure ones that do not appear in any other books.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1967, more than 60,000 Jewish-Americans have settled in the territories captured by the State of Israel during the Six Day War. Comprising 15 percent of the settler population today, these immigrants have established major communities, transformed domestic politics and international relations, and committed shocking acts of terrorism. They demand attention in both Israel and the United States, but little is known about who they are and why they chose to leave America to live at the center of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In this deeply researched, engaging work, Sara Yael Hirschhorn unsettles stereotypes, showing that the 1960s generation who moved to the occupied territories were not messianic zealots or right-wing extremists but idealists engaged in liberal causes. They did not abandon their progressive heritage when they crossed the Green Line. Rather, they saw a historic opportunity to create new communities to serve as a beacon—a “city on a hilltop”—to Jews across the globe. This pioneering vision was realized in their ventures at Yamit in the Sinai and Efrat and Tekoa in the West Bank. Later, the movement mobilized the rhetoric of civil rights to rebrand itself, especially in the wake of the 1994 Hebron massacre perpetrated by Baruch Goldstein, one of their own. On the fiftieth anniversary of the 1967 war, Hirschhorn illuminates the changing face of the settlements and the clash between liberal values and political realities at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Book excerpt: "A majestic book."--Bessel van der Kolk, MD, author of The Body Keeps the Score A unique joint memoir by a U.S. Marine and a conflict photographer whose unlikely friendship helped both heal their war-wounded bodies and souls "The dueling-piano spirit of SHOOTING GHOSTS works because its authors are so committed to transparency, admitting readers into the dark crevices of their isolation."--Wall St Journal Through the unpredictability of war and its aftermath, a decorated Marine sergeant and a world-trotting war photographer became friends, their bond forged as they patrolled together through the dusty alleyways of Helmand province and camped side by side in the desert. But when Sergeant T. J. Brennan was injured during a Taliban ambush, he and conflict photographer Finbarr O’Reilly returned home, each to face the fallout of war in their own way. Their friendship offered them both a shot at redemption. Shooting Ghosts looks at the horrors of war directly, but then turns to a journey that draws on our growing understanding of what recovery takes, charting the ways two survivors have found to calm the ghosts and reclaim a measure of peace.

This little town at one point was a center for mining and tourism in Carbon County in the late 1800s. Along with that important history, the town also developed a rich fabric of folklore, legends and ghost stories which author David A.Wargo has recorded in this volume.Drawing from the rich stories of his community and personal experiences, he provides a new perspective into the fabric of this historically important town. Read about the Woman in White, one of the oldest legends in the community. Also learn about Summit Hill's role in the Molly Maguire story, ghostly tales of soldiers and miners, the unsolved payroll murders, the phantom singer and haunted cemeteries. These stories provide a richness to this quaint little borough along with historical context making this book not only a treasure of folklore but a useful collection of local history and photographs of this hilltop town.
