Download or read book Memoirs of the Geological Survey, England and Wales written by Clement Reid and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the Geological Survey, England and Wales: The Geology of the Country Around Dorchester The district described in the present Memoir was originally mapped for the Geological Survey by the late H. W. Bristow and was included in Sheets 15, 16, 17 and 18 of the Geological Survey Map of England published between the years 1850 and 1856. In these maps the superficial deposits were not repte sented. Recently (1894 - 8) the ground has been re-surveyed on maps of the scale of six inches to one mile by Mr. Clement Reid, except the south-west corner of the map previously te-mapped by Mr. A. Strahan and the north-west corner re-mapped by Mr. J ukes-browne: The superficial deposits have now been surveyed and they are shown upon the map, only one edition of which is published. The country around Dorchester has not attracted much attention from' geologists, for it is an inland area, not exhibiting clear natural sections and yielding few fossils that cannot more conveniently be obtained in adjoining districts. Of the few papers that refer to it, nearly all treat it as an outlying part of a larger region. References to these papers will be found in the Geological Bibliography of Dorset, published last year in the Memoir on the Geology of Purbeck. Prestwich, the Rev. Osmond Fisher, and Dr. Charles Barrois are almost the only writers who have much to say about the district, for no Memoir was published to accompany the original maps of the Geological Survey. The present explanation has been prepared by Mr. Reid. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geology of the Country Near Sidmouth and Lyme Regis For the preparation of the second edition of this memoir we are indebted to Mr. H. B. Woodward, who has been kind enough to undertake entire responsibility for the work and to carry it out since his retirement from the Geological Survey. Though no revision of the map has been made, some additional information has been incorporated in the memoir, partly as a result of further visits to Lyme Regis by Mr. Woodward. Some notes and sug gestions also have been made by Messrs. Ussher and J ukes-browne in the chapters on the New Red Sandstone Series and Cretaceous Rocks respectively. In the preface to the 1st Edition 1833 was mentioned as the probable date of publication of the Old Series one-inch Sheets 21 and 22, the original Geological Survey Maps of the From information since gathered by Mr. Woodward and published in the Summary of Progress for 1907 (p. 159) it is now evident that those maps were not published till 1834. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geology of the Country Around Torquay (Explanation of Sheet 350) The district is one of exceptional difficulty, owing to the want of persistence in well marked lithological horizons and to stratigraphical complications of a most intricate character due to folding and faulting. Detailed work was therefore necessary before even the broader tectonic features could be made out. This work has, however, met with its reward. The three main divisions of the Devonian formation have not only been recognised, but their boundaries have been ascertained with at least approximate accuracy, and the rocks of the Torquay area have been bro'ught into line with their continental equivalents; Many workers have contributed to this result, and a general account of the extensive literature relating to the geology of the district is given in the introduction. Download or read book The Geology of the Country Around Eastbourne written by Clement Reid and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geology of the Country Around Eastbourne: Explanation of Sheet 334 This formation occupies about a square mile of the area north of Eastbourne, and is also exposed on the foreshore between Eastbourne and Beachy Head. The ledges on the foreshore represent, however, only some 50 feet of the higher beds, the lower de osits north of Splash Point being hid en under the beach. 0 good inland sections are to be seen, though occa sional excavations show Gault at St. Anthony's Hill, Horsey, and Hydneye. Our knowledge of the formation within the East bourne map must, therefore, be derived from the trial-boring at the Waterworks, and from the up er beds exposed on the greatly disturbed foreshore below big -water mark. A new format places all the chapters in approximately temporal order. Both offshore and economic geology now form an integral part of appropriate chapters.
