Book excerpt: This is the most ambitious effort so far to communicate the depth and power of the Christian sapiential tradition, or "wisdom Christianity," and the promise of its dramatic rebirth in our time. While much of the writing of Rahner, von Balthasar, Merton, Bede Griffiths, Abhishiktananda, Leclercq, De Lubac, and Odo Cassel is of this kind, theologians have been slow to connect the dots and to awaken to the organic gestalt of sapiential theology in its unity and vitality. The book shows how the sapiential consciousness and its theological expression develop both the unitive depth (or "East") and the historical dynamism (or "West") of the mystery of Christ. The work unfolds in 4 stages: (1) the awakening of sapiential consciousness, (2) the Eastern turn, which opens Christianity to its own unitive (or nondual) core, (3) the Western turn, in which Christian wisdom is first challenged and then regenerated by its encounter with the personal and historical dynamism of the West (expressed in freedom, creativity, critical thinking, and historical progress), and (4) the global turn of postmodernity, global consciousness, and the world church of Vatican II, in which the unity and intentionality of history become visible and understandable in a Christocentric perspective.

Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling finale to the Age of Madness trilogyfinds the world in an unstoppable revolution where heroes have nothing left to lose as darkness and destruction overtake everything. Chaos. Fury. Destruction. The Great Change is upon us . . . Some say that to change the world you must first burn it down. Now that belief will be tested in the crucible of revolution: the Breakers and Burners have seized the levers of power, the smoke of riots has replaced the smog of industry, and all must submit to the wisdom of crowds. With nothing left to lose, Citizen Brock is determined to become a new hero for the new age, while Citizeness Savine must turn her talents from profit to survival before she can claw her way to redemption. Orso will find that when the world is turned upside down, no one is lower than a monarch. And in the bloody North, Rikke and her fragile Protectorate are running out of allies . . . while Black Calder gathers his forces and plots his vengeance. The banks have fallen, the sun of the Union has been torn down, and in the darkness behind the scenes, the threads of the Weaver's ruthless plan are slowly being drawn together . . . Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A powerful exploration of diverse world views long ignored by the Western world that suggests possible solutions to the environmental and social problems that face us in the next millennium. Our civilization is in crisis. Overpopulation and overconsumption have jeopardized our survival and the great promises of technology have resulted in environmental disaster. This situation, says author John Broomfield, results from the serious error the Western world makes in equating one way of knowing with all ways of knowing--mistaking a thin slice of reality for the whole. Broomfield argues that the necessary wisdom to chart a new course is available to us from many sources: the sacred traditions of our ancestors; the spiritual traditions of other cultures; spirit in nature; feminine ways of being; contemporary movements for personal, social, and ecological transformation; and the very source of our current crisis, science itself. Other Ways of Knowing shows us the wisdom of other cultures who may hold the knowledge necessary to arrest our headlong race toward destruction. From the ancient Polynesian navigational technique of remote viewing to the formative causation theory of Rupert Sheldrake, Other Ways of Knowing examines perceptions and practices that challenge the narrow perspective of the Western world and provide answers to the complex questions that face us as we move into the next millennium.

Book excerpt: The author of this unusual book-and-card set shows readers how to combine a simplified method based on tarot reading with general principles of Jungian psychology. The resulting benefits include understanding oneself and gaining insights to the future. Thirty-six specially designed cardsï¿1/2half the number of a standard tarot deckï¿1/2allow users to conduct simplified readings. Thus they avoid the complexities and confusion they might encounter with a full tarot deck. Each of the 36 cards specifies a personality designation according to Jungian psychology. Among them are: Psyche, or our true selves . . . The Persona, or the masks we adopt in life . . . The Wise Old Man, or the well of ancestral knowledge and good counseling . . . The Child Within, signifying innocence, naivety, and immature aspects of self . . . Mother Moon Goddess, or the mother archetype . . . The Beggar, signifying psychological denial of unwelcome character traits. These are just a few of the 36 personality types reflected in the cards. The author instructs on correct methods of card reading for greater self awareness. She advises her readers to dip into the Wisdom Well and learn what the present means and what the future can bring. Book excerpt: The world spins in economic turmoil, and who can tell what will happen next? Cold numbers and simple statistical projections don't take into account social, financial, or political factors that can dramatically alter the economic course of a nation or a region. In this unique book, more than twenty leading economists and experts render thorough, rigorously researched prognoses for the world's major economies over the next five years. Factoring in such varied issues as the price of oil, the strength of the U.S. dollar, geopolitics, tax policies, and new developments in investment decision making, the contributors ground their predictions in the realities of current events, political conditions, and the health of financial institutions in each national economy. The most comprehensive volume on the global economy available today, this book presents up-to-date research on Russia, Australia, Europe, sub-Saharan and South Africa, the major Asian economies, North America, and the largest economies of Latin America. With unsurpassed expertise, the authors explain what's going on in individual countries, how important current global issues will impact them, and what economic scenarios they most likely will face in upcoming years.

Book excerpt: Experience is making a comeback. Learn how to repurpose your wisdom. At age 52, after selling the company he founded and ran as CEO for 24 years, rebel boutique hotelier Chip Conley was looking at an open horizon in midlife. Then he received a call from the young founders of Airbnb, asking him to help grow their disruptive start-up into a global hospitality giant. He had the industry experience, but Conley was lacking in the digital fluency of his 20-something colleagues. He didn't write code, or have an Uber or Lyft app on his phone, was twice the age of the average Airbnb employee, and would be reporting to a CEO young enough to be his son. Conley quickly discovered that while he'd been hired as a teacher and mentor, he was also in many ways a student and intern. What emerged is the secret to thriving as a mid-life worker: learning to marry wisdom and experience with curiosity, a beginner's mind, and a willingness to evolve, all hallmarks of the "Modern Elder." In a world that venerates the new, bright, and shiny, many of us are left feeling invisible, undervalued, and threatened by the "digital natives" nipping at our heels. But Conley argues that experience is on the brink of a comeback. Because at a time when power is shifting younger, companies are finally waking up to the value of the humility, emotional intelligence, and wisdom that come with age. And while digital skills might have only the shelf life of the latest fad or gadget, the human skills that mid-career workers possess--like good judgment, specialized knowledge, and the ability to collaborate and coach - never expire. Part manifesto and part playbook, Wisdom@Work ignites an urgent conversation about ageism in the workplace, calling on us to treat age as we would other type of diversity. In the process, Conley liberates the term "elder" from the stigma of "elderly," and inspires us to embrace wisdom as a path to growing whole, not old. Whether you've been forced to make a mid-career change, are choosing to work past retirement age, or are struggling to keep up with the millennials rising up the ranks, Wisdom@Work will help you write your next chapter.
