Book excerpt: At the end of Caveat Fuzzy, it appeared that things had settled down on Zarathustra since the slavers' reign of terror at the Fuzzy Reservation was brought to a halt. But it is only the calm before the storm. Suddenly, Fuzzies are disappearing from the Reservation, while people are spacing in from all over the Terran Federation to the colony planet of Zarathustra. The question is why? Hundreds of spaceships, from luxurious yachts to rusty freighters, are orbiting Mallorysport and flooding the spaceport with visitors. And they only want one thing: their very own Fuzzy! Fuzzies are the cutest, cuddliest and most intelligent pet in all of known space. Now, on top of that, owning one has become the ultimate status symbol. Jack Holloway is at his wits' end. Even if he wanted to, there's no way he, or anyone else, could allow this swarm of tourists to each have their very own Fuzzy. There just aren't enough of the little critters to go around; plus, the free Fuzzies living on north Beta continent don't want a thing to do with the Big Bad Ones. However, there are a number of low-life characters who are attempting to abduct as many Fuzzies as they can for transport to Terra. Moreover, there is a new danger to Fuzzies that travel off-world: Jack and company had better figure it out before they unwittingly drive the Fuzzies to extinction!

Book excerpt: On the pleasant backwater planet of Zarathustra things had been relatively quiet since the famous duel between Jack Holloway and his recently discovered son, Morgan. Unless one considers the potential ramifications of the alien rocket ship discovered on the secondary landmass of Beta Continent. The new owners of Bowlby Inter-planetary Network (BIN) attack Ben Rainsford's governorship and the Yellowsand mining treaty with the Charterless Zarathustra Company using the recently discovered rocket and what appear to be the fossils of giant Fuzzies. If Rainsford's government is legally challenged, what will happen to the Fuzzies? Equally disturbing is the unrest evident among the Northern Beta Fuzzies. Things are brought to a head when a member of the colonial government is taken hostage by Fuzzie-tempers flare and only Jack Holloway may be able to stop hostilities before they grow into a full-out war. The government, the CZC, and the Fuzzies are all in danger as events overtake them, as Caveat Fuzzy brings to a conclusion the events related in Fuzzy Ergo Sum.

Book excerpt: Little Fuzzy is a 1962 science fiction novel by H. Beam Piper, now in public domain. It was nominated for the 1963 Hugo Award for Best Novel. The story revolves around determining whether a small furry species discovered on the planet Zarathustra is sapient, and features a mild libertarianism that emphasizes sincerity and honesty. The book was followed by a sequel, Fuzzy Sapiens (original title The Other Human Race) published in 1964, the same year that Piper committed suicide. In the wake of Piper's suicide, rumor spread of a lost "second sequel"; in 1981, at the behest of Ace Books, William Tuning produced the critically acclaimed Fuzzy Bones. Ace also hired Ardath Mayhar in 1982 to write Golden Dreams: A Fuzzy Odyssey, which tells the events of Little Fuzzy from the viewpoint of the Fuzzies (or Gashta, as they call themselves). Later, Piper's lost manuscript was discovered, and published in 1984 as Fuzzies and Other People. A new volume in the series, Fuzzy Ergo Sum by Wolfgang Diehr, was published by Pequod Press in April 2011. A second book, Caveat Fuzzy was released in August 2012. A third installment, this time by Wolfgang Diehr & well known Piper historian John F. Carr, titled Fuzzy Conundrum, published in 2016. In 2011, John Scalzi published Fuzzy Nation, which he described as a "reboot" of Piper's original. (wikipedia.org)

A celebrated anthropologist unearths the mysterious origins of the unique partnership that rewrote the history of both species. Dogs and humans have been inseparable for more than 40,000 years. The relationship has proved to be a pivotal development in our evolutionary history. The same is also true for our canine friends; our connection with them has had much to do with their essential nature and survival. How and why did humans and dogs find their futures together, and how have these close companions (literally) shaped each other? Award-winning anthropologist Pat Shipman finds answers in prehistory and the present day. In Our Oldest Companions, Shipman untangles the genetic and archaeological evidence of the first dogs. She follows the trail of the wolf-dog, neither prehistoric wolf nor modern dog, whose bones offer tantalizing clues about the earliest stages of domestication. She considers the enigma of the dingo, not quite domesticated yet not entirely wild, who has lived intimately with humans for thousands of years while actively resisting control or training. Shipman tells how scientists are shedding new light on the origins of the unique relationship between our two species, revealing how deep bonds formed between humans and canines as our guardians, playmates, shepherds, and hunters. Along the journey together, dogs have changed physically, behaviorally, and emotionally, as humans too have been transformed. DogsÕ labor dramatically expanded the range of human capability, altering our diets and habitats and contributing to our very survival. Shipman proves that we cannot understand our own history as a species without recognizing the central role that dogs have played in it.

