Book Synopsis Planktic Foraminifers in the Modern Ocean by : Ralf Schiebel
Download or read book Planktic Foraminifers in the Modern Ocean written by Ralf Schiebel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-24 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of the taxonomy, biology, sedimentation, and carbonate geochemistry of modern species. Students, early career and advanced scientists alike will profit from a broad synthesis of the current understanding of planktic foraminifers as an ecological indicator, biogeochemical factories, and proxies in paleoceanography. The classification of modern species is amply illustrated with electron and light microscope images of morphotypes, addresses the state-of-the-art of molecular genetics of species, and provides a detailed guide for any laboratory analyses. The biology of planktic foraminifers is extensively discussed in chapters dedicated to the cellular ultrastructure, nutrition, symbionts, reproduction, ontogeny, and test architecture. Building on the biological prerequisites, the distribution of planktic foraminifers is discussed at regional to global scale. The geochemistry and sedimentation of tests are considered in relation to the ecology of the living animal. In the final chapter, which examines the most common methods in planktic foraminifer research, hands-on information is provided on sampling, processing and analyzing samples in the laboratory, as well as selected established methods for data interpretation. The various topics discussed in this book are aimed at the application of planktic foraminifers as sensitive indicators of the changing climate and marine environment.
Book Synopsis Biological Calcification: Cellular and Molecular Aspects by : Harald Schraer
Download or read book Biological Calcification: Cellular and Molecular Aspects written by Harald Schraer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deposition of calcium-containing salts is a widespread phenomenon in both the plant and animal kingdoms. Its occurrence suggests a generalized biological adaptation to environments rich in calcium. Indeed, the Archaean ocean was rich in calcium carbonate, and traces of ancient organisms have been found in lime stones estimated to be about 2. 7 billion years old. The fundamental nature of biological calcification makes it a subject of interest not only to the student of calcium metabolism and skeletal physiology, but also to biologists in general. As in many areas of biological science recent progress in this field has been rapid, and no attempt was made here to cover all the biological systems in which calcifica tion is an important facet of the organisms' method of operation. Calcification is approached in this volume at the levels of the cellular sites and molecular mechan isms that are involved in this process. The ultrastructural and chemical features of the cells and their products which are associated with calcification are empha sized in several chapters. The editor, in inviting contributions from authors, in tended that collectively the chapters should convey a sense of the ubiquitous and essential nature of the role of calcification in several phyla of the plant and animal kingdoms. The researchers were biochemists, physical chemists, cell biologists and physiologists; some represented medicine and dentistry; all were interested in calcification.

Download or read book The Gulf of Aqaba written by Zeev Reiss and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-12-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reconstruction of ancient marine environments is an important task of the Earth Sciences, of great interest to geology, pure and applied, to oceanography and climatology, as well as to such fields as ecology and evolution. In principle, such reconstructions are based on the actualistic approach of "the present is the key to the past." Since the deciphering of past environmental changes, either nat ural or man-made, has considerable bearing on planning, the past may provide a key to the future. Paleoenvironmental interpretations in the marine realm are based to a great extent on assemblages of fossils recovered from ancient sediments in outcrops and from land-based or submarine drillings. Observable lateral sequences of assemblages in contemporaneous strata, the known or assumed functional or adaptive significance of preserved skeletal struc tures, as well as their evolution through time and space, provide by themselves indications of ancient environmental settings. In some cases even present-day eco logical considerations may be derived from analysis of fossils.
Book Synopsis Colour Alteration, Thermal Maturity, and Burial Diagenesis in Fossil Foraminifers by : D. H. McNeil
Download or read book Colour Alteration, Thermal Maturity, and Burial Diagenesis in Fossil Foraminifers written by D. H. McNeil and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal maturity studies are an integral part of sedimentary basin analysis and hydrocarbon exploration. This report introduces new methods for assessing thermal maturity, based on colour and mineralogical changes in foraminifers, microfossils that are biostratigraphically important elements in marine sedimentary sequences. The methods and techniques presented are based on studies conducted in the Beaufort-Mackenzie basin. The report establishes an index consisting of ten categories, called the foraminiferal coloration index (FCI). The study indicates the sensitivity of the FCI at different levels of maturation, the influence of pore fluids in overpressured zones on the retarding of the FCI, and the sensitivity of the FCI to heating rate. Mineral changes in tests of both agglutinated and calcareous benthic foraminifers are also explained.
Book Synopsis Biology of Invertebrate and Lower Vertebrate Collagens by : A. Bairati
Download or read book Biology of Invertebrate and Lower Vertebrate Collagens written by A. Bairati and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge in the field of the biology of the extracellular matrix, and in particular of collagen, has made considerable progress over the last ten years, especially in mammals, birds and ln man with respect to very important applied medical aspects. Basic knowledge in the animal kingdom overall has increased more slowly and haphazardly. We, therefore, considered it useful to organize a meeting specifically devoted to the study of the invertebrate and lower vertebrate collagens. The NATO Scientific Division financed an Advanced Research Workshop aimed at bringing together experts qualified in collagen biology (with morphological, biochemical and genetic specialization) with researchers who are currently studying collagenous tissues of invertebrates and lower vertebrates. The Medical-Biology Committee of the CNR-Rome and the University of Milan also supplied interest and support for the organization of this Meeting. The format of the workshop consisted in: 1) main lectures on the most recent aspects of collagen biology; 2) minireviews on the current knowledge of collagenous tissues in the various invertebrate phyla and in fish; 3) contributed papers on particular aspects of research in specific fields; 4) workshops on the methodology of studying collagen. As we had intended, the Workshop gave a comprehensive overview of acquired knowledge and of the present state of research actlvlty. It permitted wide interdisciplinary discussion, enabling collabora tions to be established and new research themes to be chosen. This volume contains the text of all the contributions presented at the Meeting, including posters.
