Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Home Garden Is there no beauty in Pomona that we can call to our aid? For why should we everlastingly apply to Flora for everything that is beautiful in the embellishment of our gardens Fruit-trees have flowers as well, and thus they Offer us a double supply of beauty; being beautiful when in flower and beautiful when in fruit - pleasing to the eye and to the taste, and ornamental as well as useful - doubly gratifying and doubly enjoyable. Plants with bright seed-vessels are always in demand for their ornamental qualities; but, after all, these only please the eye, instead of furnishing, like the fruit-trees, entertainment for man and beast. Red-cheeked apples, it is argued, are quite as decorative as red-berried shrubs; and the bird's-eye cherry is scarcely more desirable when in flower than any other cherry, while the ripe fruit, preserves, etc., of the ordinary kind will cause the empty blossoms to go up at full sail. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Come Into the Garden IT is appropriate to explain that in a book of this character there may be an appearance of inconsistency to the layman in the spelling of plant names. The nomenclature of Bailey's Encyclopcedia of Horticulture has been followed, however, with the exception of the capitaliza tion of the names when they appear apart from their botanical components. Personally, the author believes a page presents a more agree able appearance to the eye when the names of such plants as may be referred to thereon are not treated as proper names; and that it may be read with greater facility and a less disturbed sense of values as a consequence. For those desiring to pursue further reading or study along the lines of any particular chapter, a bibliog raphy of standard works dealing with each chap ter subject will be found at the back of the book, just before the Index. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Garden That I Love Second Series The Longest day.-some too partial persons have been pleased to say that not only the writing of books concerning gardens, but the growing atfec tion for them, owes something to The Garden that I Love. I am so little of an author, though so much of a gardener in a small way, that I fear the expression of this belief gives one a certain amount of pleasure, since even the most unambitious persons have, in their hearts, the foible of self complacency as much as the most soaring. But this weakness receives its corrective from Lamia's irony and the Poet's chastening sense. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I suppose I smiled; for a Whole life passed on a piece of earth fifteen feet square, part of which is dedicated to a gravel path, seems a somewhat narrow existence. But, after all, what is narrow? The Garden that I Love is, I allow, a trifle larger than that but to the owner of Wilton or Albury I imagine it would appear pitiably small. Withal, not only could I spend'all my days in it, but, as a fact, I do so and the only complaint I ever have to make concerning it is when weeds grow apace or shrubberies become unconscionably untidy and then I blame myself, and say to Veronica, who has often warned me against what she calls my mania for expansion, that I fear it is too large. Gentle as she always is with me, she cannot resist quoting my tardy testimony to the fulfilment of her own predictions. A wise man never says Med culpd to a woman. But then I have no pretensions to be wise, save in love for my garden and for Veronica. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Garden Decorative Everyone will allow that the beauty of the garden is not dependent wholly on the flowers that happen to be blooming within it. Over and above these there must be that fine sense of repose, and of harmony, without which no garden, strictly speaking, can be accounted really beautiful and satisfying. It is the lack of these qualities that makes a garden commonplace and uninteresting. Books have been written to teach us how to look at pictures, and how to listen to music. I wonder if the day will come that shall produce the volume which shall tell us hew to enjoy the beauties of gardens? Certain it is the majority of people do not recognise, and, therefore, do not enjoy, these beauties as they might. I have said that a garden to be really beautiful must impress us with a sense of repose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Home Garden The following pages were originally written for small children; as such they appeared in the Coun try Gentleman under the title The Child's Gar den. Gardening is such a big problem I was anxious to make it understandable to the begin ner's mind. Since our entrance into the World's War the knowledge of the Vital importance of food pro duction has led me to put these chapters into book form for children older grown. The fact that flowers occupy some of the space may help to cheer us as we work at the big task of increasing the world's food supply. The wonderful work the Boy Scouts of America are doing to help increase this supply, has, more than any other cause, led me to rewrite these chap ters. Under the' wonderful leadership of my life partner, the Chief Grub Scout, I am sure they will achieve yet greater results. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Garden, Vol. 2 of 2: Cultural Works on Practical Gardening have, for the most part, been arranged in the calender form, no doubt with a View to render them, in the estimation of their authors, more convenient for reference. There are, however, objections to this mode of arrangement, which we think may be avoided by adopting the sectional or separate garden division, as the operations in any of these departments may be carried on irrespective of the others - a mode of culture which is, in fact, practised in our largest and best-managed establishments, in all of which the subdivision of labour is found to be admirably adapted for facilitating the multifarious operations of the whole. Besides, some people have a predilection for one of these departments more than for another, and many are content with one of them only. We had hoped that a seasonal arrangement might have been adopted, and that it would have combined all the advantages of the calender form, and have avoided its principal defects. The attempt to carry out this scheme has, however, shown us that it inevitably involved a want of connection and a degree of confusion, which could not be otherwise than most embarrassing to the reader, While it necessitated an amount of repetition which would have made it impossible to comprise the cultural department of the garden in a single volume, Without sacrificing that minuteness of detail which is essential to the highest value of such a work.
