Book excerpt: This book is a vivid reminder of the early days of library development in Ontario. The beautiful buildings which still grace Ontario towns and villages, as illustrated, are a part of our provincial heritage. By the turn of the century, a public library was perceived as an important element in the civic fabric of almost every Ontario community. However, the introduction of the Carnegie grants for library buildings gave impetus to the Ontario government programme for library development, and provided a focus for increased support of library services. Rivalry among neighbouring communities to secure a Carngie library heightened this awareness, as did the publicity – in some instances even controversy – which surrounded each step of the grant seeking, site selection and plan approval process. As well, the hitherto unexplored story of Carnegie grant process in each community has been examined, and the role of one man, James Bertram, secretary to Andrew Carnegie, is revealed in absorbing detail. Library plans and design elements are also discussed, and the influence of a few architects on the building designs is revealed; the fascinating involvement of Frank Lloyd Wright in the Pembroke Carnegie library building is one such example.

Book excerpt: For more than a millennium ago, a group of Crusading knights, known as the Knights Templars, discovered a treasure so vast, they considered it too great for one king or Pope to possess. This sacred treasure would become known as the Holy Grail. For hundreds of years, this sacred treasure would be sought after and fought over for many centuries, before it was lost to history. Years before the dissolving of the Templar Order in 1307 A.D., the Knights Templars, led by the renowned grandmaster Hugues de Payens, in an effort to protect the location of the Grail, buried a sacred map within a well-crafted book of parables. A book we know today as The Holy Bible! Welcome to the Elijah Doctrine, the 2nd Chronicle, where the Vail of the holy scriptures will finally be removed! What if everything we've been taught to believe is the greatest deception of the Ages? What if the Holy Bible was designed for the sole purpose of concealing the greatest secret on earth?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boredom is a prevalent theme in Herman Melville's works. Rather than a passing fancy or a device for drawing attention to the action that also permeates his work, boredom is central to the writings, the author argues. He contends that in Melville's mature work, especially Moby Dick, boredom presents itself as an insidious presence in the lives of Melville's characters, until it matures from being a mere killer of time into a killer of souls.

Each of these questions challenge us to struggle with some nagging issue or problem inside us that simply refuses to go away. God’s great questions probe the deepest issues of our lives—questions of identity, of adequacy, of balance, of assurance, of mercy, of renewal, of perspective, of ultimate hope, of perception. As the characters in the Bible of whom these questions were first asked wrestle with their answers, we as readers of this book find ourselves wrestling with the same questions in our lives—bringing us face-to-face with ourselves and with God himself.
