Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following their recognition by GUmbel (1874), lamprophyres were treated for an entire century as little more than obscure curiosities. Although this situation has changed recently, with a flowering of publications and active workers, lamprophyres remain almost the only group of igneous rocks which have not yet received attention in a dedicated monograph. In five exploratory reviews (1977-1987), the writer aimed to set out what was known about these rocks. The lUGS Subcommission on igneous rock systematics had meanwhile presented its nomenclatural framework (Streckeisen 1979). All this has now been overtaken by a recent explosion of interest, epitomized not least by lamprophyres' greater prominence in the 4th International Kimberlite Conference Proceedings. More data have become available since 1985 than over the entire previous century, and it is obviously impossible for such an extraordinary outpouring to be fully reviewed in this first, preliminary book. At the risk of dissatisfying some readers, therefore, this book concentrates on factual matters, and on a broad overview rather than minutiae. Because not even a world map of known lamprophyres was previously available, almost half the book is deliberately taken up by the first global lamprophyre compilation, and its commensurately extensive Bibliography. Such a compendium of largely objective information is believed to be of more immediate interest and lasting value than a premature pottage of petrogenetic polemic. Chapters 1-7 bring previous studies up to date, and concentrate on factual information.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 4th edition of The Geology of Scotland is greatly expanded from the previous edition with 34 authors contributing to 20 chapters. A new format has been adopted to provide a different perspective on the geology of Scotland. A brief introduction is followed by a chapter outlining some of the important historical aspects that in the 19th century placed Scottish geologists in the forefront of a new science. Scotland is constructed from a number of terranes that finally combined in roughly their present positions prior to about 410 million years ago. Thus the geology of each terrane is described up the time of amalgamation, providing chapters on the Southern Uplands, Midland Valley, Highlands, Grampian and Hebridean terranes. At the end of this section, a brief synthesis summarizes the events that resulted in the amalgamation of the various terranes into the present configuration. Traditional practice is followed in the description of the Old Red Sandstone, Carboniferous, Permo-Trias, Jurassic, Cretaceous, tertiary and Quaternary strata. A separate chapter covers Tertiary igneous rocks. An attempt is made to tell the story of the geological evolution of Scotland, rather than catalogue all areas and formations. Priority is given to the onshore geology, encouraging the reader to go into the field and visit some of the world-class geology on show in Scotland. The chapters are broadly-based, attempting to integrate the sedimentary and igneous histories, and summarize changes in palaeogeography and palaeoenvironments. Economic aspects are covered with chapters on Metalliferous Minerals, Bulk Resources, Coal and Hydrocarbons. A new departure is the chapter on aspects of Environmental Geology and sustainability. Additionally, this publication contains a colour section of 32 plates, illustrating aspects of Scottish Geology, as well as a coloured geological map of Scotland.

Book excerpt: "Scottish Woodland History relates the complex history of the Scottish native woodlands--both the old Caledonian pine forests and the deciduous woods--and how people have used and misused them over the centuries. The book illustrates the extraordinary variety and vibrancy of woodland research carried on in Scotland today, by all manner of people--ranging from practicing ecologists, foresters and conservations to academic archaeologists, palynologists and historians. "Scottish Woodland History reflects all of their concerns, but is unified by the contributors' love for the ancient woods of Scotland.

Book excerpt: In this account, data collected from seismic reflection surveys have been integrated with geological information to produce a series of structure-contour and preserved-thickness maps illustrating the evolution and present day structure of the Northumberland Solway Basin and adjacent areas. Seismic reflection profiling methods are of particular importance to the oil industry and the application of these and other basin analysis techniques to the sedimentary basins of the United Kingdom has significantly increased the economic resources of the nation and greatly enhanced knowledge of the structure and geological evolution of both the land area and of the adjoining continental shelf.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Middle Jurassic Brent Group sediments, and their correlatives on the Norwegian Shelf are, in economic terms, the most important hydrocarbon reservoir in NW Europe. In 1971 the Brent Field was discovered by Shell/Esso and tested in 1972 with 1.8 billion barrels of recoverable oil. By 1988 discovered Brent hydrocarbons comprised some 490f the UK's recoverable reserves, totalling 22.5 billion barrels of oil equivalent. Now that the UK Brent Province has reached maturity, this book provides a comprehensive review of the geology and petroleum geology of one of the world's major petroleum reservoirs. With the contents covering exploration history, structural evolution, sequence stratigraphy, sedimentology, diagenests, palynology, hydrocarbon generation and migration, and petrophysics, the book will be of interest to geoscientists in many fields especially petroleum geologists, sedimentologists, petrophysicists and biostratigraphers.

Book excerpt: The previously unpublished correspondence of T.H.Huxley with Rev. George Gordon is an important new addition to the literature on Huxley and Victorian science. The correspondence is self-contained and wholely scientific, concerning the unexpected discovery of reptilian fossils and footprints near Elgin, and relates to a most important aspect of Huxley's career: defining the relationship between geology and palaentology. The letters are complemented by an incisive analysis of Huxley's work as a palaentologist and the development of his views on evolution.
