Lake St. Clair was first Visited, but the con ditions there being unfavorable on account of heavy storms, which made the water roily, investigations were renewed on Lake Erie, especially at Port Clinton and at Sandusky. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the State Commissioners of Fisheries, for the Year 1895 Large numbers of applications for wall-eyed pike were received and filled during the year, but by far the greater number of the fry were deposited in the waters of Lake Erie. The Commissioners are highly gratified by the action of the last Legislature in doing away with the close season for German carp. Thus permitting their capture at any time during the year. The Com missioners feel that a great mistake was made in the introduction of this fish, which however came well recommended, and at a time when fish culture was in an experimental stage. Experience has now shown the German carp to be a highly objectionable fish, and one creating great damage to other and better species. It has been proven to be a voracious spawn eater, far more so, in fact, even than the eel and sucker. It even devours large quantities of young fry, and unless something can be done to get them from our waters, there is danger that much damage will result. The Commissioners have decided to fill no future applications for German carp, and urge farmers and fish culturists generally to cease their propagation. The ponds formerly devoted to the culture of German carp in the hatching ponds will be used for the increase of other and American fishes. Book Synopsis It Can't Happen Here by : Sinclair Lewis
Download or read book It Can't Happen Here written by Sinclair Lewis and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-01-07 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The novel that foreshadowed Donald Trump’s authoritarian appeal.”—Salon It Can’t Happen Here is the only one of Sinclair Lewis’s later novels to match the power of Main Street, Babbitt, and Arrowsmith. A cautionary tale about the fragility of democracy, it is an alarming, eerily timeless look at how fascism could take hold in America. Written during the Great Depression, when the country was largely oblivious to Hitler’s aggression, it juxtaposes sharp political satire with the chillingly realistic rise of a president who becomes a dictator to save the nation from welfare cheats, sex, crime, and a liberal press. Called “a message to thinking Americans” by the Springfield Republican when it was published in 1935, It Can’t Happen Here is a shockingly prescient novel that remains as fresh and contemporary as today’s news. Includes an Introduction by Michael Meyer and an Afterword by Gary Scharnhorst

Download or read book Ignition! written by John Drury Clark and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-23 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This newly reissued debut book in the Rutgers University Press Classics Imprint is the story of the search for a rocket propellant which could be trusted to take man into space. This search was a hazardous enterprise carried out by rival labs who worked against the known laws of nature, with no guarantee of success or safety. Acclaimed scientist and sci-fi author John Drury Clark writes with irreverent and eyewitness immediacy about the development of the explosive fuels strong enough to negate the relentless restraints of gravity. The resulting volume is as much a memoir as a work of history, sharing a behind-the-scenes view of an enterprise which eventually took men to the moon, missiles to the planets, and satellites to outer space. A classic work in the history of science, and described as “a good book on rocket stuff…that’s a really fun one” by SpaceX founder Elon Musk, readers will want to get their hands on this influential classic, available for the first time in decades.

Download or read book Hiroshima written by John Hersey and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2020-06-23 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hiroshima is the story of six people—a clerk, a widowed seamstress, a physician, a Methodist minister, a young surgeon, and a German Catholic priest—who lived through the greatest single manmade disaster in history. In vivid and indelible prose, Pulitzer Prize–winner John Hersey traces the stories of these half-dozen individuals from 8:15 a.m. on August 6, 1945, when Hiroshima was destroyed by the first atomic bomb ever dropped on a city, through the hours and days that followed. Almost four decades after the original publication of this celebrated book, Hersey went back to Hiroshima in search of the people whose stories he had told, and his account of what he discovered is now the eloquent and moving final chapter of Hiroshima.
Download or read book Speedboat written by Renata Adler and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2013-03-19 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award, this is one of the defining books of the 1970s, an experimental novel about a young journalist trying to navigate life in America. When Speedboat burst on the scene in the late ’70s it was like nothing readers had encountered before. It seemed to disregard the rules of the novel, but it wore its unconventionality with ease. Reading it was a pleasure of a new, unexpected kind. Above all, there was its voice, ambivalent, curious, wry, the voice of Jen Fain, a journalist negotiating the fraught landscape of contemporary urban America. Party guests, taxi drivers, brownstone dwellers, professors, journalists, presidents, and debutantes fill these dispatches from the world as Jen finds it. A touchstone over the years for writers as different as David Foster Wallace and Elizabeth Hardwick, Speedboat returns to enthrall a new generation of readers.
