The Committee argues that sustaining that contribution requires the UK to have the heritage science capacity to maintain the UK's movable and immovable heritage such as museum, library, archive and gallery collections and historic buildings. The recommendations made in the Committee's first report on heritage science (HLP 256, session 2005-06 (ISBN 9780104009550)) received a positive response: the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) have developed a joint Science and Heritage Programme, and the heritage science community have published a National Heritage Science Strategy and appointed a National Heritage Science Forum which have done much to build capacity and develop networks within the heritage science community. The Committee, however, heard concerns that senior heritage scientist posts are being lost and that the sustainability of UK heritage science capacity is at risk.It believes that the AHRC and National Heritage Science Forum should together measure capacity and address any issues arising. Whilst acknowledging the role of the heritage science community and improvements in this area since 2006, the Committee remains concerned and calls on DCMS to take action to ensure that heritage science is given the priority it deserves. Recommendations include: that DCMS should appoint a Chief Scientific Adviser without further delay and set departmental objectives for heritage science with DCMS arm's length bodies also setting out how they will help achieve these objectives

The aim of this book is to discuss the development of digital libraries in the European context by presenting, primarily to non-European communities interested in digital libraries, the phenomena, initiatives, and developments that dominated in Europe. We describe the main projects and their outcomes, and shine a light on the number of challenges that have been inspiring new approaches, cooperative efforts, and the use of research methodology at different stages of the digital libraries development. Book excerpt: The idea of heritage as a “capital of irreplaceable cultural, social and economic value” was already present in the European Charter of the Architectural Heritage, adopted by the Council of Europe in 1975 (par.3). Today, this discourse is getting increasing attention on the research agenda. Some argue that, although heritage is always valued highly, the current interest in the impact of heritage is caused by the democratisation of heritage and the increased importance of heritage in today’s society. Others argue that a universal scarcity of funds for heritage management and conservation is the reason to give it its proper attention. Therefore, the Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation (University of Leuven) considered “Heritage Counts” a relevant and timely topic for its yearly international conference, the “thematic week”. This edition twins with the “Cultural Heritage Counts for Europe” project, funded by the EU Culture Programme. The opening day of the conference was co-organised by the lead partner of this project, EUROPA NOSTRA, and brought together European policymakers and international researchers involved in cultural heritage. This volume specifically reports on the lectures and fruitful debates on heritage impact during the 2015 thematic week. It was observed that evolutions in discourse and policy hold a significant prospect, which also entail an increasing demand for shared insights and formation. In response, this publication reflects on heritage impact by providing research, case studies and reflections that can serve as baseline records, guidance - and hopefully inspiration. The findings are subdivided in three main chapters: “Framing the paradigm”, “Impact assessments: research, methods and practice” and “Linking management, conservation and sustainable development”.
