T.Jackson's State Report, 1844; in the Geology of the State of Vermont, 1861; in the Annual and Final Reports of the State Survey, 1868-1878; a Paper upon the Helderberg of New Hampshire, etc., in the American Journal of Science, 1874; an Atlas of the State of New Hampshire, by Comstock and Kline, 1877; Geological Sections across New Hampshire and Vermont, in the State Agricultural Report for 1884; and lastly, a notice of the Discovery of Trilobites, by T.Nelson Dale, in a Canadian publication. The present sketch is based upon the facts contained in these publications, supplemented by several visits made subsequently for the purpose of gaining more precise information. New facts have been discovered at each visit, and the rapid progress of the science necessitates a rearrangement of the conclusions not anticipated. It is to bo regretted that our knowledge is still so incomplete. The township is traversed by two rivers,- the Connecticut and the Ammonoosuc. The first constitutes the boundary on the northwest side, more than thirteen miles long. The principal portion of the "Fifteen Miles Falls" is situated within the limits of Littleton. The head is in Dalton, to the north, 830 feet above the sea, and the foot in Monroe, near the mouth of the Passumpsic, 460 feet above the sea, the total fall being 370 feet. Of this amount, 300 feet lie within the town limits. With such a great descent, the river is narrow and the shores rocky, with an absence of the intervales so abundant in both the upper and lower sections of the river. These features result from the geological conformation. A range of mountains has been cut across by the river. It is the Gardner Mountain range, 2000 feet high, coming northerly through Bath, Lyman, and Monroe, and falling rapidly to the water level in West Littleton, to rise again in Waterford, Vt. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Littleton, New Hampshire, Vol. 1 of 3: Annals Little, the proprietor of Littleton, conceived a purpose of writ ing a history of the town in 1855. He gathered material, inter viewing aged people familiar with the early settlement, and shortly before his death, in 1863, had put this material in shape for publication. Had he lived to partly execute his purpose, the town would have possessed an authentic history of great value. His manuscripts would have made a volume of about fifty pages of this work. Two of its chapters, those on Proprietary Meetings and Surveys, appear as he prepared them. The addition of much new material rendered it impossible to use the remainder in the form in which it was left. In 1876, by vote of the town, Harry Bingham, John Farr, and James J. Barrett were made a committee to procure the Moore manuscripts and to consider and report upon the advisability of the preparation and publication of a town history. Nothing came of this for several years. In 1880 John M. Mitchell suggested to the writer that he undertake the work of collecting material and preparing a history of the town. The proposition was attractive, and was followed. In 1883 Albert S. Batchellor brought the matter before the town at its March meeting, and a committee consisting of George Farr, Albert S. Batchellor, Charles F. Eastman, Edward Kilburn, and James R. Jackson, was chosen to take the matter in hand, and was given full powers. They came into possession of the Moore manu scripts as a gift from the heirs, and entered upon the work of gathering material from all known sources of information for a history of the town from 1770 to the close of 1903. The first deposits contain few, if any, remains of organized beings, either animal or vegetable. If any were originally contained in those rocks, their forms have been obliterated by the agency of heat, originating from the nether rocks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geology of New Hampshire: A Report Comprising the Results of Explorations Ordered by the Legislature The theory of Mr. Croll, * which supposes that during the long period of great eccentricity glacial and warm inter-glacial epochs succeeded each other in cycles of years, does not seem to be sustained so fully as we should expect by evidence of such warm intervals, which he thinks even in arctic latitudes would be nearly free from ice and snow. A consideration of what we have to explain by the agency of ice, and of the mode in which these results are likely to have been produced, seems to point to a very long, continuous period of glacial action, with times of retreat and advance, but not apparently of complete departure and return of a continental ice-sheet. By other writers the glacial climate is be lieved to have been principally caused by a different distribution and elevation of the land, attended with changes in the direction of oceanic currents. Even if a supposed combination of such conditions could be shown to be adequate to produce the ice-sheet, it seems more reasonable to attribute its origin to an astronomical cause, which we know to have existed, with a tendency to bring about these results. AS very intense cold is not required for the accumulation and preservation of snow and ice, may not the continually cool climate, when winter occurred in peri helion during the period of great eccentricity, have kept the ice-sheet which was already formed from being melted? The rare testimony of any retreat and subsequent advance of the ice during the glacial period in America, with the vast results which were accomplished in this time, favor this view. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Annual Report on the Geology of the State of New Hampshire, 1841 Geological Surveys are called for by the general increase of knowledge among men; and that such a call is made, let us adduce in testimony the fact that no less than twenty among the twenty-six States of the Union have either made such Surveys or have them now in progress. This fact is a most striking commentary on the general progress of intelligence throughout the country, and the most decisive evidence of the general belief in the utility of such explorations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geology of New Hampshire, Vol. 2: A Report Comprising the Results of Explorations Ordered by the Legislature; Stratigraphical Geology Nearly two years and a half have been occupied in the compilation and printing of this volume. Material additions to our knowledge of the rocks, consisting of two summers' field-work, have often corrected, improved, and added to the statements already printed. This has been the most marked in the White Mountain district. Mr. Huntington has performed an excellent work, in his chapter upon the C065 and western Merrimack districts, partien larly in distinguishing the coarse granite belt and the fine-grained division of the Bethlehem gneiss, the first being of practical consequence in determin ing the best places to work mica quarries. We have constantly endeavored to state all facts in the briefest possible language and, in consequence of the immense number of observations recorded, the last four chapters have been much abbreviated. In spite of all our efforts, the subjects of Surface Geol ogy, Economics, Mineralogy, and Lithology are crowded out into a third volume, nearly a hundred pages of which are already printed. Mr. Warren Upham has undertaken the description of the Modified Drift; and Mr. Geo. W. Hawes will discuss Mineralogy and Lithology. Both these treatises will be of rare value. We have undertaken the collection of several sets of speci mens illustrating our Lithology, each consisting of two hundred and fifty varieties. These may be found at the college museum, at the state house, and at the normal school. Other sets are on hand for exchange or sale.
