Book excerpt: Padraic Tuohy or Poet as he is known is a musician, poet and dreamer: but he is about to get his world shattered by events that drive him to the very edge of madness. A collection of disparate characters collude to drag him screaming back to a reality he is ill equipped to deal with. A mysterious beauty who seems to be stalking him, a Glaswegian psychopath and his weird companion, lethal college professors and a hooded drug gang all take him as far out of his comfort zone as it is possible to imagine forcing him to re-evaluate his whole life and make decisions no gentle poet should have to make.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After finding myself out of work, I needed something that would keep my brain working on an intellectual level higher than housework provided. I joined Photo a Day in August 2013, and it helped. However, my world was becoming very small as I traveled very little, even to town. I found by the end of August 2014 that I was struggling to find photos that werent just repeated. So I made a decision to take a break. Four days later, my life was turned upside down when my parents were involved in a car accident that took the life of my mother and kept my father in the hospital for three months. At the beginning of November, I decided to try again, but it wasnt long when I was dealing with the same problem as before. Depression was also becoming an increasing issue, and I prayed that God would help me find a way to deal with it on my own. My mother was no longer available to talk to. One morning, it came to me that I might try to write a story using the prompt as the title and take a photo related to the story. It seemed almost crazy but anything was worth a try. After all, I could only fail to deliver, and there would be no shame in that, just only in not trying. I surprised myself! There are some times when I would sit at the computer and have no idea what I was going to write and bit by bit the words would come. There have also been times when I have written more than one story. Other photos have also inspired stories. It was one of my daughters who suggested that I put 366 of them together so you will have a story for each day to read. These are much shorter than my other creations, but I still pray that they will inspire you to keep going when life throws you a spanner. Isaiah 55:8 says, For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, said the Lord. How true!

Book excerpt: A nostalgic trip down the British high street, remembering once famous names such as Woolworths, Athena and C&A and also featuring current favorites, including the ubiquitous Tesco and Marks & Spencer which started life as a penny market stall to become a retail giant that has had to adapt to survive. Full of fact boxes and quirky facts about much-loved shops and the people behind them just who was W.H. Smith and what did those famous initials stand for? A fascinating book which charts the rise and, in too many cases, fall of our favorite shops. There used to be butcher, baker, grocer, greengrocer, draper, Boots, ironmonger (hardware), pub, WH Smith, cafe, bank, Freeman Hardy and Willis, jeweler, Marks and Spencer, furniture shop, hotel, bookseller, off license, haberdasher, Woolworth's, confectioner, cobbler, tobacconist, electrical showroom, Burton's, gas showroom, ladies' fashions, gentlemen's outfitters, and more, and maybe a department store, and several versions of some. What do we have now? Pound shop, charity (thrift) shop, building society branch, betting shop, coffee shop, charity shop, shop boarded up, building society branch, sandwich shop, shop boarded up, kebab takeaway, charity shop, card shop, Indian takeaway, mobile phone shop - we exaggerate but make the point. So what has gone wrong - if it is wrong? The author discusses these and many other topics, and answers hundreds of burning questions. Whatever happened to the Home and Colonial, Timothy White's, Lipton's, the District Bank, the Fifty Shilling Tailor? Who were Jesse Boot, Montague Burton, W H Smith? How did the Co-op start? Whatever happened to all those things we used to buy in those shops in the high street - Balkan Sobranie, Caley Tray, Oxydol, Phillips Stick-a-soles, Icilma Cream, Mansion Polish, Mrs Peek's Puddings? Does any girl still dream of going to work in her Maidenform bra?

In the week before Jack plans to marry, the pair heads out from Los Angeles to the Santa Ynez wine country. For Jack, the tasting tour is Seven Days to D-Day, his final stretch of freedom. Even when Jillian had to hear the news every woman hopes never to receive--breast cancer. Handsome Dr. David Rainier was Jillian’s first true love. Years later, a car accident reunites the two lovers. Slowly they reconnect, though conflicts abound. Is it only the memory of what they once had, or is the spark still alive? Life’s experiences have taught them both to fight for what is important.

Arguing that Humphries is one of Australia's greatest writers, the author reveals a multi-faceted artist whose success is rooted in the British music hall tradition, Dadaism and grotesquerie. Being Australian has also fundamentally shaped the performer and writer, and the author's defence of Humphries against charges of expatriatism is pertinent to the debate on Australian national identity.

Book excerpt: When Julia Probyn's cousin and childhood friend Colin cuts off all contact with his family, it is down to Julia to find him. Setting sail for Morocco – the last place he was seen – and using her occupation as a journalist as a cover, Julia is ready for a fairly lighthearted quest. But Julia wasn't counting on the level of secrecy surrounding her cousin's disappearance. With the British consulate offering little help, Julia must use her charm and tenacity to follow the clues and unravel the mystery left in Colin's wake. Book one of The Julia Probyn Mysteries, The Lighthearted Quest has Ann Bridge's trademark blend of humour and adventure which transports us to exotic places, but also throws a good deal of light on the explosive political issues that French Morocco encountered in the 50s. 'Here's an answer for the multitude of readers demanding a good story, adventure, mystery [and] romance' -Kirkus

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore the wondrous sea and the oddities of human nature in this international bestselling, thrilling epic novel of a Danish port town. Hailed in Europe as an instant classic, We, the Drowned is the story of the port town of Marstal, Denmark, whose inhabitants sailed the world from the mid-nineteenth century to the end of the Second World War. The novel tells of ships wrecked and blown up in wars, of places of terror and violence that continue to lure each generation; there are cannibals here, shrunken heads, prophetic dreams, and miraculous survivals. The result is a brilliant seafaring novel, a gripping saga encompassing industrial growth, the years of expansion and exploration, the crucible of the first half of the twentieth century, and most of all, the sea. Called “one of the most exciting authors in Nordic literature” by Henning Mankell, Carsten Jensen has worked as a literary critic and a journalist, reporting from China, Cambodia, Latin America, the Pacific Islands, and Afghanistan. He lives in Copenhagen and Marstal. “We, the Drowned sets sail beyond the narrow channels of the seafaring genre and approaches Tolstoy in its evocation of war’s confusion, its power to stun victors and vanquished alike…A gorgeous, unsparing novel.”—Washington Post “A generational saga, a swashbuckling sailor’s tale, and the account of a small town coming into modernity—both Melville and Steinbeck might have been pleased to read it.”—New Republic “Dozens of stories coalesce into an odyssey taut with action and drama and suffused with enough heart to satisfy readers who want more than the breakneck thrills of ships battling the elements.”—Publishers Weekly (starred)

However, their presence brought the intrusion of army scouts and prospectors into the Mule Mountains. The coincidental discovery of vast mineral wealth at the future site of Bisbee permanently affixed the fate of the land forever. Rising from the remote desert was a dynamic mining city, a city that grew into one of the most influential communities in the West. Bisbee was unique in the Old West because of the mixed moral values. High society and the decadent underworld lived in a delicate balance, but a vibrant multicultural community was forged from these social fires.
