Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents the only comprehensive collection of this fascinating material. Whereas earlier attempts by others have been limited either to individual broadsheet collections or to selected topics, this 11-volume collection reproduces all known extant German political broadsheets of the 17th century along with their numerous variant editions. In all, over 3000 broadsheets are reproduced in full-page size, and for each one all known copies are cited. Two decade's work has been needed to draw this material from over 180 libraries, museums, archives, and private collections in seventeen countries. At least 80% of the broadsheets reproduced in these volumes have never appeared in print since the 17th century. Many of them are extremly rare; over 30% are extant in only one or two copies.

Book excerpt: The years following the Thirty Years' War were marked by continued political unrest in Europe as the major powers vied with one another for military and economic superiority. Many of the events - such as the execution of Charles I of England, the first Anglo-Dutch naval war, the first Northern War, threats from the East, and Habsburg dynastic moves - all found expression in the popular German press. Reproduced in this volume are 450 German broadsheets (and related foreign models and copies) from the years 1649 through 1661. Very little of this material has been reproduced since its original appearance in the 17th century, and many of the individual sheets are extant in only one or two copies worldwide. This volume is part of the only comprehensive edition of German political/historical broadsheets of the 17th century, planned to include ten volumes of reproductions and one index volume*. Each extant sheet is illustrated by a high-quality, full-page reproduction, and for each one all known duplicates are listed. Three decades' work have been needed to draw this rare material from over 200 libraries, museums, archives, and private collections in eighteen countries. This edition makes accessible to scholars in numerous disciplines this important primary source for the 17th century.

Early in the decade the Ottoman Empire posed a grave threat to the West, and later competing national interests led the French, the English, and the Dutch to become embroiled in military confl ict. As people sought to keep abreast of current events, broadsheets constituted one of the most important sources of news. Reproduced in this volume are 450 sheets drawn from over 80 collections in 15 countries for the period from 1662 to 1670. The majority of this material is extremely rare, and very few of the sheets have been reproduced since the original printing in the seventeenth century. The entire edition, which now comprises 9 volumes and includes more than 3000 half-tone reproductions of broadsheets dating from 1600 to 1670, is unparalleled in its breadth and depth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Palatine Family and the Thirty Years' War examines the experience of exiled royal and noble dynasties during the early modern period through a study of the rulers of the Electorate of the Palatinate during the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648). By drawing on a wide range of archival source materials, ranging from financial records, printed manifestos, and considerable quantities of diplomatic and personal correspondence, it investigates the resources available to the exiled 'Palatine Family' as well as their attempts to recover the lands and titles lost by Elector Frederick V—the son-in-law of King James VI and I of England and Scotland—in the opening stages of the Thirty Years' War. This work focuses on the years between Frederick's death in 1632 and the partial restoration of his son Charles Louis under the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Although the 'Palatine Question' remained one of the most divisive and important issues throughout the entire Thirty Years' War, the years 1632-1648 have been greatly overlooked in previous examinations of the Palatine Family's exile. By considering the experiences of exiled elites in early modern Europe—such as the relationship between the Palatine Family and the Stuart Dynasty—this work will reveal the influence of dynastic and familial obligations on the high politics of the period, as well as the importance of conspicuous display and diplomatic recognition for exiled regimes in seventeenth-century Europe. It will demonstrate that that dispossessed rulers and houses were not automatically rendered politically insignificant after losing their lands and titles, and could actually remain an important player on the geo-political stage of early modern Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume draws together an international team of scholars to explore the experience and significance of early modern European continental warfare from an interdisciplinary perspective. Individual essays add to the lively fields of War and Society and the New Military History by combining the history of war with political and diplomatic history, the history of religion, social history, economic history, the history of ideas, the history of emotions, environmental history, art history, musicology, and the history of science and medicine. The contributors address how warfare was entwined with European learning, culture, and the arts, but also examine the ties between warfare and ideas or ideologies, and offer new ways of thinking about the costs and consequences of war. In addition to its interdisciplinarity, the volume is distinctive in including chapters focused not only on Western and Central Europe but also the often-ignored European peripheries, such as the Baltics and the Russian frontier, Scandinavia, and the Habsburg-Ottoman borderlands of Southeastern Europe. As a whole, the volume offers readers interesting alternatives and threads for reconsidering the place and meaning of warfare within the larger history of early modern continental Europe. This book will be valuable for general readers, undergraduate and graduate students, and scholars interested in military, early modern, and European history.

Book excerpt: The first edition of The Thirty Years' War offered an unrivalled survey of a central period in European history. Drawing on a huge body of source material from different languages and countries throughout Europe, it provided a clear and comprehensive narrative and analytical account of the subject. It has established itself as the classic text with reviewers, students and the general reader. This second edition has been thoroughly revised to include the very latest research. The updated bibliographical information provides an invaluable resource, synthesising the major work in the field, in all languages, up to 1996. Written with great clarity and liveliness, the book brings alive the period in all its aspects. It covers the horrors of the war and the contorted politics of the period. It deals with all the major figures, including Wallerstein and Richelieu, Gustavus Adolphus and Tilly, the Winter King and the Habsburg emperors. For range and depth of coverage there is no other work like it. It has become the definitive book on the subject.
