Book excerpt: From humble folk instrument to American icon, the story of the guitar is told in this “exceptionally well-written” memoir by the NPR commentator (Guitar Player). In this blend of personal memoir and cultural history, National Public Radio commentator Tim Brookes narrates the long and winding history of the guitar in the United States as he recounts his own quest to build the perfect instrument. Pairing up with a master artisan from the Green Mountains of Vermont, Brookes learns how a perfect piece of cherry wood is hued, dovetailed, and worked on with saws, rasps, and files. He also discovers how the guitar first arrived in America with the conquistadors before being taken up by an extraordinary variety of hands: miners and society ladies, lumberjacks and presidents’ wives. In time, the guitar became America’s vehicle of self-expression. Nearly every immigrant group has appropriated it to tell their story. “Part history, part love song, Guitar strikes just the right chords.” —Andrew Abrahams, People

Download or read book Fracking The Fylde written by Alan Tootill and published by Alan Tootill. This book was released on 2016-12-17 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The frackers promised jobs. Promised to turn Blackpool into a new super-rich gold rush town. They brought jobs all right. They brought in foreign workers who sent their money back to their loving wives and families in France and Eastern Europe while they shot up heroin and snorted cocaine at the end of the day’s work. For the rest of Blackpool, before the problems started, it was business as usual. But then people started getting wise. The stories started emerging how the fracking companies, purpose-built venture frackploitation capital firms, were wrecking the land and air. The profit from raping the countryside was going abroad to their US, Australian and Cayman Island and other offshore backers. The only money that stayed in the country went into corrupt politicians’ pockets. Of course back in the early 2010s no-one knew this was coming. But the signs were there. The environmentalists raged on about earthquakes, water pollution and health problems. Most folk didn’t listen. The antis were a ragbag lot, and as often as not were squabbling between themselves. When one of them died in front of a fracking fluid lorry she was blamed for her own stupidity. Now the Fylde is ruined forever, and everyone’s wise after the event.

Book Synopsis The Lost Villages by : Henry Buckton
Download or read book The Lost Villages written by Henry Buckton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2008-04-30 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across Britain there are more than 3,000 lost villages once-thriving communities that time and fortune have reduced to ivy-clad remnants and weather-worn ruins. Echoes of a former age, they evoke a natural curiosity as to who lived in them, what caused their decline. Bestselling author Henry Buckton goes in search of some of the Britain's more recent lost villages: Hallsands in Devon, swept away in a violent storm; the communities of Vatersay and Mingulay, in Scotland, victims to the changing fortunes of the local laird; and the picture-perfect village of Imber in Wiltshire, requisitioned for the nation in time of war but never given back. Combining rare photographs and the memories of those who knew the villages, the author provides a timely account of communities whose stories would otherwise soon be lost for ever.
