Book excerpt: The book is about Americans in love in Peru in 1973-74, when Watergate preoccupied everybody back home, when Allende had just been overthrown in Chile, and things weren't very stable around or between the characters. The title refers to their garden gate in Cuzco, which had a stone lintel with twin serpents. He took it as a propitious sign for renewal of their love, since the snake meant good luck and prosperity for the Incas. Of course in Eden it meant the opposite, an ambiguity he appreciated as he reported on the aftermath of the Allende coup and the return of Peron, whiile trying to make it as a foreign correpondent so he could be with Liz, a photographer based in Cuzco. Peru seemed stable by comparison to DC, an inversion of the usual political stability of North versus South America, but in impoverished Ayacucho Province a Maoist rebel group, Sendero Luminoso, had arisen and Liz had been taking photos there the summer before, creating problems with the government they didn't need in addition to personal concerns with free love and open marriage, black market and stolen art, so chaos inside their gate as well as outside.

Book excerpt: In The Twelve Gates, clinical anthropologist John Rush embarks on a spellbinding journey through death rituals in various cultures, centering on the ancient Egyptian philosophy of death and resurrection. The first part of the book provides an overview of different rituals, encouraging readers to confront their feelings about death and to reevaluate their lives. The author details his own experiences preparing for death, including a painful tattooing process inspired by the ancient Egyptian Books of the Netherworld. He then guides readers through the Twelve Gates of the Underworld, symbolic ritual stages during which they can figuratively experience death and rebirth. A set of full-color tarot cards, designed by the author, is included as an aid in passing through each of the Gates. These ancient rituals, performed by pharaohs and priests for thousands of years, help ease the way toward a peaceful, conscious death.

Book Synopsis Philanthropy in Toni Morrison’s Oeuvre by : Rico Hollmach
Download or read book Philanthropy in Toni Morrison’s Oeuvre written by Rico Hollmach and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-07 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Toni Morrison’s highly influential works through the lens of philanthropy. The point of departure of this endeavor is the keen observation that philanthropy has always played a leading role in US discourses about the nation itself. While doing so, time and again philanthropy has also been used as a means of social stratification – especially for so-called social minorities such as the African American community, whose historical experience within the United States is at the very heart of Morrison’s novels. This book pursues the goal of a twofold understanding – on the one hand, through offering a rather innovative access to Morrison’s works, the project allows for new insights into one of today’s most influential authors. On the other hand, this book explores the productivity of the concept of philanthropy for literary and cultural studies – a concept hitherto largely neglected by scholars in both academic fields.
Book Synopsis Traditional Japanese Literature by : Haruo Shirane
Download or read book Traditional Japanese Literature written by Haruo Shirane and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-25 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Haruo Shirane's critically acclaimed Traditional Japanese Literature: An Anthology, Beginnings to 1600, contains key examples of both high and low styles of poetry, drama, prose fiction, and essays. For this abridged edition, Shirane retains substantial excerpts from such masterworks as The Tale of Genji, The Tales of the Heike, The Pillow Book, the Man'yoshu, and the Kokinshu. He preserves his comprehensive survey of secular and religious anecdotes (setsuwa) as well as classical poems with extensive commentary. He features no drama; selections from influential war epics; and notable essays on poetry, fiction, history, and religion. Texts are interwoven to bring into focus common themes, styles, and allusions while inviting comparison and debate. The result is a rich encounter with ancient and medieval Japanese culture and history. Each text and genre is enhanced by extensive introductions that provide sociopolitical and cultural context. The anthology is organized by period, genre, and topic—an instructor-friendly structure—and a comprehensive bibliography guides readers toward further study. Praise for Traditional Japanese Literature: An Anthology, Beginnings to 1600 "Haruo Shirane has done a splendid job at this herculean task."—Joshua Mostow, University of British Columbia "A comprehensive and innovative anthology.... All of the introductions are excellent."—Journal of Asian Studies "One of those impressive, erudite, must-have titles for anyone interested in Asian literature."—Bloomsbury Review "An anthology that comprises superb translations of an exceptionally wide range of texts.... Highly recommended."—Choice "A wealth of material."—Monumenta Nipponica

Book excerpt: A. K. Larkwood's The Unspoken Name is a stunning debut fantasy about a young priestess sentenced to die, who at the last minute escapes her fate; only to become an assassin for the wizard who saved her. What if you knew how and when you will die? Csorwe does—she will climb the mountain, enter the Shrine of the Unspoken, and gain the most honored title: sacrifice. But on the day of her foretold death, a powerful mage offers her a new fate. Leave with him, and live. Turn away from her destiny and her god to become a thief, a spy, an assassin—the wizard's loyal sword. Topple an empire, and help him reclaim his seat of power. But Csorwe will soon learn—gods remember, and if you live long enough, all debts come due. “In the vein of Le Guin's magnificent Tombs of Atuan—if Arha the Eaten One got to grow up to be a swordswoman mercenary in thrall to her dubious wizard mentor. I love this book so much."—Arkady Martine, author of A Memory Called Empire "I cannot recommend it enough." -- Tamsyn Muir, author of Gideon the Ninth At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Book excerpt: Head of the Snake is the sequel to Death Is Not the Final Chapter. It is book 2 in the Jason Orr saga. When Orr travels to Questa, New Mexico, to visit an old Army buddy’s ranch, what awaits him there shakes him to his core. In his passion to seek justice and answers for his friend, Orr sets out on a quest that will entangle him with some of the most ruthless cartels in the United States. Their illicit world of fentanyl trafficking and Orr’s drive to avenge a death puts them on a collision course. It ends in an isolated body strewn canyon in Taos County. When the bullets stop flying, Orr and his two new companions find themselves with a strange dilemma. The decision they make will either help them accomplish a dream of establishing a veteran’s horse ranch or land them in jail. But Jason Orr can’t leave it there. He makes a risky call from a dead vatos cell phone to the head of the CJNG cartel. The call starts a conflict that his antagonist Joseph Lehan, the CEO of Sarnev International, would never see coming. Thousands of miles away, during Orr’s time in Questa, Joseph Lehan gives a command to the head of his Moscow division while he is attending a meeting at Lehan’s Bermuda Estate. There are three men who escaped back to Moscow Lehan wants eliminated. Lehan’s division head is ordered to avenge the death of Lehan’s best friend and benefactor, Andre Sarnev. Unfortunately for Lehan, this order pushes him over a line that no one should ever cross. In that region of the world, you don’t disrespect the Solntsevskaya Brotherhood. A mistake that would cost him dearly. Between what Orr has set in motion and Lehan’s own vendetta, one of the world’s richest companies, Sarnev International, could soon be no more, but that is another story.