Book excerpt: The human love of novelty and desire to make one place look like another, coupled with massive increases in global trade and transport, are creating a growing economic and ecological threat. The same forces that are rapidly "McDonaldizing" the world's diverse cultures are also driving us toward an era of monotonous, weedy, and uniformly impoverished landscapes. Unique plant and animal communities are slowly succumbing to the world's "rats and rubbervines" -- animals like zebra mussels and feral pigs, and plants like kudzu and water hyacinth -- that, once moved into new territory, can disrupt human enterprise and well-being as well as native habitats and biodiversity. From songbird-eating snakes in Guam to cheatgrass in the Great Plains, "invasives" are wreaking havoc around the world. In A Plague of Rats and Rubbervines, widely published science writer Yvonne Baskin draws on extensive research to provide an engaging and authoritative overview of the problem of harmful invasive alien species. She takes the reader on a worldwide tour of grasslands, gardens, waterways, and forests, describing the troubles caused by exotic organisms that run amok in new settings and examining how commerce and travel on an increasingly connected planet are exacerbating this oldest of human-created problems. She offers examples of potential solutions and profiles dedicated individuals worldwide who are working tirelessly to protect the places and creatures they love. While our attention is quick to focus on purposeful attempts to disrupt our lives and economies by releasing harmful biological agents, we often ignore equally serious but much more insidious threats, those that we inadvertently cause by our own seemingly harmless actions. A Plague of Rats and Rubbervines takes a compelling look at this underappreciated problem and sets forth positive suggestions for what we as consumers, gardeners, travelers, nurserymen, fishermen, pet owners, business people -- indeed all of us who by our very local choices drive global commerce -- can do to help. Book excerpt: Fuzzy Logic, is a new book in H. Beam Piper's Fuzzy series. It is Wolfgang's fourth and biggest Fuzzy novel, following The Fuzzy Conundrum, Caveat Fuzzy and Fuzzy Ego Sum. It is March 15th, 658 Atomic Era on the planet Zarathustra and things have quieted down a bit since the destruction of the Fuzzy slaver ring. Or have they? A group of people on Beta continent have been in hiding for several months with a very nasty secret. From off-world, two groups of people have arrived to vex the local government and Fuzzy Commissioner of Native Affairs, Jack Holloway. Supervisor Kim Trahn Sylvinski and his crew from Terra have come to audit Zarathustra's shiny new government. Supervisor Sylvinski is eager to take someone's head on a platter back to Terra, and Ben Rainsford, the Colonial Governor, appears to be the main focus of this unwanted attention. Even worse, an interested third party, a Hugh Lennon from Magni Colony, comes up with information that could cause more trouble for the beleaguered Colonial Government. The second group could be even more sinister with motives and means well outside of the norm. What they are after is a mystery that could threaten the stability of the entire Federation. Things start getting hairy when suicide bombers make the scene with a strange message before blowing themselves up. A young Magni-Freyan woman finds herself first lost in the wilds of eastern Beta Continent, and then finds herself in even deeper trouble than just dealing with a charging damnthing or attacking harpies. In the company of people with questionable motives, she plays a waiting game until she can escape to safety. Meanwhile, Morgan Holloway returns from Terra with a sealed chest containing something that could bring down the Charterless Zarathustra Company and, by extension, the Colonial Government as well. To assist him he hires, Jason Roberts, private investigator and his assistant, Fuzzy Mike Hammer. They compare notes only to find themselves in potentially mortal danger.

While desperately in love with her new baby, the world she'd known had disappeared overnight and so had her sense of self. Jamila's salvation came in the form of a letter. A dear friend, Clare Bowditch – who had been there herself – wrote to tell Jamila she would get through this. Her comforting words reassured Jamila that she was seen, that she was supported and that she was not alone. Now Jamila wants to pay it forward to the next generation of new mothers. The Motherhood is a collection of letters from some of Australia’s favourite women, sharing what they wish they’d known about life with a newborn. Coming from writers with a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences, no two stories are alike – but all are generous, compassionate and deeply honest. As the old adage goes, ‘It takes a village to raise a child’ – and it also takes a village to properly support a new mother. Here is your village. These sisters (with babes) in arms are here to share the joy, the fear, the love, the laughter, the tears and the frustration, and to hold your hand in the dark. Contributors include Zoë Foster Blake, Clementine Ford, Holly Wainwright, Clare Bowditch, Em Rusciano, and more. Together, they will give you the strength and courage to find your feet as a new mum. ______________________________________ 'All new mothers need to read this book . . . Bravo to these women who have bravely put themselves out there in the hope that their stories will help new mothers find the strength to push on through.' Books+Publishing

Book excerpt: NAMED A BEST BOOK OF 2020 BY THE NEW YORK TIMES, THE GUARDIAN, THE BROOKLYN RAIL, THE GLOBE AND MAIL, POP MATTERS, COMICS BEAT, AND PUBLISHERS WEEKLY From the “heir to R. Crumb and Art Spiegelman” (Economist), a masterful work of comics journalism about indigenous North America, resource extraction, and our debt to the natural world The Dene have lived in the vast Mackenzie River Valley since time immemorial, by their account. To the Dene, the land owns them, not the other way around, and it is central to their livelihood and very way of being. But the subarctic Canadian Northwest Territories are home to valuable resources, including oil, gas, and diamonds. With mining came jobs and investment, but also road-building, pipelines, and toxic waste, which scarred the landscape, and alcohol, drugs, and debt, which deformed a way of life. In Paying the Land, Joe Sacco travels the frozen North to reveal a people in conflict over the costs and benefits of development. The mining boom is only the latest assault on indigenous culture: Sacco recounts the shattering impact of a residential school system that aimed to “remove the Indian from the child”; the destructive process that drove the Dene from the bush into settlements and turned them into wage laborers; the government land claims stacked against the Dene Nation; and their uphill efforts to revive a wounded culture. Against a vast and gorgeous landscape that dwarfs all human scale, Paying the Land lends an ear to trappers and chiefs, activists and priests, to tell a sweeping story about money, dependency, loss, and culture—recounted in stunning visual detail by one of the greatest cartoonists alive.
