This book was released on 1976 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 19. The papers included in this volume were originally presented at the International Woollard Symposium held at the Kahala Hilton Hotel in Honolulu, Hawaii, December 8 through December 10, 1974. The symposium honored Professor George P. Woollard on the occasion of his 66th birthday. It was cosponsored by the University of Hawaii, where Professor Woollard is Director of the University of Hawaii's Institute of Geophysics, by the U.S. Geodynamics Committee, by the Inter-Union Commission on Geodynamics of the International Council of Scientific Unions, and by the following Sponsoring and Organizing Committee: Philip H. Abelson; L. Thomas Aldrich; Orson L. Anderson; William E. Bonini; Edward C. Bullard; Ramon R. Cabre; S.J.R.M. Demenitskaya; Charles L. Drake; John I. Ewing; Maurice Ewing (Deceased); Richard A. Geyer; Alberto A. Giesecke; Wytze Gorter (Chancellor, University of Hawaii at Manoa); Anton L. Hales; John Brackett Hersey; Everett Dale Jackson; Gordon A. Macdonald; Henry W. Menard, Jr.; Robert P. Lamar Worzel. The Organizing Committee set the theme and scope of the meeting: the symposium was to explore the edge of knowledge, in those fields of science that during the past decade have been the principal concern of Professor Woollard and his associates and students, of the Pacific Ocean basin and its margin. A Program Committee was charged with inviting papers from internationally known scientists, for the following sessions: Gravity and Geodesy Seismology Magnetism Marine Geology and Tectonics Volcanology and Petrology Tectonophysics.

Book Synopsis 50 Years of Ocean Discovery by : National Research Council
Download or read book 50 Years of Ocean Discovery written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-01-03 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the development of ocean sciences over the past 50 years, highlighting the contributions of the National Science Foundation (NSF) to the field's progress. Many of the individuals who participated in the exciting discoveries in biological oceanography, chemical oceanography, physical oceanography, and marine geology and geophysics describe in the book how the discoveries were made possible by combinations of insightful individuals, new technology, and in some cases, serendipity. In addition to describing the advance of ocean science, the book examines the institutional structures and technology that made the advances possible and presents visions of the field's future. This book is the first-ever documentation of the history of NSF's Division of Ocean Sciences, how the structure of the division evolved to its present form, and the individuals who have been responsible for ocean sciences at NSF as "rotators" and career staff over the past 50 years.

Book Synopsis Geoinformation by : Gottfried Konecny
Download or read book Geoinformation written by Gottfried Konecny and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-10-03 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surveying and mapping has recently undergone a transition: from discipline-oriented technologies, such as geodesy, surveying, photogrammetry and cartography, to the methodology-oriented integrated discipline of geoinformatics based on GPS positioning, remote sensing, digital photography and GIS for data manipulation and data output. This book presents the required basic background for remote sensing, digital photogrammetry and GIS in the new geoinformatics concept in which the different methodologies must be combined. For remote sensing, the basic fundamentals are the properties of electromagnetic radiation and their interaction with matter. This radiation is received by sensors and platforms in analogue or digital form, and is subject to image processing. In photogrammetry, the stereo-concept is used for the location of information in 3D. With the advent of high-resolution satellite systems in stereo, the theory of analytical photogrammetry restituting 2-D image information into 3D is of increasing importance, merging the remote sensing approach with that of photogrammetry. The result of the restitution is a direct input into geographical information systems in vector or in raster form. The fundamentals of these are described in detail, with an emphasis on global, regional and local applications. For data integration, a short introduction into the GPS Satellite positioning system is added. This textbook will appeal to a wide range of readers, from advanced undergraduates to all professionals in the growing field of geoinformation.
Book Synopsis Geoid Determination by : Fernando Sansò
Download or read book Geoid Determination written by Fernando Sansò and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-02-13 with total page 748 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will be based on the material of the lecture noties in several International Schools for the Determination and Use of the Geoid, organized by the International Geoid Serivice of the International Association of Geodesy. It consolidates, unifies, and streamlines this material in a unique way not covereed by the few other books that exist on this subjext. More specifically, the book presents (for the first time in a single volume) the theory and methodology of the most common technique used for precise determination of the geoid, including the computation of the marine geoid from satellite altimetry data. These are illustrated by specific examples and actual computations of local geoids. In addition, the book provides the fundamentals of estimating orthometric heights without spirit levelling, by properly combining a geoid with heights from GPS. Besides the geodectic and geophysical uses, this last application has made geoid computation methods very popular in recent years because the entire GPS and GIS user communities are interested in estimating geoid undulations in order to convert GPS heights to physically meaningful orthometric heights (elevations above mean sea level). The overall purpose of the book is, therefore, to provide the user community (academics, graduate students, geophysicists, engineers, oceanographers, GIS and GPS users, researchers) with a self-contained textbook, which will supply them with the complete roadmap of estimating geoid undulations, from the theoretical definitions and formulas to the available numerical methods and their implementation and the test in practice.

Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geodynamics Series, Volume 9. After a decade of intense and productive scientific cooperation between geologists, geophysicists and geochemists the International Geodynamics Program formally ended on July 31, 1980. The scientific accomplishments in more than seventy scientific reports and in this series of Final Report volumes. The concept of the Geodynamics Program, as a natural successor to the Upper Mantle Project, developed during 1970 and 1971. The International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) and the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) then sought support for the new program from the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU). As a result the Inter-Union Commission on Geodynamics was established by ICSU to manage the International Geodynamics Program.
