One truth fully said Though at times popularity may follow in the wake of a reformer, yet the reformer knows popularity is not love. The title of this little book is significant; suggested by one who heard the lectures and whose judgment is worthy of respect. This book was released on 2018-12-31 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Gatling Gun Detachment, Fifth Army Corps: At Santiago, a Few Unvarnished Truths Concerning That Expedition From thence on, Parker's Gatlings were our inseparable companions throughout the siege. They were right up at the front. When we dug our trenches, he took off the wheels of his guns and put them in the trenches. His men and ours slept in the same bomb-proofs and shared with one an other whenever either side got a supply of beans or coffee and sugar. At no hour of the day or night was Parker anywhere but where we wished him to be, in the event of an attack. If a troop of my regiment was sent off to guard some road or some break in the lines, we were almost certain to get Parker to send a Gatling along, and, whether the change was made by day or by night, the Gat ling went. Sometimes we took the initiative and started to quell the fire of the Spanish trenches; sometimes they opened upon us; but, at whatever hour of the twenty-four the fighting began, the drumming of the Gatlings was soon heard through the cracking of our own carbines. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Machine-Gun Tactics This book, which was begun five years ago, is now published because I feel that, with all its faults, it may bring into greater prominence the latent possibilities of the machine gun, and the Vital necessity for the most complete organisa tion and tactical training of the detachments. I desire to express my great indebtedness to Captain C. O. Place, Royal Engineers, who undertook the work of editing and pre paring the book for the press at a moment's notice on my sailing for India. Book Synopsis The Gun Book by : Thomas Heron McKee
Download or read book The Gun Book written by Thomas Heron McKee and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gun Book: For Boys and Men When man or boy becomes interested enough in firearms to want to know what sort of an instrument the gun really is, and how it performs its work, he is not made much the wiser by reading that: "A gun is a thermodynamic machine by which the potential energy of the explosive is converted into the kinetic energy of the projectile." Nor will the curious-minded beginner get much useful information on the subject by questioning poorly informed adults who may tell him, as they did the author in his youth, that the bullet does not "get up speed" until it is some distance from the muzzle; or that the missile does not begin to drop in obedience to gravity until late in its flight. Such misinformation takes on so many forms that the more of it the inquirer listens to the greater grows his bewilderment. Between these two extremes of overexactness buried in mysterious scientific terms, and of false theories carelessly uttered, the seeker for light on the elementary problems of gunnery suffers almost as much today as he ever did. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Methods of Machine-Gun Fire A study of this character will not bear casual reading, but must be made the object of thorough consideration and if possible an application of the principles discussed if the full benefit is to be derived from it. One of the most interesting features of this translation is the' method of regulating the extent of zone (or deep) fire by the use of a graduated scale on the hand wheel. 'so far as we are aware, no consideration has ever been given to this question in this country. While zone fire finds little application at the shorter ranges which are the rule in the use of machine guns in trench warfare, the longer ranges at which they will often be used in the war of movements will make necessary some method of compensating for errors in range, deficient observation, varia tions due to setting up of mount, etc. By the method described, a zone of the depth required in any given case to compensate for these factors can be covered with almost absolute uniformity. A valuable hint as to the method of training gun pointers is contained on pages 20 and 21 of the text. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Obviously the taxpayer is not entitled to recover or extinguish through amortization more than the difference between the war cost of such property and what he can sell the property for after the war, or if he continues to need and use it in his business, what it would have cost him after the war. As the rule is expressed in Article 183 of the Regulations: The total amount to be extinguished by amortization, in general, is the excess of the unextinguished or unrecovered cost of the property over its maximum value (either for sale or for use as part of the plant or equipment of a going business) under stable post war.
