Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General von Falkenhayn, who served as Chief of the German General Staff during the First World War, discusses in detail the decisions he and his colleagues in the military command took between 1914 and 1916. Writing with exacting detail and an appreciation for the conditions on the various fronts on which the German army fought, Falkenhayn is frank in his assessments of Germany's capacities, successes and failures. When the war commenced in 1914, he was all too aware that large swathes of German forces were unprepared, ill-equipped and ill-trained: adaptation to the realities of modern war had to be swift. The rapid descent of the Western Front into the stagnation of trench warfare, whereby both sides were locked in continual combat with little movement, is amply detailed. Accompanying Falkenhayn's detailed accounts of the war are several maps, which detail the shifting conditions in the various battlefronts. Changes in conflict owing to new technologies, such as the aeroplane and the submarine, are likewise discussed, alongside attempts at achieving a breakthrough to decisively turn the tide of war in Germany's favour. In all, Falkenhayn's recounting is valuable for its attention to detail and the privileged position of the author at the apex of the military command structure.

This volume concentrates on non-U.S. aspects of the conflict. Organized alphabetically, its more than 600 detailed entries offer information and insight on such subjects as the causes of the conflict, major battles and campaigns, weapons systems (including military aviation, chemical warfare, the submarine, and the tank), and the terms of the peace. Some 350 biographies provide information on the roles played in the conflict by generals, admirals, and civilian leaders. There are also biographies of individuals who were shaped by the war, such as Charles De Gaulle, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Joseph Stalin; essays on each of the countries involved in the conflict; new appraisals of such subjects as military medicine and artillery tactics; and essays on such diverse subjects as art, literature, and music in the war. Each entry has references for additional reading, and a subject index provides easy access. The volume is an excellent reference source for scholar and neophyte alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive and illuminating study of some of the most crucial campaigns on the Eastern Front during what was perhaps the most momentous year of World War I in that battleground. Turning Points: The Eastern Front in 1915 offers a well-researched and fascinating study of war in a distinct theater of operations and shows how it was impacted by diplomacy, coalition warfare, command, technology, and the environment in which it is conducted. In contrast to those on the Western Front, lines in the east in 1915 moved hundreds of miles. Although the work focuses more on the Central Powers, significant attention is also given to the Russians. The book follows the course of events on the Eastern Front during the critical year of 1915, proceeding chronologically from January 1915 to the end of active operations in October, with a brief mention of some action in December. In addition to the better-known campaigns in the Carpathians and Gorlice-Tarnów, the work covers lesser-known operations including the Second Battle of the Masurian Lakes, the Austro-Hungarian "Black-Yellow" offensive into eastern Galicia, and the German move into Lithuania. Naval action on the Baltic Sea is also covered.

Download or read book Ring of Steel written by Alexander Watson and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A prize-winning, magisterial history of World War I from the perspective of the defeated Central Powers For the Central Powers, the First World War started with high hopes for an easy victory. But those hopes soon deteriorated as Germany's attack on France failed, Austria-Hungary's armies suffered catastrophic losses, and Britain's ruthless blockade brought both nations to the brink of starvation. The Central powers were trapped in the Allies' ever-tightening Ring of Steel. In this compelling history, Alexander Watson retells the war from the perspective of its losers: not just the leaders in Berlin and Vienna, but the people of Central Europe. The war shattered their societies, destroyed their states, and imparted a poisonous legacy of bitterness and violence. A major reevaluation of the First World War, Ring of Steel is essential for anyone seeking to understand the last century of European history.
Book Synopsis The Troubled Alliance by : Gerard E. Silberstein
Download or read book The Troubled Alliance written by Gerard E. Silberstein and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On August 1, 1914, the German and Austro-Hungarian empires stood on the brink of the greatest war history had known. Their great need was for alliances that would provide manpower and defense of their borders. In only one direction could these be sought—the Balkan Peninsula. Yet disagreements between foreign officers and high commands increased the difficulty of establishing such alliances. Austrian caution continually clashed with German persistence, for the expansionist drives of the Balkan powers threatened the monarchy's own ambitions. The differences between the two allies were smoothed over in the case of Turkey and Bulgaria, but the ultimate diplomatic failure in Rumania produced much rancor. The author's examination of little known documents in the German and Austrian archives brings to light details of an often tortured relationship. The personalities of those who shaped the course of the war and the playing off of power against power are here clearly revealed.
