Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Germans B., like every other human being, does not carry his heart on his sleeve, and he does not turn out his household gods for the inspection of a stranger. He may be worse, and he may be a great deal better than he seems - Oi that his guest cannot judge with any certainty. Perhaps this sounds very Obvious, but it is sur prising how many people there are who would rightly hesitate to give their opinion on an acquaint ance Of a fortnight's standing, and who are yet ready not only to criticise but to condemn a whole nation on evidence stretching over an equally short period Of time, and based probably on still more superficial observation. This mistake, or whatever you please to call it, is not by any means confined to English people. I suppose it was first brought home to me by an absurd book on England, written by a German after a six weeks' sojourn in my country, during which time he had strayed from one horrible experience to another, under the impression that they were the natural and inevitable experiences Of every one. Of course one is indignant over the consequent criticisms, because they are based on - for us - Obviously false data. But we must remember that in six weeks an honest, painstaking student of national habits and customs can gather together enough perfectly genuine material on which - unless he is blessed with an extra ordinary degree Of tolerance - he will consider himself justified in founding a most condemnatory criticism. I have experienced this, alas! In my own person. A year or two ago I was travelling in England with a German friend. I had been foolish enough to boast to her about the politeness Of our policemen. The German feeling for the Rhine can be understood only by sympathy, and the stately colossal figure of Germania at Niederwald, formed of the metal of Erench cannon and gazing across a river now all her own, expresses one of the most vivid thoughts in the mental world of the average German. I have seen divisions of soldiers marched up the hill to gaze at the statue and to hear the story of its installation. One cannot read the poetry of that time without a quickened pulse, and poetry gives a truer idea of national feeling than the discussions of diplomats. No doubt the authorities were not always so true-hearted, so rich ln faith and devotion, as the common people, but it is the common people that we are called on to love, not. The actions of their small band of leaders. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German Classics: Masterpieces of German Literature The news of the occurrence spread rapidly, and all through the day two or three hundred people from Rodez - men, women, and children - were standing on both shores staring with a look of fascination and self-induced horror into the depths of the ravine. The question was raised whether it was not a will-o'-the-wisp that had misled the old man. A woman alleged that she had spoken with a shepherd who declared he had heard a cry for help; this, it is true, occurred about midnight, and Fualdes had left his house at eight o'clock. A stout tinker contended that the darkness had not been as dense as all believed; he him self had crossed the fields, on his way from La Valette, at nine o'clock, and the moon was then shining. The inspec tor of customs took him severely to task, and informed him that a new moon had made its appearance the day before, as one could easily find out by looking in the calendar. The tinker shrugged his shoulders, as if to say that in such con junctures even the calendar was not to be trusted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home Life in Germany Germans often maintain that their country is more diverse than any other, and on that account more difficult to describe: a country Of many races and various rules held loosely together by language and more tightly of late years by the bond Of empire. But the truth probably is, that in our country we see and understand varieties, while in a foreign one we chiefly perceive what is unlike ourselves and common to the people we are Observing. For from the flux and welter Of qualities that form a modern nation certain traits survive peculiar to that nation: specialities Of feature, character, and habit, some seen at first sight, others only discovered after long and intimate acquaint ance. It is undoubtedly true that no one person can be at home in every corner Of the German Empire, or of any other empire. Especial pains have been taken to limit the vocabulary to words of com mon occurrence. That the pupil should develop a feeling for German construction and word arrangement is far more essen tial than that he should at the outset have an extensive vocab ulary at his command. The ability of the average pupil to assimilate a large number of new words with each successive lesson has frequently been overrated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German Classics, Vol. 10 IN editing the present volume, which is the tent/z of my Series of German Classics, I have, in general, adhered to the principle I adopted in the beginning; that is, to interpret the classical writings of Germany - to the best Of my ability - in the manner in which Greek and Latin Classics have been annotated for the use Of English students. The favourable reception which has been ac corded to my editions by my colleagues in Great Britain and in other countries amply justifies my proceeding, and relieves me from the task of dilating on the desir ability, nay necessity, of a thorough interpretation of the modern German Classics. It is now universally conceded that it is only by a careful study of them that German can become both a moral and an intellectual medium for the training Of the mind. At the same time it cannot be denied that, German being a living, and, so to say, a constantly growing language, the study of it has also a purely practical function. Bearing in mind these facts, I have endeavoured to annotate Schiller's jungfrau won Orleans from a literary as well as from a practical point Of view; so that my edition may be of interest to the scholar and serve as a guide to the student Of German as a spoken language. I have, therefore, explained all allu sions to authentic or legendary history, and I have also pointed out the instances in which Schiller deviated from history and from tradition. This process has enabled me to vindicate the poet indirectly against some charges brought forward by certain critics, who were unaware of all the sources at his command, and to what extent he considered it. Expedient to use them. I have said that my vindication was indirect. It is so because I have confined myself to giving my own explanations, and have abstained from entering into personal controversies, which would have been unsuitable to a book like the present. These Stories are so captivating in their original form, that we almost regret, at first, that any attempt should be made to embellish them; and, indeed, nothing but the wit and cleverness of a Musaeus, or, on the other hand, the poetry and deep earnestness of a Tieck, could compensate for the loss of their simple beauty. However, we believe they may be relished in both ways and, without further preface, we commend the following specimens to the reader.same item. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German Classics of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries, Vol. 19 of 20: Masterpieces of German Literature, Translated Into English Is this still the people to which Goethe belonged? At a time when a common cause with Austria conjures up again the shade Of the dear Old Holy Roman Empire no other verse in Faust seems SO inept as that concerning the ugly political song. Today we should rather say An unpolitical song, an ugly song; for to the people that but a few weeks ago was mindful Of naught but works Of peace everything has become a matter of indifference except the burning question Of the hour. Even though the longed-for peace Should soon return, the year 1914 must leave a deep mark in the development Of German literature. As yet we can only look back, not forward, from this milestone; and even in so doing we cannot escape from the present.
