Book Synopsis Geology of the Rhins of Galloway District by : P. Stone
Download or read book Geology of the Rhins of Galloway District written by P. Stone and published by Stationery Office Books (TSO). This book was released on 1995 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rhins of Galloway district lies in the south-west of Scotland and marks the termination of the Southern Uplands against the North Channel. This memoir and the accompanying 1:50 000 solid geology map provide detailed subdivision of the Ordovician and Silurian turbidite strata. The conclusions are of significance to the Southern Uplands terrane as a whole and also to its equivalents in Ireland and maritime Canada. Other major sections of the memoir discuss the syn- and post-tectonic intrusive rocks, the development of the late Palaeozoic Stranraer half-graben and the regional structural framework as deduced from geophysical data.
Book Synopsis The Geology of Scotland, 4th edition by : N. H. Trewin
Download or read book The Geology of Scotland, 4th edition written by N. H. Trewin and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2003-02-24 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 4th edition of The Geology of Scotland is greatly expanded from the previous edition with 34 authors contributing to 20 chapters. A new format has been adopted to provide a different perspective on the geology of Scotland. A brief introduction is followed by a chapter outlining some of the important historical aspects that in the 19th century placed Scottish geologists in the forefront of a new science. Scotland is constructed from a number of terranes that finally combined in roughly their present positions prior to about 410 million years ago. Thus the geology of each terrane is described up the time of amalgamation, providing chapters on the Southern Uplands, Midland Valley, Highlands, Grampian and Hebridean terranes. At the end of this section, a brief synthesis summarizes the events that resulted in the amalgamation of the various terranes into the present configuration. Traditional practice is followed in the description of the Old Red Sandstone, Carboniferous, Permo-Trias, Jurassic, Cretaceous, tertiary and Quaternary strata. A separate chapter covers Tertiary igneous rocks. An attempt is made to tell the story of the geological evolution of Scotland, rather than catalogue all areas and formations. Priority is given to the onshore geology, encouraging the reader to go into the field and visit some of the world-class geology on show in Scotland. The chapters are broadly-based, attempting to integrate the sedimentary and igneous histories, and summarize changes in palaeogeography and palaeoenvironments. Economic aspects are covered with chapters on Metalliferous Minerals, Bulk Resources, Coal and Hydrocarbons. A new departure is the chapter on aspects of Environmental Geology and sustainability. Additionally, this publication contains a colour section of 32 plates, illustrating aspects of Scottish Geology, as well as a coloured geological map of Scotland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The district described in this memoir lies in the middle of the Scottish southern uplands and includes parts of Kirkcudbrightshire and Dumfriesshire. It is covered by Sheets 9W and 9E of the 1:50 000 geological map series for Scotland. The district is rural and sparsely populated, with the principal town being Dumfries. This memoir is the first geological survey description of this district since the original sheet explanation was published in 1877.

Download or read book Petroleum Source Rocks written by Barry J. Katz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades there has been increased interest in the availability of hydrocarbon charge through a better understanding of petroleum geochemistry and the identification and characterization of petroleum source rocks. These rocks are geochemically unique and form under specific sets of circumstances. This book brings together both geologic and geochemical data from fifteen petroleum source rocks, ranging in age from Devonian to Eocene, that would otherwise be widely dispersed in the literature or available only in proprietary corporate databases. Much of this information, presented in either a tabular or graphic fashion, provides the petroleum explorationist and the geochemist with a framework to establish relationships among various geochemical indices and depositional settings.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this account, data collected from seismic reflection surveys have been integrated with geological information to produce a series of structure-contour and preserved-thickness maps illustrating the evolution and present day structure of the Northumberland Solway Basin and adjacent areas. Seismic reflection profiling methods are of particular importance to the oil industry and the application of these and other basin analysis techniques to the sedimentary basins of the United Kingdom has significantly increased the economic resources of the nation and greatly enhanced knowledge of the structure and geological evolution of both the land area and of the adjoining continental shelf.
Book Synopsis Geology of the Brent Group by : A. C. Morton
Download or read book Geology of the Brent Group written by A. C. Morton and published by Geological Society Publishing House. This book was released on 1992 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Middle Jurassic Brent Group sediments, and their correlatives on the Norwegian Shelf are, in economic terms, the most important hydrocarbon reservoir in NW Europe. In 1971 the Brent Field was discovered by Shell/Esso and tested in 1972 with 1.8 billion barrels of recoverable oil. By 1988 discovered Brent hydrocarbons comprised some 490f the UK's recoverable reserves, totalling 22.5 billion barrels of oil equivalent. Now that the UK Brent Province has reached maturity, this book provides a comprehensive review of the geology and petroleum geology of one of the world's major petroleum reservoirs. With the contents covering exploration history, structural evolution, sequence stratigraphy, sedimentology, diagenests, palynology, hydrocarbon generation and migration, and petrophysics, the book will be of interest to geoscientists in many fields especially petroleum geologists, sedimentologists, petrophysicists and biostratigraphers.
Download or read book Huxley at Work written by Michael Collie and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 1991-12 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The previously unpublished correspondence of T.H.Huxley with Rev. George Gordon is an important new addition to the literature on Huxley and Victorian science. The correspondence is self-contained and wholely scientific, concerning the unexpected discovery of reptilian fossils and footprints near Elgin, and relates to a most important aspect of Huxley's career: defining the relationship between geology and palaentology. The letters are complemented by an incisive analysis of Huxley's work as a palaentologist and the development of his views on evolution.
