Book Synopsis Incentives to Pander by : Nathan M. Jensen
Download or read book Incentives to Pander written by Nathan M. Jensen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Policies targeting individual companies for economic development incentives, such as tax holidays and abatements, are generally seen as inefficient, economically costly, and distortionary. Despite this evidence, politicians still choose to use these policies to claim credit for attracting investment. Thus, while fiscal incentives are economically inefficient, they pose an effective pandering strategy for politicians. Using original surveys of voters in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, as well as data on incentive use by politicians in the US, Vietnam and Russia, this book provides compelling evidence for the use of fiscal incentives for political gain and shows how such pandering appears to be associated with growing economic inequality. As national and subnational governments surrender valuable tax revenue to attract businesses in the vain hope of long-term economic growth, they are left with fiscal shortfalls that have been filled through regressive sales taxes, police fines and penalties, and cuts to public education.
Book Synopsis Economic Incentives for Marine and Coastal Conservation by : Essam Yassin Mohammed
Download or read book Economic Incentives for Marine and Coastal Conservation written by Essam Yassin Mohammed and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine and coastal resources provide millions of people with their livelihoods, such as fishing and tourism, and a range of critical additional ‘ecosystem services’, from biodiversity and culture to carbon storage and flood protection. Yet across the world, these resources are fast-diminishing under the weight of pollution, land clearance, coastal development, overfishing, natural disasters and climate change. This book shows how economic instruments can be used to incentivize the conservation of marine and coastal resources. It is shown that traditional approaches to halt the decline focus on regulating against destructive practices, but to little effect. A more successful strategy could be to establish schemes such as payments for ecosystem services (PES), or incorporate an element of financial incentives into existing regulatory mechanisms. Examples, both terrestrial and marine, from across the world suggest that PES can work to protect both livelihoods and environments. But to succeed, it is shown that these schemes must be underpinned by robust research, clear property rights, sound governance structures, equitable benefit sharing, and sustainable finance. Case studies are included from south and east Asia, Latin America, Africa and Australia. The book explores the prospects and challenges, and draws lessons from PES and PES-like programmes from across the globe.
Book Synopsis Institutions, Incentives and Communication in Economic Geography by : Michael Storper
Download or read book Institutions, Incentives and Communication in Economic Geography written by Michael Storper and published by Franz Steiner Verlag. This book was released on 2004 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The author presents a challenging perspective on two key issues within contemporary economic and geographical debate. In his first lecture, the author reconsiders some of the foundations of comparative economics and institutionalism in an analysis of the "societal" and "communitarian" bases of social and economic development. Arguing that the interaction between society and community defines critical incentives for actors, the author suggests a context-sensitive sociological framework for the institutional analysis of economic development. The second lecture focuses on urban economics and argues that existing models of urban concentrations are incomplete unless grounded in a more precise understanding of the most fundamental aspect of proximity, face-to-face contact." -- BACK COVER.

Book Synopsis Strategic Coupling by : Henry Wai-chung Yeung
Download or read book Strategic Coupling written by Henry Wai-chung Yeung and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-24 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Strategic Coupling, Henry Wai-chung Yeung examines economic development and state-firm relations in East Asia, focusing in particular on South Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore. As a result of the massive changes of the last twenty-five years, new explanations must be found for the economic success and industrial transformation in the region. State-assisted startups and incubator firms in East Asia have become major players in the manufacture of products with a global reach: Taiwan’s Hon Hai Precision has assembled more than 500 million iPhones, for instance, and South Korea’s Samsung provides the iPhone’s semiconductor chips and retina displays. Drawing on extensive interviews with top executives and senior government officials, Yeung argues that since the late 1980s, many East Asian firms have outgrown their home states, and are no longer dependent on state support; as a result the developmental state has lost much of its capacity to steer and direct industrialization. We cannot read the performance of national firms as a direct outcome of state action. Yeung calls for a thorough renovation of the still-dominant view that states are the primary engine of industrial transformation. He stresses action by national firms and traces various global production networks to incorporate both firm-specific activities and the international political economy. He identifies two sets of dynamics in these national-global articulations known as strategic coupling: coevolution in the confluence of state, firm, and global production networks, and the various strategies pursued by East Asian firms to attain competitive positions in the global marketplace.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to the Geography of Tourism by : Velvet Nelson
Download or read book An Introduction to the Geography of Tourism written by Velvet Nelson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-03-03 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tourism is an astonishingly complex phenomenon that is becoming an ever-greater part of life in today’s global world. This clear and engaging text introduces undergraduate students to this vast and diverse subject through the lens of geography, the only field with the breadth to consider all of the aspects, activities, and perspectives that constitute tourism. Indeed, geography and tourism have always been interconnected, and Velvet Nelson reinforces the relationship between them by using both human and physical geography to interpret all facets of tourism—economic, social, and environmental. She shows how geography provides the tools and concepts to consider both the positive and negative factors that affect tourists and destinations as well as the effects tourism has on both peoples and places. Her real-world case studies, based both on research and on the experiences of tourists themselves, vividly illustrate key issues. This comprehensive, thematically organized introduction will enhance students’ understanding of geographic concepts and how they can be used as a way of viewing and understanding the world.

Book Synopsis Spending to Win by : Stephanie J. Rickard
Download or read book Spending to Win written by Stephanie J. Rickard and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governments in some democracies target economic policies, like industrial subsidies, to small groups at the expense of many. Why do some governments redistribute more narrowly than others? Their willingness to selectively target economic benefits, like subsidies to businesses, depends on the way politicians are elected and the geographic distribution of economic activities. Based on interviews with government ministers and bureaucrats, as well as parliamentary records, industry publications, local media coverage, and new quantitative data, Spending to Win: Political Institutions, Economic Geography, and Government Subsidies demonstrates that government policy-making can be explained by the combination of electoral institutions and economic geography. Specifically, it shows how institutions interact with economic geography to influence countries' economic policies and international economic relations. Identical institutions have wide-ranging effects depending on the context in which they operate. No single institution is a panacea for issues, such as income inequality, international economic conflict, or minority representation.

Book Synopsis The Geography of Underdevelopment by : Dean Forbes
Download or read book The Geography of Underdevelopment written by Dean Forbes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-11-26 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1984, this title discusses the emergence of both the orthodox and political economy based approaches to underdevelopment in geography , critically assessing their strengths and weaknesses, and showing the relationship between intellectual developments and changing material conditions. The work is primarily concerned with theories, though it does contain much empirical material drawn from throughout the Third World. The book examines the emergence of theories of development historically and considers the various contemporary theoretical ‘schools’, both Marxist and non-Marxist. It goes on to consider four aspects of development which are of particular interest to geographers, namely the world economy, regional imbalances, the human-nature theme and the analysis of urban space, and concludes by suggesting some directions for future research.
