Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macrolichens are not necessarily large lichens. Instead, the term has been used traditionally for lichens other than crustose types, i.e. scaly, leafy or shrubby lichens, usually with discrete organs of attachment to the substratum; in other words, distinctly three-dimensional, in contrast to their closely appressed or immersed, two-dimensional relatives. This key to the genera of Australian macrolichens follows recently published guides to apothecial crusts and pyrenocarps. It covers all 135 genera of macrolichens known to occur in Australia, and illustrates two-thirds of them in full color. To ease identification, it uses mostly traits that are visible with the naked eye or a 10× hand lens, and for all genera it adds information on habitat, distribution within Australia, and literature references.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 55 contains an account of the largest family of lichens in Australia, the Parmeliaceae. This family, familiar to most people as the common grey or brown to yellowish green foliose lichens of rocks, soil and bark, has about 60 genera and 1000 species worldwide. Thirty-one genera and 395 species are recorded from Australia. The book has keys for identification of genera and species. Each species is fully described, with bibliographic information, a full Australian synonymy, notes on habitat and distribution, and a summary of its chemistry. A distribution map is provided for each taxon and many species are illustrated in colour. An innovation in this volume is the inclusion of a synoptic key to the genera. This volume provides an excellent modern account of a difficult family

The book includes a glossary illustrated with photographs by Sylvia Duran Sharnoff and Stephen Sharnoff and drawings by Susan Laurie-Bourque, all from the original book. The revised keys are an indispensable identification tool for botanists, students, scientists, and enthusiasts alike.--COVER.

Elix 1982-1994) as well as someadditional species. In addition to the overall images, photographs ofselected stained and unstained sections, spores and HPTLC-plates areincluded. The goal was to make images of these lichenological treas-ures available to a wider circle of interested people. We hope that theimages will complement the literature and aid in the determination ofAustralasian lichen species.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the interaction of lichens with their substrate, environment and their biogeographic effects. In seventeen chapters thirty-eight authors present recent findings and developments in systematics, biodiversity, floristic studies and ecology, as well as newly described taxa, and keys to the identification of Caloplaca and xanthorioid lichens. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of several groups and genera are presented, resulting in an improved systematics of, for example, Caloplaca, Cladonia, Collema and xanthorioid lichens. The genera Arthonia and Usnea in Greece (with key) are reviewed. The volume is dedicated to Prof. Hans Martin Jahns on the occasion of his 70th birthday, featuring papers on some of his favourite fields of research, among them lichen interactions with their substrate and environment and lichen biogeography. A brief biography of Jahns, highlighting his contributions to lichenology, is included in the chapter on the nine Presidents of the International Association for Lichenology. Jahns played an important role during the past 40 years with his highly influential book, co-authored by Aino Henssen, entitled Lichenes. Eine Einführung in die Flechtenkunde. He is well-known for his extensive work and numerous publications on lichen morphology and ontogeny, particularly the development of fruiting bodies in different genera.

Detailed information is provided on the morphology, including the genitalia of both sexes, and up-to-date data on the distribution, biology and larval food plants of the species referred to each genus. A list of the species assigned to each genus is given, with full synonymy, references to the original descriptions, label data and repository of the primary type, lectotype designations, and abbreviated distribution data. Illustrations of the adults, wing venation, and male and female genitalia of the type species are included, as well as of the heads and eggs of representative genera. A key to genera is also provided.

Book excerpt: Numerous taxonomic revisions and a substantial amount of additional floristic information have become available since the publication of Streimann & Curnow's Catalogue of Mosses of Australia and its External Territories in 1989. Monographs of Australian families and genera have included descriptions of many new taxa and the reduction of an even larger number of names to synonymy. Moreover, many taxa have been newly reported from Australia, while other Australian records have proved to be based on misidentifications or could not otherwise be confirmed. Taxonomic revisions from other regions have also resulted in many name changes among Australian taxa, and floristic research has provided numerous new State and Territory records.

This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In arid lands, where vegetation is sparse or absent, the open ground is not bare but generally covered by a community of small, highly specialized organisms. Cyanobacteria, algae, microfungi, lichens, and bryophytes aggregate soil particles to form a coherent skin - the biological soil crust. It stabilizes and protects the soil surface from erosion by wind and water, influences water runoff and infiltration, and contributes nitrogen and carbon to desert soils. Soil surface disturbance, such as heavy livestock grazing, human trampling or off-road vehicles, breaks up the fragile soil crust, thus compromising its stability, structure, and productivity. This book is the first synthesis of the biology of soil crusts and their importance as an ecosystem component. Composition and functioning of different soil-crust types are discussed, and case studies are used to show the impact of crusts on landscape hydrology, soil stability, nutrient cycles, and land management.
